It: 1BJ YUUtNti, gec-rj. ry-STO THE PUBLIC A number of false ru-1L2 mors have been circulated in the city in regard to our movements of the Steam Tow-Boat Reliei. That we had made exorbitant demands from the merchants for the use of said boat; that we had asked the sums of ten thousand dollars, and at other times five thousand dollars, belore we would budge from the wharf with our boat. We fsel it an act of justice to ourselves and to the public that we shcu'd give a flat deniil to all these reports, as they are, allof them, gross fabrications.

Our Boat is ready at all times for the accommodation of the public, to perform any duty, however perilous it may be, for the relief of the shipping interests connected with our city. Our charge for the use of the boat is ten dollars per hour, for taking out vessels when the navigation of he ha' lior is practicable without heavy obstructions from the ioe, but, v. hen the river is closed up by a severe season like the. present, our charge is fifteen dollars per hour and tlrs Is. ter rate was the oiiargeof tlie cnartered company which built the coat, ana at no time have we demanded more.

In order that the public may have a more fa 1 understanding of the reawua of those rates, it may hardly be necessary to remark that the price of good pine wood, for towing pu'-poses, is 5 -50 per cord, and that the boat will require about two cords per hour to move her along when having to lab under such heavy obstructions; and, as we crated before, we are ready at all times to ireet the public wants Jor a reasonable compensation, for surely our risks, our labor, anc our expenses are worth something, and we me-ely publish tuis in vindication of our own conduct to the public. ThCTe is a rational and infallible test of the quality of French republicanism in the late vote of th people in favor of Louis Napoleon.

That vote was given intelligently, and tere is no excuse for it, no palliation for it to he edaeed from any snpposable ijnoranee of the man, or his measures. One fact in the case, which will ccnrto almost every body who contemplates the n.Jair, utters en unqualified condemnation of that people, Who sustained ths usurper and votsd their unction of the atrocious act by which he attained his "bad eminence." We refer to the censorship of the prs. Nothing so distinctly characterizes any man and Fetrays the temper of hbi mind, ss his abhorrence of a free press. A Reactions press, we hope, wi.l ever eseite abhorrence of the American people; bit a free, outspoken, honest expression of a min's mind, whether his sentiments are animate -vvith truth or tortured ty error, is tba surest gnrr-jintee we have in a republic, of the expanding elements of iis perpetuity. And whesa majority of tns people we suppoae suoh a thirg F08 Bible here is prepared to assent to the restriction of the real liberty of the press, from that day we may date with certainty the decline of the republic, snd the ascendancy of a power averse to the liberties of tha people.

The liberty of the press and the libsrty of the people ara inseparable; and -vhen the hand of tns litter is rawed egsicst the firmer, the irepulsj must be fanatical, for the blow would be suicidal.
