opener and last week lost a tough one to No, 1-ranked Ohio State. It was only the fourth time in Coach Joe Paterno's 11 years at Penn State that the Lions lost two of their first three games. Commings had said before the game that the Hawkeyes needed an upset over a rvajor opponent to give his recruiting program a boost. He was hoping to beat one of three top flight opponents on his schedule Penn State, USC next week and Ohio State after that. Early in the first quarter, Iowa started a drive from its 25, picked up three first downs and advanced to the Penn State 37.

Quarterback Butch Caldwell's first down pass was intercepted by Penn State's Gary Petercuskie at the Lions' one-yard line. State was unable to gain and a short punt set up Iowa at the Penn State 33, from where they drove for the winning score. STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP Photofax). Aroused Cyclones Bury 47-7 But a third down pass failed and the Stars were forced to punt. In the final seconds with the game hopelessly lost, reserve quarterback Dan Socknat rolled to his left on a keeper play, advancing 51 yards before being dumped at the Washington 14. But Socknat failed on a pass attempt and a final running play carried only to the 12. Bauer in eight carries rushed for an amazing 171 yards, averaging 21.4 per try.

Dummermuth, who had rushed for 109 first half yards, finished with 115 in 18 carries. Cody Harris was North's top Vusher with 43 yards in 13 attempts. Socknat, who relieved Steve Cochrane in the fourth, was sacked a couple of times and finished with 35 net yards. North now is 2-1, 1-1 in the SIC. Washington is 3-0 and 2-0 in the Then followed the two blocked punts.

Defensive end Mario Galindo, a junior, knifed in to block Dallas McLeod's punt that went out of bounds on the North 24 for a two-yard loss. Perry Dunmire scored six plays later from the two. Three minutes later, Galindo again had a big hand in a second blocked punt. This time Brian Her-manson, another defensive end, picked up the loose ball on the North i 12 and danced in. The Warriors scored once more in the fourth on a four-yard run by reserve Jon Krug.

Mark Amundson kicked the first five PAT's and Craig Bartels the final one. North's two penetrations into Warrior land came when the Stars picked up two straight first downs in the second quarter to the Dakota 44 Coach Steve Gunther and his Stars would like to forget this one but, of course, it had to be an enjoyable night for Washington and head coach Dennis Moller. The Warriors opened the scoring in the fading seconds of the first quarter when senior back Dan Dummermuth burst through a hole up the middle and outraced the North secondary 49 yards into the end zone. Only 29 seconds remained in the period. Late in the second, the Warriors struck again.

This time quarterback Brian Bauer swept left on an option play, found an opening and kept going 72 yards He was so elated he carried the ball one-handed high over his head the final 25 yards. In the 21-point third quarter, -Bauer, who had a sensational rushing night, caught, the Stars' defense flat again, going 39 yards on a keeper. By Rugs Ward Journal Sports Writer It was just one of those nightmarish nights. Sioux Falls Washington steamrolled North 42-0 at Roberts Stadium Saturday night in a Sioux Interstate Conference game billed as a "tossup." The difference was that it was the Stars who were tossed. The Dakotans, now sitting atop the SIC race, could do little wrong and the Stars nothing rifrtit.

North, whicp haa produced 74 points in two previous games, penetrated Washington territory only twice. The Stars lost one fumble and the Warriors promptly cashed that in. But what probably hurt North the most were two blocked punts in the third. The visitors made hay of both those opportunities. Badgers Hold Off WSU Bid MADISON, Wis.

(AP) -Mike Carroll passed for 150 yards and three touchdowns and scored on a five-yard out, leading Wisconsin to a 35-26 college football victory over Washington State Saturday. Carroll, who had entered the game as major college i football's eighth-ranked passer, completed seven of 17. Tight end Ron Egloff caught four for 90 yards, including one for a touchdown from 22 yards out," and set up two other scores with receptions good for 24 and 47 yards. when tackle Tom Randall intercepted a Mark Rohally pass at Kent State's 26. Iowa State hosts Oklahoma in a Big Eight conference opener next Saturday and Kent State is home to Air Force.

1 Junior quarterback Mike Tryon directed the Cyclone attack most of the fourth period and hit running back Jeff Curry on a 17-yard pass for the final score. Stanley, who had connected on 13 of 18 passes in his first two games, was six of ten for 111 yards against Kent State. he passes that ball, doesn't he?" said Bruce of Stanley. "And Ray Hardee those catches were super. "I thought our defense did a fine job, and I think Kent State must have been a little they are a young ball club and will get better." Kent State Coach Dennis Fitzgerald said, "We just didn't play very well.

When they wanted to run, they ran. When they wanted to pass, they passed. "The Cyclones came out and got after us. They were prepped for Kent State even though they play Oklahoma next week." AMES, Iowa (AP) Iowa State quarterback Wayne Stanley, the Big Eight Conference's total offense leader, ran for one touchdown and passed for two more to lead the undefeated Cyclones to a 47-7 football vie-' tory over Kent State Saturday. The Cyclones entered the game leading the National Collegiate Athletic Association in scoring, with 99 points in their first two games.

Stanley entered the contest with 299 yards passing and seven touchdowns. Coach Earle Bruce's team rushed for 334 yards and passed for another 183 against the Golden Flashes (1-2). Kent State scored in the fourth period when quarterback Mike Whalen ran 26 yards. Iowa State scored on six of nine first half possessions, including field goals of 43 and 34 yards by Scott Kollman, who also connected on five extra points in the game. Stanley ran seven yards for the opening touchdown, then hit Ray Hardee on scoring passes of 18 and 13 yards.

