PAGE SIX BLYTEEVILLE (ARK,)' '~ AioN&AY, 'APRIL 5, 1937 Many Floweiing Varieties Flourish iu Mississippi County Family Crowds Presidential Schedule Many kinds of perennial flowering plants, nourish In Mississippi county and will be used In planting home grounds this spring, says Miss Cora Lee Coleman, home demonstration agent. Many of the hai'dy northern type- perennials, the tender stem perennials, or the drouth resisting flowers of the .plains will thrive here. Columthie, vlolels, Iris, ferns end many others can be transplanted from the woodlands to the yard. In • transplanting peren-i nlsts from the woodlands, they] must be given the best of care, accoidtng to Miss Colcman. Spring transplanting will prove successful If care Is taken In transplanting the chimps. The ii£e of native perennials in the yard should follow closely the -natural system. They should be planted In large irregular groups where they will more or less grow under the same conditions as in woods and fields, and they may be intermingled with the cultivated perennials. The moisture loving types such as iris, verslcolor, should be . planted • where nn abundant supply of moisture Is available. Frequently the dmin from the basement will make a suitable place for planting the moisture loving perennials. Many cultivated perennials may be pin chased as plants or grown from seed. Among the more com- inort ones are Iris, peonies, chrys- antliemums,- phlox, purple cone flower, daisies, columbine, dlan- thus, liolljhocljs, and delphinium. If grown from the seed, the perennials as n rule do not bloom the first year. If plar.'s are purchased' Instead of seed, blooms may : be secured tlio first year. The 'til! growing perennials should be planted to. the rear of the per- .ennlal border and the low growing ones In front. Perennials do best when plant ' food is supplied in abundance The- soil should be Ihoroughlj spaded. If possible, well rottec barn bamire should be .worked Into the soil An application o complete faiUHrer- such as a 412-4—4 pci cent nitrogen, 12 per cent phosphoric acid, and 4 pei cent pbtash^-should • be bi'Oadcasi nt the rate of 4 pounds to 100 square feet. The fertilizer shouli be thoroughly worked Into th soil prior to planting. Columbines" and German Iri do best Vfhch lime is added-t the soil. A small handful of air- slacked lime placed around the plant is sufficient lo supply the requirements. / The County: Council of Home Demonstration Clubs each year sponsors . an exchange of flowers, shiubs, seed nnd bulbs. Reports on these will be made during VBelter. Homes Week." J Dawson Missing Steel Bridge Found in Junkyard VANDALIA, 111. (UP)—The missing Fayette County steel bridge ihat once spanned the Kaskaskla River has been found. Sheriff c. P. Chcslilcr said he found the bridge In a junkyard. The junkman said he had bought the bridge from;a fanner living nearby, dismantled it and transported it to his Jimk yard. Sleet, snow and wind-whipped spray from Lake Michigan transformed these. trees along Chicago's north shore Into glittering clusters of stalactites as winter took another "lost fling" at the midwest: The bllzzanl'N aftermath also gave the two young-women in the picture a belated chance for icy ' sightseeing.
