Mount, Telegram Nov. 16, 1988 Area news in brief Nash board grants emergency funds The Nash County Emergency Food and Shelter Board has awarded funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for emergency food and shelter services to needy individuals in the area. The local board, with Dan Herring as chairman, awarded the $33,695 to the following agencies: Salvation Army, Community Ministries, $5,000, and My Sister's House, $1,000. The federal emergency funds were originally authorized in 1983 when President Reagan signed the "Jobs Stimulus Bill." The bill allocated funds to the National FEMA Board, which is made representatives of United Way of the Salvation Army, the National Council of Churches, Catholic Charities USA, the Council of Jewish Federations, Inc. and the American Red Cross.

Since 1983, Congress has awarded about $553 million to supplement and extend emergency food and shelter programs nationally. Locally, the Rocky Mount Area Untied Way has received $124,098 which has been administered through the local FEMA Board. Laughery to speak at school assembly Jack Laughery, chairman and chief executive officer of Imasco USA, Inc. will speak at an assembly Thursday at Rocky Mount Senior High School, as part of activities celebrating Free Enterprise Month. Laughery will speak about the concept of the free enterprise system.

The assembly will be for members of the school's chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America and other business students. Afterward, the FBLA members will tour the Hardee's world headquarters on Church Street. The FBLA is a national organization for high school students who are studying business.