Tailback Dexter Green took a pitch-out from Buddy Hardeman, who alternated with Stanley, and ran five yards for their fourth touchdown of the game. The score capped a 59-yard, 10-play drive. Washington State, 0-3, scored on a one-yard run by Dan Doornink 2:10 into the game after Schwartz had recovered a fumbled handoff at the Badger 21.

Wisconsin sophomore Scott Erdmann raced 13 yards to the Washington State 31 with an interception moments later, and a 24-yard Carroll-to-Egloff screen pass set up Carroll's five-yard scoring run as the Badgers tied the game 7-7. The Badgers mounted a 35-14 lead and held off a rally as Cougar reserve quarterback Jack Thompson passed for two late touchdowns, the last a 30yarder to Doornink with 2:24 to play. That score came 59 seconds after a three-yard touchdown pass from Thompson to Mike Levenseller and a recovery of an onside kick by Washington State. In those same 24 minutes the Crusaders piled up 172 yards (they had 294 for the game) and 10 first downs. Courey led the Heelan ball carriers and Mike Walsh added 78 yards to the Crusader total.

A few moments later the Crusaders struck again after a short Kuemper punt left Heelan 52 yards away.

Again it was Courey the crafty senior went the route on the first play. Heelan made it 15-0 early in the second quarter when John Harty tackled Ken Nurse in the end zone for a safety. The Crusaders ran the half-time count to 22-0 when they drove the distance following the kick after the safety. Mike Callahan's two-yard dash got the score. Kuemper's only serious threat against the Heelan regulars came in the third period when the Crusaders fumbled a Knight punt at the 15.

A penalty moved the ball inside the 10, but the Heelan defense pushed CK back and made it fourth down from the 12. Mark Beck intercepted Nurse's pass in the end zone to kill the Kuemper effort. Heelan started its final drive late in the third quarter and scored 1:13 into the final period. That tally came when Courey found Eric Henkowski by himself on a fourth down play from the Knights' 28. Kuemper finally started moving in the late stages.

Steve Glass capped a long drive when he plunged in to make it 29-6 with 4:50 left. Then Heelan fumbled at its own 25 and Glass again tallied with 2:19 left. Kirk Lengeling got the last tally of the game as time ran out when he was on the receiving end of Nurse's pass. The play covered 80 yards. An indication of the Heelan defense comes in the first half statistics.

The Knights got just five first downs and only 58 total yards the first 24' minutes. The hosts wound up with 243 total yards. CARROLL, Iowa Sioux City Heelan struck quickly and ran its football record to 3-0 with a 29-20 triumph over Carroll Kuemper Saturday night. The final score doesn't really indicate the Crusaders' dominance of this contest. All of Kuemper's points came in the last five minutes of the game against Heelan second and third stringers.

Heelan's strong" first unit defense didn't allow a score and was, in fact, threatened only once by the Knights' offense. The Sioux Cityans got on the scoreboard before four minutes had elapsed in the contest. Russ St. Cyr recovered a Kuemper fumble at the Knights' 27 and the visitors scored quickly. North -Dakota State turned two blocked kicks into points the final five minutes and nipped Morningside 16-7 in the North Central Conference opener here Saturday night.

After the Chiefs fought back to forge a 7-7 tie in the third period, they had an opportunity to grab the lead with just five minutes to go. But Tim Geary's field goal try from the 36 was blocked by linebacker Jerry Rosburg and Rick Budde, All-NCC -linebacker last fall, picked up the football and dashed 71 yards to paydirt. The Chiefs were unable to move after the kickoff and on fourth down Joe Longo's punt was blocked by Don Meyer. Longo chased down the elusive ball in the end zone but was able to do nothing except cover the ball for a safety. It was a rugged defensive battle all night.

North Dakota State put the only first half points on the board by driving 65 yards In seven plays. Ross Baglien got the touchdown on a 33-yard scamper around his right end. Freshman quarterback Mark Rudrud, subbing for starter Randy Thiele who had a virus, completed a big 13-yard pass to Bill Nutton to keep the drive alive. Later In the half the Bison drove to Morningside'! 2 but Art Turner sacked Rudrud on a third down play and a fourth down pass went Incomplete. Twice in the first quarter the Bison missed field goals.

Morningside got the equalizer late In the third frame. The Chiefs marched 54 yards In six plays. After Tim Winter lost four yards on a pitch, Mieras nailed Longo for 23 yards to the NDS 35, Winter then got one yard on first down, two more on second but Mieras dropped the ball while AT 1 The tiebreaking score came after Steve Siebecker had recovered a fumble for the Chiefs on the Bison 20. After Mieras lost four, a pass to Longo was incomplete and then Mieras was sacked again for four yards in reverse. Geary then went for the go-ahead goal but Rosburg and Co.

had other ideas. Budde's run with the blocked goal equaled the NCC record set by Jerry Dahl of NDS in 1974. Morningside was not without its defensive standouts. Tackle Bob Luke and Siebecker were strong as were Engler and Blum as the Chief defense held NDS to 63 passing yards. But 230 on the ground and a Bison defense which stopped the Chiefs with 25 rushing yards proved too much.

The Bison are now 1-0 and atop the NCC while Morningside Is 0-1. Overall the winners are 1-2 and the Chiefs 0-3. It's another "cheaters night" at the South Dakota oval. That means that drivers whose cars are legal at their regular tracks will find those same cars legal at Interstate. Since the season championships have already been decided, there's only one real question about tonight's card and it deals with Corky Bailey. The Sioux Cityan has been on a hot streak in the street stocks division and the question Is: Can he be stopped? Bailey will be looking for his Uth consecutive A Feature victory tonight.
