April 19, a new "light-hearted, realistic drama" called "The Best Times" will move into the 8 p.m. time slot, sending "Knight Rider" back to its regular slot on April 21. Both "Half-Nelson" and "The Best Times" are getting six-week runs and should be considered candidates for next fall's network schedule, according to Brandon Tartikoff, NBC Entertainment president. Tartikoff also said that "Code Name: Foxfire" will be back later this season. "The Best Times" supposedly will trace the "struggles and triumphs of high school students and teachers in a Southern California beach community." Successive episodes, NBC assures, will deal with such subjects as drugs, premarital sex, unrequited love and "simply learning how to get along." ABC News blues Sources at ABC News say there is much worry about the pending merger between ABC and Capital Cities Communications Inc.

GCC spokesman Victor Gattuso said the theater should be open by May 24. For those unfamiliar with 70mm film presentation, the print projected is twice the size of the regular-format (35mm) film and generally yields a much bigger and sharper image, with greatly improved sound quality. Hollywood produces a number of 70mm films each year, with most of them being of the large-scale science fiction, action or epic-historical variety. Adding to our hopes for much TheQ Westenberger kjfe as a female cop is no easy beat. The work is grueling; the risks are staggering; the physical and emotional demands are relentless.

Yet women are more than cutting it in the rough and tumble world of crime, and have shown that it's possible to be gentle and compassion ate and still be a good cop. But the idea of women cops is stil unsettling to many including other women. On April 12, the University theater has booked "Blood Simple," the hard-boiled and violent melodrama that has been described as a cross between James M.

Cain and Alfred Hitchcock. The film was made by brothers Joel and Ethan Coen and already has become a cult item. Also scheduled for the University, on April 26, is the "hot" American independent movie, "Stranger Than Paradise," according to GCC film buyer Jim Smith. "Stranger Than Paradise," directed by Hungarian immigrant Jim Jarmusch, is about three Hungarian immigrants in New York who take an off-beat journey to Florida in a beat-up car. The black-and-white oddity, filled with fade-outs and sardonic humor, has caused a small sensation in New York, Los Angeles and other cities.

GCC's Smith says that the management at the University Square has had requests for "Blood Simple" and "Stranger." "And if there's anywhere (in Tampa) where these films are gonna play, I think it's out by the University (of South Florida)," Smith says. More screens for Tampa The Tampa Bay area, which has long suffered from its lack of superior 70mm movie theaters, seems to have the larger-format, better-image-and-sound theaters growing up everywhere these days. We announced several weeks ago that the local, multi-screen-building plans of the American Multi-Cinema and United Artists theater chains include 70mm theaters for the Brandon and Pinellas Park areas, respectively. Now, the General Cinema Corp. has announced plans to include a ment.

"THX" is a process, invented Things are looking up for Tampa filmgoers who've lamented the lack of local, first-run foreign and American-independent movies. The Plitt Theatres chain starts on April 5 an eight-week experiment in reserving one of the screens in its Carrollwood-based Main Street 6 cinema for "art" movies. The chain is working with freelance movie programmer Dick Morris, who has had some success in booking 16mm and 35mm alternative films in (his hometown of) Sara-sota and other Florida cities in the last year. It was Morris who brought "Liquid Sky" and "The Fourth Man" to Tampa in recent months, as well as importing the currently held-over Talking Heads concert film, "Stop Making Sense," at the Main Street. On April 5, as part of this new effort, Main Street will start a two-week run of its first foreign film in the planned two-month wave of alternative titles, Morris says.

The first fiim is "Les Comperes," a freewheeling comedy starring Gerard Depardieu. The film, which Morris also has been sponsoring in a successful, 35mm run in Sarasota, will be replaced by a two-week run of "Choose Me," on April 19 and a double-week stay of "A Sunday in the Country." "Choose Me," a comic romance by talented American director Alan Rudolph to L.A."), stars Keith Carradine, Genevieve Bujold and Lesley-Ann Warren. "A Sunday in the Country" is French director Bertrand Tavernier's de warm, turn-of-the-century slice of an elderly, country painter's life. Morris says if any of the films do well they may be held over at Main Street. "Whatever the top foreign or independent movie is for the week, by George Lucas' company in Cali fornia, which heightens aural reality by computer-controlled, strategi cally located speakers.

GCC currently owns and oper we'll try to get it," Morris says. "Through Memorial Day (May 27), there will be an international movie on that screen." Plitt district manager Bob Jones says one reason his chain is trying "different" movies at Main Street is the proliferation of first-run screens in the Carrollwood area, along North Dale Mabry Highway. "General Cinema is opening a six-plex down the street (see related item below). That means (with the Main Street and United Artists' nearby eight-screen Movies at Mission Bell), there'll be 20 screens within a three-mile radius. There's just not enough first-run fare to fill 20 screens," Jones adds.

"So we're looking at some alternatives. "We're trying to keep all of our screens first-run; and if it means showing 'art' movies, so be it." Jones says the Carrollwood strip is "a good area to try this kind of product. It's a kind of affluent, Yuppie area. And I think those people will support these kinds of movies. Also," Jones adds, "we'll be able to draw from the University (of South Florida), since it's only five or six miles away.

"If this (experiment) is successful, I could see it being done on a continuing basis for three-quarters of the year, or even year-round," Jones says. "We're looking to capture the art market in the area." Meanwhile, General Cinema's University Square theater is planning to show two popular American ates the University Square, Tampa Bay Center, Britton and Eastlake Square cinemas. Also forthcoming is Plitt Thea tres' new six-plex in the University Collection shopping center, Fletcher Avenue and 30th Street, according to SiJi Sunday Buffet Plitt's Bob Jones. Jones said that the theater, which will have Dolby stereo in at least two theaters, "will be wide At Saddlebrook's Elegant Cypress Room screen by most standards" and be comparable to Plitt's Main Street cinemas. District manager Jones said it has not been decided by the movie company yet if a 70mm theater will be included in the University Collec tion location, scheduled for opening 10:30 A.M.
