Ukrary Says Two Humorous Books Most Popular Here patnns the Howard Whittemore Memorial Library Were apparently looking for a good lau.ih in 1958 as an antidote to depressing headlines and day- to-day news of world crisis, according to the Librarian Robert Brenrian. Two humorous Van Huron's "Dear Abby," and Jean Kerr's "Please Don't Eat the Daisies," were the mosl fro- 11 requested non-fiction titles at the library last year. There were waiting lists during the year for both books, the librarian Also asked for frequently were "Baa.Baa Black Sheep," by Pap. py Boyington; "Masters of Deceit," by J. Edgar Hoover; "Aku Ak.u.V- by Thor Heyerdahl; "In- sijp Russia Today," by John Gunther; "To Live Again." by Cath' evine Marshall; "The Affluent Society," by John Gal'braith; and "The Arctic Year," by Peter Freuehen.

Leading the library's fiction list was John Voelker's "Anatomy of a Murder," a fascinating analysis of the defense of a man who. had taken the life of another. Close in popularity were Patrick Dennis' "Around the World With Auntie Mame" and Russian author Boris Pasternak's "Doctor Zhivago," which was roundly condemned by the Russians after it was awarded the Nobel prize for literature. Requests were also for Elizabeth G-oudge's "The White Witch," -Howard Spring's "Time and the Hour," Anya Seton's "The Winthrop Woman," Sloan Wilson's "Summer Place," Edna Ferber's "Ice Palace," Frances Parkington Keyes' "Vic- toiine," and John P.
