It's quite an honor. 99 The Rev. Peter Plourde St. Paul's Catholic Church priest 1 i iiinil nww mni ilmi limn- i By LEIGH ANN MILLER Tribune Correspondent CARROLLWOOD The Rev.

Peter Plourde, a priest at St. Paul's Catholic Church, will be going to Rome at the end of the month to pursue his Bible studies so that one day he may teach in a university. The trip is being paid for by the Diocese of St. Petersburg. In exchange, Plourde, a 1975 graduate of Leto High School, said the diocese expects him to return in two years to teach in the area.

"It's very exciting." said Plourde, 30. "You are appointed by church superiors to go to Casa Santa Maria in Rome, you don't just go. It's quite an honor." Casa Santa Maria is a division of the North American College in Rome. Plourde will be staying there while trying to obtain his license of Sacred Scripture. A license of Sacred Scripture is basically a license to teach the Catholic faith.

Plourde can teach now, but the license allows him to teach on a university level. It is comparable to a doctorate degree one would receive at a state university. In preparation for his trip to Rome, Plourde has been studying "wanted to be an elephant," but after his grandmother explained to him that that would be quite impossible, he told her he "wanted to be a priest," Plourde said. "The magical aspect of it (priesthood)" appealed to him, Plourde said. He wanted to be able to baptize children and marry couples.

Plourde's father, a military career man, would have liked to see his son attend West Point, which offered him Plourde a scholarship. But Plourde declined. "My father told me they needed priests in the military, but that wasn't what I wanted to do. I think he's happy with my decision now. I believe he respects me for it," Plourde said.

When his mother learned of his decision to become a priest she "was thrilled. As long as that was what I really wanted," she would give him support Plourde said. One of Plourde's brothers is also a priest. Plourde's grandmother liked the idea, too. Plourde believed that his grandmother was "God's way of touching him.

She's gone now, but she was a very special woman." here. He attended St. John Vianney College Seminary in Miami and St. Vincent de Paul regional seminary in Boynton Beach. He was ordained in 1983, and has worked in several churches throughout Florida including St.

Paul's this summer. Other churches include St. Martha's in Sarasota and Christ The King in the Interbay area of Tampa. Plourde, who has eight brothers and sisters, said the decision to become a priest was reached at a very early age 4. It was his grandmother who showed Plourde the way.

He recalls that she once asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. His first response was that he Tribune photograph by MARK PHILLIPS The Rev. He has celebrated Mass and heard confessions, but his main purpose was to learnFrench. Plourde said he needs to study the language because "some scholarly work is done in French." French is just one language Plourde will need while studying in Rome. Plourde, who is well-versed in English, of course, will have to know Italian because all of the classes will be in that language. Plourde has also studied Biblical Greek, Hebrew and Latin. All three of which are needed to study the Scriptures.
