5. (A.P.) Henry Wallace said In a cam paign speech today that farmers had 'learned too much to be taken in" by Republican arguments that they had made more money during G. O. P. administrations than they had during the past seven Democratic years.

In terms of purchasing power," said the Democratic candidate for vice president, "the fanners have fared much better in the last seven years of this Democratic administra tion than they did In the previous seven years. In Illinois, this increase Is 18 percent, in the nation at large 10 percent." Wallace, who resigned as secretary of agriculture to conduct his cam paign, spoke at an outdoor meeting here on the third day of. an auto mobile trip through downstate Illinois agricultural districts. "The Democratic programs," he said, "were built precisely to meet the loss of foreign markets brought about in large part by the dictators of Europe and the Republican high tariffs." Rev. Bankhead left by train today for Birmingham to take charge of the southeastern Democratic campaign and "to raise as much money as possible for the party." He first called at the White House for a brief chat with President Roosevelt.

Bankhead planned to open a headquarters at Birmingham Monday. He said his principal work would be to raise funds for the national committee to use in doubtful states. He said virtually no money would be needed for the southeastern campaign. "In the doubtful states." he asserted, "the people with bank balances to spare are not active supporters of the Democratic administration. The Republicans can get all they need.

I am convinced that we must get our money from the masses of the people." Bankhead said he expected to operate through the regular state and local committees in both the money and vote drives rather than set up any independent campaign organization. He said he would work principally through the mails and would have only a small force at Birmingham. YEGGS WELCOME IN CITY HALL MOBILE, Ala. (U.P.)
