Clair River last month environmentalists expressed alarm over the danger of an ecologically-devastating oil spill. According to Ralph W. Purdy, executive secretary of the Michigan Water Resources Commission, many overlooked a second pollution danger: that most commercial vessels and virtually all small pleasure craft dump untreated sewage directly into the water. "At one time, shortly after the ship collison," Purdy said, "there were 55 vessels concentrated in lower Lake Huron and the upper St. Clair River.

"Estimating an average 30 crew members to a ship, sewage discharged would compare to that of a community of 1,500 or more population," he said. "There are a half dozen water supply intakes hi the river itself, including some for domestic use," Purdy explained. A state antipollution laxv requiring the installation of sewage holding can be emptied into shore commercial vessels was passed to combat the problem. However, shippers have challenged the state's jurisdiction, maintaining that, since much of their business is interstate, they are within the federal realm. The result, said Purdy, is a federal restraining order against the law, in effect until the U.S.

Don Better, 225 pound right hander from Union Lake, and David Paterson of Birmingham, middleweight southpaw, both hurled 10-skip stones to tie for a year's supply of Ryba's Mackinac Island Fudge and the Little David Trophy. Cmdr. E. M. Tellefson, retired international stone skipping champion (17 in 1932), solved the knotty problem of who would take home the 75-pound Little David rock by cleaving it with a sledge and giving each contestant 37V2 pounds.

Cmdr. Tellefson, chief judge of the tournament, said "it was the sportiest course ever, and the choppy waves at Silver Birches Beaches male it a great event." He said the high waves held the score down. Five contestants were tied for first place at 2:30 p.m. after four and a half hours of play, with high scores of only eight. Injured In One-Car Crash ST.

IGNACE Franklin Moses, 32, of St. Ignace was treated at the Mackinac Straits Hospital for injuries he sustained in a one-car accident Saturday at 10:25 a.m. According to the State Police report. Moses was making a left turn from Ellsworth St. onto Marrjuette St.

His speed was too fast, and he hit a mailbox on the right side of Marquette St. and then crossed over to the left side hitting an electric utility pole. He suffered head lacerations police said. Then Young Better played the shallow troughs between the waves, with a close-to shore ten skip; followed five minutes later by Paterson's similar ten-skip, the tournament was over. Scores from other tournaments sanctioned by the Mackinac Island Stone Skipping and Geplunking club, were not yet available.
