In fact, last week's telethon may have raised more money per hour than a telethon held last spring, said Bob D'Andrea, president of WCLF-TV, Channel 22, and five affiliated Christian Television Network stations throughout the Southeast.

D'Andrea said monetary pledges for "Vision "87," which ended Sunday morning, were up about 2 percent, compared with last year's. The Christian network, with WCLF as its flagship station, has two weeklong telethons every year to cover operational costs. D'Andrea said $500,000 was pledged during last week's telethon, compared with $540,000 during last spring's telethon. "Last year, we telethoned an extra day and a half, so that when you look at a per-hour basis, we did about 2 (percent) or 3 percent better he said. '87" aired for about 11 hours each day, with one day devoted to raising money for medical missions in Zaire.

D'Andrea said it is difficult to compare the telethons because of other factors. For instance, last week the network's station in Winston-Salem, N.C., was shut down for three days because of problems with a transmitter. Also, bad weather diminished the quality of transmissions from Channel 22 for one day. But D'Andrea said he didn't believe the continuing controversy surrounding national television evangelists was a negative factor. The turmoil began three weeks ago when PTL ministries President Jim Bakker resigned after admitting he had had a "sexual encounter" with a church secretary on Dec.

6, 1980, in the Sheraton Sand Key Hotel on Clearwater Beach. Bakker was visiting Clearwater Beach in 1980 to appear on a WCLF telethon. He had been invited by John Wesley Fletcher, a former WCLF director who introduced Bakker to the church secretary, Jessica Hahn. D'Andrea said Fletcher, who was an Oklahoma City-based evangelist at the time, later left the WCLF board of directors after losing credentials from the Assemblies of God, which also is Bakker's church. Fletcher lost his credentials because of a problem with alcohol, an Assemblies of God spokeswoman said.

Since Bakker's resignation in March, other evangelists have made headlines by criticizing or defending him. During the final broadcast of last week's telethon, D'Andrea said he thought the reason so much publicity has been given to Bakker's brief "sexual encounter" is an age-old sin "the love of money." Secular television stations have devoted a lot of air time to the scandal in an attempt to discredit Christian television stations, which have encroached on their market in recent years, D'Andrea said. The television networks are losing market share and money because of cable television, and its ever-increasing number of Christian television stations. There are more than 200 stations today, compared to just a handful seven years ago, D'Andrea said. WCLF began in October 1979.

D'Andrea said market share lost to Christian television represents billions of dollars of lost revenue for secular network television. "What else can they do?" he asked. "Except try to discredit, try to disgrace (Christian television) D'Andrea and his wife, Molly, who are members of the First As of egg hunt will start at 10 a.m. April 18.
