He did not let them down. The second-year defensive tackle helped the Bears pick up where they left off last season, when they lost just once and had the NFL's dominant defense. Chicago sacked Dallas quarterbacks three times and pressured them constantly.

The Bear defense scored the game's first touchown on a 48-yard runback of a fumble recovery by strong safety Dave Duerson, and Perry then capped the performance with his TD. Steve Fuller, who replaced Jim McMahon at quarterback to start the second quarter, directed a drive to the Cowboy 1-yard line, going the final 16 yards on a rollout. Ditka then inserted Perry at running back. Fuller handed the ball to the Fridge and when no hole opened, Perry just kept pushing until he was over the goalline. imi' WEMBLEY, England (AP) On a night when the "Star-Spangled Banner'! was booed, soccer songs filled the air and a streaker hit the turf why shouldn't a 308-pound running back score a touchdown? Actually, William "The Refrigerator" Perry's one-yard scoring strut was among the more commonplace events Sunday as pro football returned to Britain.

The Chicago Bears beat the Dallas Cowboys 17-6 in an NFL exhibiton opener billed as American Bowl '86, the latest attempt to show England what big-time football is all about. More than 82,000 fans, including a large group of Americans but comprised mainly of soccer- and cricket-loving Britons, packed Wembley Stadium for the match, and they saw the best and worst of the sport. The first two games of the American Legion Eastern final series in Whiteville may be more costly than just the two losses for Rocky Mount. Post 58 lost lead-off batter and center fielder Anthony Brown to injury in Game One's 5-4 loss, i But the biggest loss may have been after blowing a 2-0 lead and losing 3-2 Saturday night.

Rocky Mount, which breezed to victory most of the season, may have lost its confidence. Although Whiteville, now 21-10, is obviously a good ballclub, Post 137 is not considered to be as strong as it was last season. Whiteville won the state title in 1985. Rocky Mount, 22-5 going into the series, has played and beaten several strong teams this season. But hey, this is Whiteville.

Rocky Mount lost the controversial Eastern finals last year to Whiteville as nothing seemed to go right. Things aren't going well this year either. Close calls have indeed gone to Whiteville. But is it a jinx? Rocky Mount coach Jerry Carter said it is only a jinx if his players believe it to be. The Post 58 players were in disbelief in the dugout after blowing Game Two's lead.

Some were comparing the series with last year's. Some were comparing Game Two with One, which was highlighted by another controversial call that aided the Whiteville win. The players seemed disjointed and almost frantic in the dugout as if fate were against them. Post 58 fans seemed to have gotten the impression that everybody, including the umpire, is against Rocky Mount. "I understand why nobody wants to come here and play Whiteville," one fan yelled.

The players hear these things. Fans will be fans but maybe the Post 58 players are so involved in the surroundings and the self-pity that they forgei'to concentrate on hitting the ball. "Five of our first six hitters are seniors," Rocky Mount assistant coach Moe Bauer said. "They need to take over and lead us out of this." Three starting seniors Mike Morris, Hank Jones and Jeff Morgan have failed to get a hit in the two games. Post 58.

"It makes no sense." he said after a massive collapse of ihe other contenders put him in position Sunday to win the Western Open golf tournament. "I don't understand this game. I suppose when I die still won't understand this game," Kite said. "There are times when you go into the last round with the lead, and play your heart out and shoot a good score and somebody has one better and you lose. "Then, maybe on the very next week, something like this happens.

It just makes no sense." But it made him a winner again. Kite, nine shots back at one point in the last round, pulled himself together and beat the brutal Butler National Golf Club course with the best round of the day, a 4-under-par 68. Then he sat around for a cpuple of hours waiting for someone to beat his four-day total of 2-under-par 286. Fred Couples and South Africans Nick Price and David Frost, who finished birdie-birdie, eventually tied Kite and forced a playoff. Kite, so frequently a contender but so infrequently a winner in the last six years quickly solved that tangle.

He hit a sand wedge second shot to within four feet of the flag on the first playoff hole and rapped the putt into the back of the cup for a winning birdie. Rocky Mount has been averaging 10 hits per game with a batting average of .315. Against Whiteville, Post 58 is hitting only .162. "We didn't hit when we needed to." Bauer said. "We're not taking advantage of the few opportunities to score." Rocky Mount players hit the ball hard several times in Game Two but either it went directly to a player or speedy Chris Threadgill ran it down in the outfield. "We did hit some hard ones and they were caught," Bauer said.

"But we can't let that get us down." Bauer said the leadership needed could come from anybody. "We've got 12 men capable of playing," he said. "On a given night, any one of them can pick us up." Pitcher Phil Bryant was almost that player in Game Two as he gave up seven hits while striking out four and walking four. Bryant also singled with two outs on two occasions to keep rallies alive. But both times, Rocky Mount came up short.

Post 58 led 2-0 going into the sixth but a fielding error by Mike Morris at third opened the door. Whitevilie's Joe Reaves reached on the error, went to second on a passed ball and scored on a double by Robbie Watts. With one out, a sacrifice fly by Steven Bright tied the score at 2-2. In the eighth, Whitevilie's Threadgill made two good running catches on long hard drives by Shelton Grant and John Adams. In the bottom of the inning, another error at third by Morris to start the inning prooved costly.

Again it was Reaves who got to first. Watts singled before Herman Jones brought Reaves home on a sacrifice fly for the winning run. "I hope he can overcome them (the errors)," Bauer said of Morris. "You have to go right back out and play." In the first inning of Game Two, it appeared that Post 58 had overcome the first-game loss. Mike Davis led off with a single, then stole second.

Grant, the next batter, singled to drive in Davis. With one out, Bobbitt drove in Grant with a sacrifice fly to right. But Whiteville pitcher Ken Nance, 5-2, settled down to strike out six and allowed only four more hits in going the distance. Rocky Mount pitchers Tim Wilson, 8-1, and Phil Bryant, 4-1, each got their first losses of the year against Whiteville. "Being behind O-2 is not the end of the world," Bauer said.

"Whiteville was behind 0-2 in one series and came back to win it." Being down two games to none means Rocky Mount cannot win the series without going back down to Whiteville for a sixth and possibly seventh game. Adams is expected to start on the mound tonight against Whiteville, which plans to go with Watts. USFL owners meet today NEW YORK (AP), Divided in opinion, USFL owners meet today to decide the fate of their troubled league. But only a sweeping mandate to continue from all eight owners will keep the USFL in business, according to Commissioner Harry Usher. "It won't really be a vote," Usher said. "It's a decision the league will have to make. If it's five to three to play, you can't play with five teams." If pre-meeting reports are accurate, owners are split exactly in half on continuation.

They show the vote as 4-4, with New Jersey, Tampa Bay, Orlando and Arizona pushing for continuation, and Baltimore, Birmingham, Jacksonville and Memphis leaning toward one of the other alternatives.
