(AP) It's a record Nebraska worked toward for 27 years, and when it finally came Saturday in a 48-3 victory over winless Kansas State, no one was surprised. But Husker Coach Tom Osborne admitted a lot of pride has gone into Nebraska's NCAA Division I-A record of 27 consecutive winning seasons. "When you have this kind of tradition, it leads to a certain kind of success," Osborne said.

The victory raised the fifth-ranked Huskers to 7-1, assuring them of a winning campaign and breaking the mark of 26 straight winning years established by Penn State in 1939-64 and matched by Alabama from 1958-83. "We're proud of the record because of the consistency it brings to the program," Osborne said. "We have had good coaches and good players come through this program, which builds up tradition and consistency." Nebraska was steady again Saturday. "All our yards were consistent instead of having a big play," said Tyreese Knox, who ran for four touchdowns. "That helped keep us motivated." Kansas State, 0-7, was coming off last week's 70-24 loss to Oklahoma.

"We have played eight quarters against some quality athletes and we competed hard today and that was what we were really pushing," said Kansas State Coach Stan Parrish. "If our kids hang in there I still think we can win a game or two." Knox scored on runs of 2, 6, 2, and 26 yards as the Huskers scored their consecutive victory over the Wildcats. Nebraska took charge midway in the second quarter and mounted a 34-3 halftime advantage. Knox's fourth touchdown, a 26-yard romp, came with 47 seconds left in the third quarter and closed out the game's scoring. Nebraska's Ken Clark rushed for 225 yards on 20 carries, including 161 in the first half, and became the first Nebraska running back since Mike Rozier in 1983 to rush for more than 200 yards in two consecutive games.

Kansas State's sophomore quarterback Carl Straw moved up to 10th on the Wildcats' season passing chart by throwing for 137 yards. Straw completed 14 off 34 attempts but had two interceptions. Straw, with 1,196 yards passing, needs 24 yards to pass Bill Nossek for ninth. The Wildcats' lone score came on Mark Porter's 61-yard field goal in the first quarter, setting a Kansas State record. Nebraska took a 7-0 lead with 11:03 I 'i' Getting shot off left in the first quarter on Clark's 32-yard touchdown run which capped an 11-play, 80-yard drive.

Porter then made it 7-3 by breaking the record of 58 yards set by Bill Sinovic in 1976 against Brigham Young. Porter's wind-aided boot was only one yard shy of the Big Eight record. The Cornhuskers made it 14-3 in the first quarter on a 80-yard, 11-play scoring drive which Knox climaxed with a two-yard run with 4:46 remaining in the period. Nebraska made it 17-3 with 14:03 left in the second quarter on Gregg Barrios' 36-yard field goal. Kansas State had driven to the Nebraska 27, but Reggie Cooper intercepted Straw's pass at the 1-yard line to set up the Huskers' third scoring drive.

Nebraska made it 24-3 with 9: 19 left in the first half when quarterback Steve Taylor combined with Dana Brinson on a 52-yard scoring pass play. It was Taylor's ninth scoring pass this year, and the longest touchdown pass for the Huskers this season. Barrios' 37-yard field goal made it 27-3 with 4 28 remaining. Following a Straw fumble recovered by Nebraska at Kansas State's 26, the Huskers drove 26 yards in five plays to close out the first half scoring. Nebraska led 34-3 at halftime after Knox's six-yard touchdown run.

"Those two goals so close late in the second period broke our back," said Ferguson. "We lost to two pretty good teams on the road trip, but getting four goals down both nights is too big a hill to climb. "The trip was a good measuring stick, though. For the second straight night, the Sioux City Musketeers spotted an opponent four goals before getting into the swing of a United States Hockey League contest.

And for the second straight night, the big early deficit proved costly to Coach Bob Ferguson's skaters. Saturday, a veteran Madison Capitols team stormed to a 4-0 lead in the first period, then cruised home to an 8-4 victory. Friday night, in another 8-4 loss at Rochester, the Musketeers surrendered four goals before scoring. The loss left the Musketeers with a 1-4-1 record. Sioux City returns to action next Friday night at Waterloo, then hosts Des Moines at City Auditorium the following night.

