February 12. 2000 Hot shooting lifts Gross past Cards Abraham Lincoln has substate Tom Jankowski tossed in 14 points to lead all scorers as Gross (9-10) snapped South Sioux City's modest two-game winning streak. Teammate Nick Staroski drilled a pair of three-point shots on his way to 10 points.

South Sioux City held leads of 8-7 at the end of the first quarter and 23-22 at halftime. Gross, however, outscored the Cardinals 13-8 in the third quarter and never lost its grip on the lead. Nate Phipps drilled four three-pointers to pace South Sioux City with 12 points. Ryan Patrick grabbed six rebounds and Nick Conrad pulled down five missed shots to help the hosts finish with a 28-20 advantage SOUTH SIOUX CITY Omaha Gross shot 63 percent from the field in a 50-39 River Cities Conference basketball win over South Sioux City here Friday night. The visitors canned 20 of 32 field goal attempts in the game, while South Sioux City went 13-for-43 (30.2 percent) from the floor.

"That shouldn't happen in your own gym," said South Sioux Coach Mark Casey. "They were a little quicker than we were at every spot. "A lot of credit goes to them for us not shooting well, but there's still no excuse for it. It's a good wake-up call for us." S.R Lincoln socks Stars, 67-46 on the boards. Joel Youngberg tallied a team-high 16 points as the Patriots, ranked second among South Dakota large schools, hiked their record to 12-2. The 6-foot-7 junior hit five shots from the field and went 6-for-6 at the charity stripe. Outside scoring threats Dan Kap-pes and Bryan Voss each tossed in 1 1 points for Lincoln.

Voss buried a trio of three-pointers and Kappes splashed two shots from behind the arc. top seed in from page B1 that game. The Lynx of Coach Bruce Chubick had no such problems Friday night, shooting nearly 50 percent (23-for-47) against-the Crusaders. Heelan, though, kept the game close for three quarters with a persistent defensive effort against the taller Lynx. Rau connected on 7 of 9 attempts from the floor, including three crucial second-chance baskets in the second half.

John Turek, a 6-foot-8 junior, pulled down seven missed shots to help Abe Lincoln build a 31-21 rebounding advantage. "We worked very hard on our inside-out game," said Chubick, who played college basketball at Briar Cliff. "If people don't double team us down low, our big guys can get the job done. Heelan's zone defense was tough but we're getting better at kicking the ball back out." Heelan's Chris Benson tallied all 12 of his points in the first half but just three other players scored for the Crusaders, who have been held to fewer than 40 points in four of their last six contests. Nate LaFleur tallied nine second-half points for Heelan (7-8), while Brett Moody and Joe Bisenius each finished with six.

"We're just struggling so hard offensively right now," said Crusader Coach Doug. Moody. "It's very frustrating. "I think a lot of that had to do with AL tonight but our inexperience of not playing a lot of basketball is really starting to show. For our program to get back to the level we want it to, the kids have to decide to play more basketball." Gil Ridenour threw in eight of his 12 points in the fourth quarter to help Abraham Lincoln pull away.

The Lynx roared to a 10-0 lead while shutting Heelan out for the first four minutes of the game. The hosts scrambled back into contention by scoring 10 of the next 13 points and whittled Abe Lincoln's lead to 15-12 at the end of the opening quarter. "We kind of forgot our mission at times," said Chubick. "We had to talk to them at halftime." The difference remained less than 10 points until the third quarter, when Aaron Heithoff bombed in one of his three three-point baskets to give the guests a 32-22 edge. Moody canned a three-pointer for Heelan with 20 seconds left in the period, reducing the difference to seven points, but Abraham Lincoln reserve Ronnie Alexander hit a wild shot at the buzzer to make it 38-29 going into the fourth quarter.

After a Bisenius free throw made it an eight-point game with 6:20 to play, Abraham Lincoln went on a 10-0 run as Heelan went scoreless for nearly three minutes. Heelan plays at Carroll Kuemper tonight with the varsity tipoff slated for 7:30. Abraham Lincoln has secured the No. I seed in the Class 4A substate that also includes Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson and the four Sioux City schools. The substate championship contest, however, will be played in Sioux City, a fact that has Chubick miffed.

