Vsricose veins, the painful and unsightly swelling of veins In the legs, are caused by excessive accumulation of blood In the veins and tissues of the lower tegs. If only the veins nesr the skin's surface are sRected, surgery can often relieve the symptoms.

Dr. Steven Bumham, director of the vascular laboratory at the hospital, said the new diagnostic test Is called photo plethysmography. A small photoeUdrie cell, about the Vie of a cufflink, Is taped to the patient's ankle. By directing a beam of Infrared light Into the ankle and measuring the amount of light that bounces back, the cell can detect changes In the volume of Mood In the tissues just beneath the skin. Measurements are conducted before and after eserctss.

In a person with varicose veins, the mount of pooled blood In the foot changes very little during exercise or returns to the original blood volume much faster. "Blood sloshes back down the veins and fills up fte kg before It can be replaced by fresh, oxygenated blood from Ins arteries," Bumham staid. To simulate ssrgtry, technicians block off the diseased vein by Inflating a blood pressure cuff around the calf and thigh. They they repeat the blood volume test to compare the results. there is an Improvement, It means the blood has been successfully diverted Is deeper veins.

"Such a result tells us that an operation to remove the surface vein Is very likely to succeed in relieving the symptoms," Bumham said. "About the only thing we had to go on la the past was judgment that comes with experience," he sskL "But that doesn't help the young physician who doesn't hsve much experience. "Now, with this test, the novice csn rival the wise old doctor in selecting patients for surgery, becsyse we hsve found this to be a really valid test for predicting success," he said. riKTstmtoorsT 1tS.CWc Street aim Suit el. Johnson believes he has a down-to-earth solution to the nation's energy problems. The Union County commissioner has Installed a geothermal beating system under 10 feet of dirt In his backyard. "The process Is so simple, It's stupid," Johnson said recently. The system involves circulating air through a pipe system, heating the air by running it over copper coils filled with hot water and circulating It into the house. Under Johnson's house is what he calls the "mole lab," a quarter-horsepower engine to pump the air, a 40-gallon hot water heater and a manual damper system.

Because ground temperature in the Piedmont has a constant range of 53 degrees to 73 degrees, Johnson says the dirt does a lot of the heating and insulating. "It's a lot cheaper to heat air to a comfortable range when it is 53 degrees than when it's 30 degrees or lower," he said. Johnson sid he developed the idea while daydreaming one day last summer. A building 'contractor, Johnson estimated that his system cost 32,000 to $3,000 to build. That's competitive with conventional systems, and operational costs are much lower, he said.

Johnson has plans to market his invention, but he hasn't decided by what means: Rocky Mount Memorial Park Is The Time To Invest In Your Cemetery Estate SAVE 50 By Purchasing Before May 1st, 1980 Ask About Our Special FREE PLAN For Children Under 18 Years of Age CALL 443-4065 Without Obligation SAVE 2.00 MORE ON ROCKY MOUNT MEMORIAL PARKS' Read The Want Ads CAN YOU REALLY AFFORD ANYTHING LESS In lieu of flowers the family of James Howard Dew asks that contributions be made to Calvary Baptist Church in Wilmington. iWBGIHlT'S TV Kurfee's Is Still Curving aijLiii-jil 1 mi twin If. WINSTON-SALEM (AP) Some people think they have Marshall Kurfees to thank or blame when- they drive through the treacherous curve in Interstate 40 over Hawthorne Road. It's called Kurfees' Curve, after the colorful mayor of the city when the interstate was planned and built. Although that was more than 20 years ago, highway engineers and motorists are still grappling with the problems. It may well be the worst stretch of interstate highway in the state, with hundreds of accidents reported ii SAVONG over the years on the short stretch.

Up To $1 50 On Some Models But while Kurfees Black or gold. Jt ackowledges some respon Scott sibility for the highway, he denies he had anything to do with the curve. "They give me a lot of credit for getting Interstate 40 through the city," said Kurfees, now 75. "They got to having some accidents on one curve, so they named it Kurfees Curve." Winston-Salem's eight miles of cross-town interstate highway is narrow and traffic-choked, up to 85,000 cars a day on four lanes. But it represents only the gateway to hell the long curving bridge over i Hawthorne Road.

The curve is poorly banked, congested and dangerously narrow shoulders are almost nonexistent. "That road is as dangerous as a cocked pistol on a nursery Gino Black or brown. $75.95 floor," said former state Rep. Lawrence Davis several years ago. "I just take it good naturedly." The curve from time to time has become a political issue. A few years ago, the county Republicans paid for a billboard by an entrance to the curve reading, "Slow down. The Democrats have thrown another curve at you." The state hired a consultant in the mid-70s to try to find a solution.