Madison, which has lost only to Thunder Bay in six outings, features 13 returning players from last season, including high scorers Jeff Marshall and Rob Granato. Granato is the younger brother of Tony Granato, a former Madison player who played on the United States Olympic team and now skates for the New York Rangers of the NHL. Jason Ledford picked up three goals for a hat trick to spark Madison. Pat Rafferty added two goals for the Caps and Marshall also put in a goal. Rafferty and Page Klostreich, added recently to the Musketeer roster, were teammates last year at Waterloo.

Klostreich scored a goal at 8:44 of the second period Saturday night to help the Musketeers rally to within 4-2. Sean Marsan scored at 5:48 of the "Ron Heaton and I are going to get together this summer and co-author a book on high school defense," joked Jerry Miller after a game which produced 13 touchdowns, eight by the Patriots. Lincoln garnered all six of its first-half scores with a relentless ground game. Then, just to make certain the Wolverines didn't come too close, quarterback Lance Fischer gave his team two more touchdowns with fourth-quarter passes. The Patriots rolled up 69 rushing attempts for 367 yards, divided among no fewer than 11 ball carriers.

Taylor, a track star who seemingly held the key to Lincoln's season, sustained a fractured hand in the season's second game and was feared lost for the remainder of the year. Saturday, making his first start since the injury, Taylor carried 16 times for 130 yards and one touchdown. Fullback Doug Reid added 105 yards in 12 trips for the winners and SFL West 23 21-63 303 22-42-3 7-53 2-1 First downs 25 Rushes-yards 69-367 Passing yards 98 Passes 3-4-0 Punts Penalties-yards 3-30 Fumbles-lost 4-4 crossed the goal line three times. Lincoln leveled its record at 4-4 overall and finished SIC action with a 2-4 mark. West isn't likely to salvage a victory from this season, wrapping up its schedule Thursday night in the DakotaDome with a rematch against undefeated Sioux Falls O'Gorman, a non-conference affair.

Nonetheless, the records of Henningfeld and Bursick left something to celebrate, certainly. Henningfeld's 95 completions and 218 attempts, more than 36 a game, broke records set by another West quarterback, Mike Calvert, who completed 90 of 167 throws in 1976. The 1,260 passing yards surpassed the standard set in 1985 by East's Greg Adams, who needed only 104 attempts to complete 64 passes for 1,226 yards. Bursick's totals knocked out a pair of records by former Sioux Falls Lincoln star Dick Hylland, whose 29 receptions and 503 receiving yards had stood since 1976. Henningfeld's big SIC finale also saw Chad Stroman make five catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns.

Lincoln's Fischer launched only four passes, but completed three of them for 98 yards, including two throws to Jason Markley, who set up a touchdown on a 63-yard play and INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS RUSHING: Lincoln Taylor 16-130, Reid 12-105, Squillace 10-56, Leach 6-19, Burke 8-16, Gohl 5.15,. Michigan hammers Indiana, 31-6 Purdue scores in first period from page D1 By Associated Press Leroy Hoard had two 54-yard touchdown runs and another of two yards in leading Michigan to a 31-6 homecoming victory over Indiana in their Big Ten showdown Saturday. The victory left the 20th-ranked Wolverines in first place in the Big Ten with a 3-0-1 conference record and 4-2-1 overall. Previously unbeaten Indiana, ranked No.

14, fell to 3-1-0 in the Big Ten, 5-1-1 overall. Hoard, a fullback who had gained only 173 yards on 45 carries all season, rushed for 128 yards on seven carries against the Hoosiers, including a 54-yard scoring rumble on the game's fourth play from scrimmage. The Wolverines, who led only 7-6 at halftime, scored on their first three possessions of the second half while limiting the Hoosiers to three snaps and a punt on each of their first four possessions of the third quarter. The Wolverines, during the pivotal third quarter, got a 25-yard field goal by Mike Gillette, scored on an electrifying 46-yard pass from split end Greg McMurtry to flanker Chris Calloway and a 2-yard run by Hoard to take a 24-6 lead. Indiana's scoring came on field goals of 53 and 45 yards by Pete Jeff George to Shawn Wax following an MSU fumble.