"What's the advantage of having the top seed if the substate final is (in Sioux City)?" he asked. "Our kids have worked just as hard as anybody. "I have a hard time understanding how one team gets a hometown advantage instead of having the game at a neutral site. I don't like it, but our kids will be ready to play anytime, anywhere." Nebraska is coming off a 70-58 loss at Colorado and is 1-8 away from home.

Coach Danny Nee said his team "hasn't done anything right" on the road all season. In all four of the Cornhuskers' Big 12 road losses, they've fallen behind by at least 14 points in the first half and have never led in the second half. They trailed by 28 at Kansas State, 25 at Kansas, 38 at Texas and 20 at Colorado. "We've talked and tried to get ready to play," said Nee, whose team has lost three of its last four. "But I don't think we've been competitive in a road game yet" Iowa State won at Nebraska 66-65 on Jan.

12, its first conference road game of the season. The Cyclones (20-3, 8-1) have won two more league games since then, the latest a 72-62 victory over Missouri on Wednesday night. "I think it was a big turning point in our season," guard Kantrail Hor-ton said of the game at Nebraska. "It gave us confidence and let everybody know we can go on the road and win." Iowa State is 15-0 at home and even Eustachy admits the crowd noise at Hilton is a huge advantage for his team. But he also remembers the Kansas State The Cyclones beat Kansas State 72-61 in Manhattan, then struggled against the Wildcats for long stretches at home before finally putting them away in an 82-67 victory.

"That would be a challenge, to improve on that," Eustachy said, adding he feels Nebraska is more talented than Kansas State. "That's why we use the word dangerous," he said. "It's a team you can't play poorly and beat." Nebraska has gotten a lift from Matt Davison, who joined the team in January after playing wide receiver for the football team. Davison has played in seven games and started two. Though he averages only 1.7 points and 1.1 rebounds, he has added an element of toughness.

Illinois has climbed back into contention from page B1 Krupalija and now, the 6-9 Griffin into the fray. Griffin returned to action in the II-lini's 75-59 victory over Michigan on Thursday night, just 16 days after undergoing arthroscopic surgery. He did not play in Illinois' 69-58 victory at Iowa on Jan. 26 and the Illini still outrebounded the Hawkeyes 45-29. "They dominated us on the boards the last game and now you throw in a guy who can definitely rebound, is a great presence at 6-9 and can score inside," Alford said.

"There are certain teams that have an inside presence in scoring and Illinois definitely has that. "Not only their inside players, but their guards post up and they really attack the paint. That's a big concern for us. We didn't make them make jump shots the last game. We have to do that.

The key to this game will be to eliminate their close to the basket scoring." In that first game, Illinois finished with an 18-2 run after Iowa had taken a 56-51 lead. Alford said his team is playing much better now at the end of games. "Just looking at Wisconsin, Kansas and Ohio State, three games that were very tight we were able to pull out in the last five minutes," Alford said. "We're not going to be able to do that all the time, but I think our kids learned from that experience." Illinois (14-7, 6-4) has won five of its last six to get back within striking distance of the Big Ten leaders. The Illini trail Indiana and Purdue by just one game and are only iVi games behind first-place Ohio State and Michigan State.

"I don't know if we're back in the race when you've still got four teams in front of you," Illinois Coach Lon Kruger said. "Maybe a better way to put it is we're back in position to get back in the race." Other than an ugly 26-point loss at home to Purdue, Iowa has played well the last couple of weeks. The Hawkeyes won at Wisconsin and beat then-No. 15 Kansas before knocking off Ohio State. "Iowa has shown they can beat anyone, especially when they shoot well," Kruger said.

"I expect them to come in and play awfully well. We'll have to come in and be at our best to beat Iowa." The game is the second of three straight Iowa is playing on the road, the second such stretch the Hawkeyes have faced this season in league play. The first time, they lost all three games to Minnesota, Indiana and Penn State. Alford said winning the first game of the three should help. Sioux Falls Lincoln stops North sophomores, 63-45 Steve Schermerhorn finished as North's lone double-figure scorer with 10 points.

The Patriots held North leading scorer Michael Kalin to single digits for the first time in seven games. The 6-foot-1 junior, averaging 18.7 points a game, finished with nine in the setback. Lincoln outscored the Stars in every quarter, leading 1 1-6 at the end of the first period, 33-18 at halftime and 45-28 after three stanzas. The Patriots finished the game by hitting five of their nine three-point baskets in the fourth quarter. North (9-5) returns to action to 100th career victory by pinning Jeremy Gabel in 5:42.
