Each of these methods to improve mathematics education is promoted by Indiana University of Pennsylvania's Hands-On Math Education for Pennsylvania Learning and Teaching (HOME PLaTe) project. HOME PLaTe, funded by the state's No Child Left Behind act, uses fun, hands-on activities to teach mathematics needed for Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) testing. Workshop instructors are college professors and K-12 teachers.

The three-year project began in March 2004 and will end in September 2006. This program expands lUP's Statistics Education through Quantitative Literacy (SEQuaL) program, which ran from 1992-2003. Most recently, HOME PLaTe facuity presented workshops to teachers in the Purchase Line," Penns Manor and Homer Center School Districts. Last summer, HOME PLaTe hosted its first on-campus teacher workshop. Throughout the year, HOME PLaTe conducts monthly meetings at individual schools in order to reach a farger number of teachers and assess their needs.

Smith, Clymer Police log Lottery The Indiana Gazette Indiana Alleged attacker jailed An Indiana man was charged Sunday with attempted homicide and six other counts in connection with attacks against three people during a disturbance at 46 S. Fifth Indiana Borough police reported. Jessie Harper, 23, of Indiana arraigned before District Justice Jennifer Rega and was held at the Indiana County Jail when he was unable to post S25.000 cash bail. Police charged that Harper repeatedly struck Kenneth Ashley Jr.

of Indiana with an aluminum baseball bat at 3:08 a.m., when Ashley, 20, tried to settle an argument between Harper and several other people. Harper also hit Nicole Evans, 21, of Indiana and Brandon Lynch, 23, of Emest when they intervened in the attack on Ashley, according to police. In a news release, police reported that responding officers captured Harper after a foot chase. He was charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, harassment, disorderly conduct and escapa A spokeswoman at Indiana Regional Medical Center said this morning that Ashley received outpatient treatment for his injuries. A preliminary hearing for Harper is scheduled for Nov.

23. Shoplifting charge Gregory Slezak, 29, of Blairsville stole five candy bars from the store at 768 Wayne Ave. at 12:46 a.m. Saturday and struggled with two store security officers who stopped him outside, Indiana Borough police reported. Police charged Slezak with retail theft, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness, according to a news release.

District Justice Rega released Slezak without requiring him to post bond and ordered him to appear Tuesday for a preliminary hearing. Drug suspect held Borough police found Jonathan Hockenos of Altoona in possession of six plastic bags of suspected marijuana at 2:12 a.m. Sunday when he was taken into custody for public drunkenness on the 800 block of Church Street, according to a police news release. Hockenos, 20, attempted to punch police as he was being arrested, police reported. Police took Hockenos before District Justice Rega for arraignment on a felony count of possession of marijuana and eight other charges.

Hockenos was sent to the county jail when he was unable to post $5,000 bail and was scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on Nov. 23, according to police. Vandalism Justin Horvath of Doylestown, Bucks County, told borough police Thursday that someone broke a window of his vehicle while it was parked in a lot at 1075 Water SL Someone hurled a piece of asphalt through a window and shade of a dormitory room in Shafer Hall at 3:34 a.m. Sunday, IUP campus police reported. Alcohol-related arrests Campus police wrote summary citations to six people during the weekend, according to news releases issued this morning: Adam Lippincott, 18, of Moon, Allegheny County, was charged with underage drinking and public drunkenness at 4:51 a.m.

Saturday in a first-floor restroom of Stewart Hall and was temporarily detained at the Indiana County Jail. Damn Rimbey, 19, of Moon, Allegheny County, was arrested for underage drinking and public drunkenness in the Tumbull Hall parking lot at 3:13 a.m. Saturday and was held at the county jail. Kristin Siemion, 18, of Lawrence Hall, IUP was cited for underage drinking and public drunkenness in theTurnbull Hall parking lot Sunday at 1:26 a.m. William Balint IV, 22, of Indiana was arrested for public drunkenness on Grant Street near Wahr Hall at 12:30 a.m.

Sunday. Nathan Bihling, 18, of Shafer Hall, was cited for underage drinking and public drunkenness at 1:13 a.m. Saturday at a parking lot along Maple Street. Carrie Acklin, 19, of Campus Towers, IUP, was charged with underage drinking in her dormitory room on Saturday at 12:39 a.m. Man cited Kein McCIendon of Philadelphia began shouting "stop hitting me, stop beating while a state police trooper questioned him in the parking lot of the Peking Chinese Restaurant, 496 S.

13th on Friday at 9:15 a.m., according to a news release issued this morning. McCIendon was cited for disorderly conduct. White Township Forgery reported Someone used a counterfeit $50 bill to make a purchase at the Wal-Mart store at SouthTowne Plaza on Wednesday, state police reported today. Green Township Burglary reported Somebody climbed through a window to get into the Valley Inn along Route 286 on Saturday at 5 a.m,, according to state police. Troopers reported nothing was broken or missing.

Armstrong Township Home burglarized Someone entered the resi- dence of David Yewcic at the Sylvan Acres mobile-home park between Nov. 7 and Friday and stole a Kodak digital camera and $100 in change, state police reported. Theft reported A chopper style mini-bike was stolen Wednesday from Bernie's Custom Carts shop along Route 422 near Shelocta, state police reported today. No estimate of the loss was given. Burrell Township Statue swiped State police reported today a cement lion was stolen Thursday from the yard at Fred Kline's residence along Bridge Street.

Plumcreek Armstrong County Drug violation Nicholas Kutsch, 20, of Shelocta had drug paraphernalia in his possession at 9:15 p.m. Saturday, when he was stopped for a traffic violation on Route 422, according to state police. Kittanning-based troopers filed a drug-paraphernalia-possession charge against Kutsch before District Justice Samuel Goldstrohm of Rural Valley, according to a news release. Derry Township, Westmoreland County Theft, forgery reported David Zubalik of Blairsville told state police someone took a wallet, a watch and a checkbook from his vehicle and then wrote five checks on his account. Tubalikfs property disappeared between 2:30 and 10 a.m.

A car driven by Gary Neal of Indiana was disabled it hit a deer on Route 119 at 7:20 p.m. Saturday, state police reported. Neal was not reported to be injured. Burrell Township Ryan Parasida, 18, of Indiana suffered what police called a minor injury in an accident at 8:17 p.m. Friday.

Indiana-based troopers reported the car Parasi- da was driving hit an embankment and overturned on the Route 22 exit ramp to Route 119. A car driven by Cheryl Miller of Blairsville slid on a patch of ice at 8:46 a.m. Saturday and flipped onto its roof about one-quarter mile south of Black Lick on Route 119, according to state police in Indiana. Troopers reported Miller, 46, suffered a minor in- Jury. No other medical information was released.

White Township A car owned by Kyle Cobaugh of Indiana was damaged by a hit- and-run vehicle between I and 3 p.m. Thursday while it was parked on Franklin Circle, state police reported. Pine Township A truck driven by Kenneth Mumau III of Glen Campbell traveled into a ditch along Route 22 near the Cambria County line at 9:11 p.m. Nov. 8, state police reported.

According to a news release issued this morning, Mumau suffered a minor injury. Derry Township, Westmoreland County Michael Reott of Biairsville escaped injury at 8:17 p.m. Friday when his car hit an embankment and rolled over on Route 217 near Hillside, state police reported. Reott told troopers at Greensburg that he swerved to avoid a deer on the road.
