a City Journal, Tuesday, April 10, 2007 www.siouxcityjournal.com Bad pet food sickened thousands WASHINGTON (AP) Pet food contaminated with an industrial chemical may have sickened or killed 39.000 cats and dogs nationwide, based on an extrapolation from data released Monday by one of the nation's largest chains of veterinary pitals. Banfield, The Pet Hospital, said an analysis of its database, compiled from records collected by its more than 615 veterinary hospitals, suggests that three out of every 10.000 cats and dogs that ate the pet food contaminated with melamine developed kidney failure. There are an estimated 60 million dogs and 70 million cats in the United States, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. The hospital chain saw 1 million dogs and cats during the three months when the more than 100 brands of now-recalled contaminated pet food were sold. It saw 284 extra cases of kidney failure among cats during that period, or a roughly 30 percent increase, when compared with background rates.

"It has meaning, when you see a peak like that. We see so many pets here, and it coincided with the recall period," said veterinarian Hugh Lewis, who oversees the mining of Banfield's database to do clinical studies. The chain continues to share its data with the Food and Drug Administration. FDA officials previously have said the database compiled by the huge veterinary practice would probably provide the most authoritative picture of the harm done by the tainted cat and dog food. From its findings, Banfield officials calculated an incidence rate of .03 percent for pets, although there was no discernible uptick among dogs.

That suggests the contamination was overwhelming toxic to cats, Lewis said. That is in line with what other experts have said previously. At least six pet food companies have recalled products made with imported Chinese wheat gluten tainted with the chemical. The recall involved about 1 percent of the overall U.S. pet food supply.

"On percentage basis it's not breathtaking, but unfortunately it's a number that, if it was your pet that was affected, it's too veterinarian Nancy Zimmerman, Banfield's senior medical adviser, said of the newly estimated incidence rate. In another estimate Monday, the founder of a veterinary group said 5,000 to 10,000 pets may have fallen ill from eating the contaminated food, and 1,000 to 2,000 may have died. Mick was born May 22, 1944, in Salem, the son of Alva and Pansey (Higgins) Little. He was raised in Indiana and attended Salem High School. He married Linda Morgan on Nov. 17, 1977. Together, they made their home in South Sioux City for the last 30 years.

He had managed the Morningside Cut Rate Gas Station and later worked as a cook at the county home. Survivors include his wife, Linda Little of South Sioux City; a son, Jody Little of Minnesota; a daughter and her husband, Melissa and Todd Baker of South Sioux City; a granddaughter, Jessica; and six brothers and sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents. Donald E. Jaminet Sr.

Donald E. "Shadow" Jaminet 72, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, April 7, 2007, at a local care center. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Michael Catholic Church in South Sioux City.

Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery. Viswill 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

Donald was born Feb. 25, 1935, in Alton, Iowa, the son of Raymond and Martha (Dieckmann) Jaminet. During his freshman year of school, his peers began to call him since he was so tall and thin. After graduating from South Sioux City High School, he joined the Iowa National Guard, serving from 1955 to 1960. On May 28, 1955, he married Delores Beck.

He was a South Sioux City volunteer fireman from 1955 to the mid 1960s. He worked for various construction firms, retiring in 2002 from Farley Construction, headquartered in Kansas City, due to poor health. In his younger days, he was involved with racing stock cars. Later, he appreciated gardening and was an avid recycler of used valuables or as others did say, a junk collector. He is survived by two sons and their wives, Donald Jr.

and Barbara and Douglas and Marge, all of Sioux City; five daughters, Diane and her husband, Roger Plum of Sioux City, Denise and her husband, Scott Dilley of Sioux City, Dawn Jaminet of Sioux City, Derinda Jaminet-Simpson and her significant other, Barbara Simpson of Des Moines and Darla Jaminet of Rice, 17 grandchildren; 15 greatgrandchildren; a brother and his wife, Jerry and Patty Jaminet of Rockwall, Texas; two sisters, Darlene Baker and Janice Pfrimmer, both of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews. He then went to work for Roberts Dairy until he served in the U.S. Navy. He was in the Pacific region during World War IL. He was united in marriage to Betty Huss on April 7, 1948, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City.

He was a truck driver most of his life, retiring in 1983 from American Freight Systems. He was a retired teamster. He was an active member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and later Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He was an avid card player, loved and supported Heelan High School.

He enjoyed sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes. He was a 7 o'clock mall walker for years. He will be remembered for being a loving husband, father, grandfather (Bumpa) and great-grandfather. He leaves to cherish his memory wife of 59 years, Betty of Sioux City; four children and their spouses, Bob Jr. and Nelly of Sioux City, Beverly and Mike O'Dell of Lake Lotawana, Brian and Sue of Sioux City and Brent and Angel of Blue Springs, grandchildren, Marcy and her husband, Beau Santee, Michelle McGrew, Dustin O'Dell, Brandy O'Dell, Kyle Christian, Dan' Bauerly, Kate and her husband, Travis Eilers, Matt Bauerly, and Joe, Aaron and Kelsey Tweet; seven greatgrandchildren; two brothers, Vernon Bauerly of Sioux City and Don Bauerly and his wife, Betty of Sergeant Bluff; sisters-in-law, Irene Molden of Sioux City and Janet Bauerly of Pierz, brothers-inlaw, Laverne Huss of Oakview, Henry Huss and his wife, Jeanne of Calimesa, and Richard Huss and his wife, Darlene of Sioux City; many nieces and nephews; and special friends.

On June 6, 1948, she was united in marriage to Dean McClary. Dean passed away Dec. 4, 1986. She was employed by the city of Sioux City as a secretary in the finance department for 18 years, prior to her retirement. She had member of Morningside Lutheran Church 1948.

She also was a member of the Sioux City Camera Club and the Senior Citizen Center. She loved spending time with her family and taking many photographs. She married Chris Baier on Sept.

8, 1932. They farmed in the Wayne vicinity until December 1971, when they retired and moved into Wayne. She enjoyed playing cards and visiting with friends and family. She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Central Social Circle Club and City Sisters Club.
