Virginia Tech penetrated within the West Virginia 10-yard line five times in the first half, but managed only a 22-yard field goal by reserve kicker Eric King with two seconds to go in the second quarter to take a 3-0 lead. King was inserted after Paul Engle ended two other Tech scoring opportunities by missing short-range field goal attempts.

Virginia Tech fumbled eight times, losing three, while West Virginia fumbled seven times losing two. West Virginia also suffered three interceptions as neither of the Mountaineers' quarterbacks sophomore Dutch Hoffman or freshman Oliver Luck had any luck moving the Mountaineers' banged over from the two-yard line with 4:39 left in the third quarter to give the slow-starting Gobblers a 9-0 lead. Paced by the running and passing of Casey, starting for the first time in his collegiate career, the Gobblers iced the game with only four seconds left when substitute running back Mike RomagnoU powered his way into the end zone from two yards out. Playing in place of senior David Lamie, who has an injured hand, Casey rushed 20 times for 101 yards and completed seven of 15 passing attempts for 130 yards. Dovel's touchdown capped a 71-yard, seven-play scoring drive which saw Casey run for 30 yards and complete a key 14-yard pass- to tight end Dave Dolphin that set up the touchdown.

He was helped along by some occasional heroics by backs Vince Orange and Worley Taylor and quarterback Scott Burk. As time ran out, the Cavaliers drove from their 30 to a first-down on the Clemson 4 and, on a fourth and 6 play, scored their other touchdown on a pass from freshman quarterback Todd Kirkley to tight end Tim Moon. Brown, who had only 170 yards coming into Saturday's game, stunned Virginia with a 59-yard touchdown run on Clemson's first play from scrimmage. Included in his remaining 18 carries was his second quarter touchdown run of 15 yards. Fuller added 164 yards to help give the Tigers a whopping 550-231 advantage in total offense.

Both his touchdowns came on 1-yard plunges as he ran for 33 yards, and he completed 11 of 20 passes for 131 yards. Six of Fuller's passes went to split end Jerry Butler, who tied a Clemson record by upping his career receptions to 106. Butler's work Cavaliers CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.
