2 The Sioux City Journal. Sunday. Septembers. 1993 Abbott joins select company with no-hitter against Indians MAJOR 9j) ROUNDUP '''J p- i -4 A v- i I 1 By The Associated Press NEW YORK Jim Abbott never dreamed he would be on the same no-hitter list with Allie Reynolds and Don Larsen. He just wanted to pitch in the major leagues.

Abbott tossed a no-hitter Saturday as the New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians 4-0. It was the Yankees' seventh regular-season no-hitter and the eighth overall, counting post-season. Abbott, 25, is a fan favorite everywhere because he has overcome the handicap of being born without a right hand. This effort will only add to his many amazing accomplishments. Larsen pitched a perfect game on Oct.

8, 1956 at Yankee Stadium against the Brooklyn Dodgers. Reynolds pitched two no-hitters in 1961, beating Cleveland and Boston. "I was just thrilled to death," said Abbott, who acknowledged the cheers by tipping his cap and waving to the crowd. "I never expected to throw a no-hitter." Other Yankees to toss no-hitters are George Mogridge, Sam Jones, Monte Pearson and Dave Righetti. Righetti was the last Yankee to pitch an official no-hitter prior to Abbott t.