George then passed the Illini into position for a 1-yard TD plunge by Howard Griffith later in the first quarter. But, the Spartans scored the next four touchdowns and the MSU defense dominated the Illini until a last-minute, 1-yard scoring dive by running back Keith Jones. Northwestern 35, Wisconsin 14 Byron Sanders gained 181 yards rushing, including racing 65 yards for a touchdown, in leading Northwestern to a 35-14 victory over winless Wisconsin. Sanders' touchdown run came on the next Wildcats' series after Greg Bradshaw hit Pat New with a 37-yard touchdown pass to break open what had been a tight football game. Northwestern added another touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 1- yard keeper by Bradshaw.

The victory was Northwestern's first of the season and gave the Wildcats a 1-5-1 record overall and 1- 2- 1 in the Big Ten. The Badgers dropped to 0-4 in the conference and 0-7 overall. Sanders, whose brother Barry Sanders of Oklahoma State leads the nation in rushing, carried 32 times as the Wildcats controlled the clock with a strong running game. Ohio St. 13, Minnesota 6 Safety David Brown keyed a last-minute goal-line stand, preserving Ohio State's first Big Ten victory of the season, 13-6 over Minnesota.

Carlos Snow scored on a 27-yard run and Greg Frey passed for 199 yards to help set up two Pat O'Mor-row field goals for Ohio State, 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference, which hasn't lost five games in a season since 1966. Minnesota, 2-4-1 and 0-3-1, is off to its worst start since 1983, when the Gophers finished 1-10. Facing a second-and-6 on Ohio State's 14, Gophers quarterback Scott Schaffner took off on a bootleg run. Brown tackled him about 6 inches from the end zone with 2 33 to play. On first-and-goal, Darrell Thompson was stopped by Orlondo Craig and John Sullivan.

On second down, Schaffner lost about 2" 2 feet when he was stacked up by Srecko Zizakovic. With 1:07 left and the ball at the 1, Schaffner sprinted left and was sacked by Brown for a 10-yard loss. Schaf-fner's fourth-down pass into the end zone fell incomplete, touching off an Ohio State celebration. The Buckeyes had allowed 103 points in their three Big Ten losses. Dig Ten roundup Stoyanovich.

It was Michigan's 22nd consecutive homecoming victory. Michigan State 28, Illinois 21 Quarterback Bobby McAllister fired a pair of touchdown passes and tailback Blake Ezor ran for two others as Michigan State rallied to beat Illinois 28-21. McAllister hit Bernard Wilson with a 16-yard TD pass, then fired a 63-yard bomb to Andre Rison as the Spartans took the lead from Illinois in the third quarter and gave up just 31 yards. Ezor, who exploded through the II-lini defense for 113 yards in the game, scored on a 4-yard run in the second quarter and a 6-yard dash in the fourth quarter. The Spartans gave up 14 points to Illinois in the first quarter, then stymied the Illini offense for nearly three quarters.

The victory improved Michigan State's record to 2-4-1, including a 2-1-1 mark in the Big Ten. Illinois dropped to 4-3, with a 3-1 record in the conference. The Illini scored early on a 4-yard touchdown pass from quarterback zone and stretched his right hand back to pull the ball toward his body for the touchdown on third down. The score, which gave Iowa a 17-7 lead with 1:34 remaining in the third quarter, capped a 69-yard, nine-play drive that included three first-down conversions on third down and one on fourth. Purdue, which scored its only touchdown on a nine-yard pass from Fox to Schramayr with 15 seconds left in the first period, was stopped on the 2 early in the third quarter when a fourth-down pass from Fox fell incomplete.

The Hawkeyes moved 73 yards in 12 plays to score on the game's first offensive series on an eight-yard run by David Hudson and had Jeff Skillett's 22-yard field goal give them the lead for good 10-7 in the second period. following a 30-yard punt and a 14-yard return by Marc Foster that gave the Boilermakers the ball on Iowa's 24. Stewart had his big carry two plays after the Hawkeyes halted a Purdue drive by recovering a fumble on Iowa's 20-yard line. Purdue had used its two longest runs of the season, a 28-yarder by Ray Graham and a 21-yarder by Ernie Schramayr, to bring the ball to the 6 before a Fox pitch to Graham was mishandled. Four plays after the fumble recovery, Bass scored to give Iowa a 24-7 advantage.

In the third quarter, Harberts was closely guarded as he ran into the end ifci ii in fcgjteiii linfciiu.
