(Journal Photo) 7 young Salmons earn berths for district 'Hoop Shoot' meet Seven young Salina basketball enthusiasts have earned berths in the Elks Northwest Kansas District 'Hoop Shoot' competition at Edson Jan. 14. The Salina youths won age group titles in the local competition last Friday.

Rod and Gun club will meet on Tuesday The Saline County Rod and Gun Club will hold its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday at South Junior High School. Jerry Connley, director of the Kansas Forestry, Fish and Game Commission, will be the speaker. He will talk about the commission's new legislative package. Buffalo burgers will be served. The club also will observe farmer appreciation night.

Central came away with a championship, a second place finish and two third places.

South picked up a second place finish and three fourth places. Central's Chris Bell won the 119- pound title with a pair of pins and a decision. South's Steve Tisdell came within one point of winning the 145 title. He lost a 1-0 decision in the finals on a penalty point. Central's Tuck Allen finished third at 186 and teammate Clarence Cox, a South, Central girls play tonight There will be plenty of girls' basketball action for Salina fans Monday night.

Undefeated Salina South, now 4-0, will entertain Junction City at 8 p.m. Monday in the South gym while Central takes on McPherson at 8 in the Central gym. South meets a Junction City team which is 3-2 overall. South holds wins over Salina Central, Manhattan, McPherson and Great Bend. The Cougars have had a week layoff since beating Great Bend, 53-40, last Monday.

Central will be looking for its 4th straight win. The Mustangs started with a victory, then dropped two straight games. Central now owns back-to-back wins over Manhattan, Junction City and Council Grove. McPherson is 4-3. Sacred Heart's girls, still winless, take on Lindsborg here Tuesday night.

(UPI) Carl Selmer, who served 11 years as Nebraska's offensive line coach and helped the Cornhuskers reach national prominence, has been hired as offensive coordinator at Kansas State, coach Jim Dickey announced today. This past season Selmer was offensive line coach at North Texas State. He also was offensive coordinator for Miami and served as head coach for the Hurricane in 1976. "Carl is considered in the coaching profession as one of the finest coaches in America," said Dickey. "Not only is he a proven outstanding football mind, but he is a tremendous person.

Kansas State people will love him." "I'm ready to get started and anxious to work with Coach Dickey," said Selmer. Selmer, a native of Minneapolis, never played prep football but became a standout tackle at Wyoming. He began his coaching career at Worland (Wyo.) High School and in nine seasons his teams compiled an 80-14-2 record. He joined Devaney at Wyoming and after five seasons moved with Devaney to Nebraska.
