The local board, with Dan Herring as chairman, awarded the $33,695 to the following agencies: Salvation Army, Community Ministries, $5,000, and My Sister's House, $1,000. The federal emergency funds were originally authorized in 1983 when President Reagan signed the "Jobs Stimulus Bill." The bill allocated funds to the National FEMA Board, which is made up of representatives of United Way of America, the Salvation Army, the National Council of Churches, Catholic Charities USA, the Council of Jewish Federations, Inc. and the American Red Cross.

Escapee Found An escapee from a Duplin County jail turned himself in to police just after midnight this morning. Terence Lee Crapo, 19, told police at a North Church Street gas station that he had escaped from jail. The man was returned to Duplin County this morning. Police did not know how long the man had been missing or what he has been convicted of. Stereo Equipment Stolen Over $1,000 worth of stereo equipment and tires were stolen from a car on Dexter Street early Tuesday.

A 23-year-old man reported that two Second German leader has quit FRANKFURT, West Germany (AP) A West Germany Jewish leader who defended last week's controversial speech in parliament about Nazism has quit, Hesse State radio reported today. The man who gave the speech, Philipp Jenniger, resigned his post as parliament speaker over the uproar it created. He said, however, that he was misunderstood. The Associated Press called Michael Fuerst's home in Hanover for comment, but was told that Fuerst, the country's No. 2 Jewish leader, was not at home.

Hesse state radio said Fuerst had resigned after being harshly criticized by the country's Jewish community had for the comments he made following Jenninger's speech.
