Telegrom, 23, 1960 'Young Jesse James' Is Story Of The Old West Ray Stricklyn stars as the 1 One Sure Way To Gef Roles In The Movies There re many ways of breif ing into the movies. One almost sure way seems to be, simply, to live In Cleveland, Tennessee at least as long as Elia Kazan is there producing and directing 20th Century Fox's Cinemascope and Luxe color production "Wild River." Of the forty-eight speaking parts In the picture, which opens today at the Tower Theatre, only nine are filled by professional Hollywood-Broadway actors. The re-maining thirty-nine were cast on the spot Kazan was shooting in a real store.

He glanced up and saw two old ladies. "Girls." he smiled, "would you work in our picture?" They will be seen in the film in a hotel lobby, in rocking chairs, listening to a broadcast. an Academy Award nomination with a bravura performance in "Robinson Crusoe" in the course of which he appeared on screen in every one of the film's 90 minutes, 60 of them alone. Hollywood, stunned, said, "Where did he come come?" The answer, as any schoolboy should have known, was Ireland. More to the point and this is what Hollywood really meant he came from the Abbey Theatre and. a few major roles in very good English pictures. He aioni juiA happen to be good Crusoe;" he was good before that.

I And he is good alter max too, as in is Dy by V. ft But he has not been a prolific one. Although he has read "about 300" scripts, he has appeared in only thirteen films. Among them is "The Wild River' which is now playing at the Tower. Between pictures Clift either travels or lives quietly in his New York apartment.

Nevertheless, he has been the subject of countless magazine rrticie and newspai.t oilumns based, for' the most part, on second or third-hand information. Of this Clift said recently: "I am interviewed mostly in California and usually while at work. I don't blame interviewers for thinking that my thoughts are some place else. They are." Told that he often gives the impression of being an unhappy man, Clift said: "I think I'm a happy guy. I enjoy life.

All goes well for awhile, but when some Union wagons and preisoners are captured, Jesse recognizes, among the prisoners, one of the Union soldiers who hung his stepfather.

He guns down the unarmed soldier in cold blood, thus getting his revenge. But this is just a beginning, not an end. Jesse has become a trigger-happy killer. Ray Stricklyn, no stranger to a western setting, having been born and raised In Houston, Texas, quietly but convincingly makes an almost sympathetic outlaw. He gained film prominence as Gary Coopers son in "Ten North Frederick." Willard Parker, veteran Holly wood Western hero and star of TV's "Famed Tales 9f the Texas Rangers" series, plays Cole Younger, a fast draw with a conscience.

It is one ot Parker's finest performances. Also starred in 'Young Jessie James," is Merry Anders, of "How To Marry a Millionaire" fame. She plays the illustrious Belle Starr with gusto and beauty. Robert Dix, son of all-time movie great Richard Dix, gives a sensitive and touching performance as Frank James, the older brother. Though not completely in sympathy with Jessie's violent temperament, a feeling of kinship compels Frank to look after Jessie as best he can.

The fine character actor, Emile Meyer, is cast as the opportunistic Quantrill, a man more interested in gold than glory. English Grads Receive Top Jobs, Salary CHAPEL HILL "A total number of 65 University of North Carolina graduate students of the department of English sought for and received assistance in placement and 25 of these students re ceived placement in North Carolina," according to Kenan Professor of English Author Palmer Hudson. Prof. Hudson is the placement adviser in the UNC English Department. Dr.

Hudson reported on the acti vities of the auxiliary service for the past year, 1959-60. He said that comparison with the previous vear there is a sharp increase in the number of appointees to posi tions in North Carolina. This "may indicate that North Carolina salaries for young teachers are at least competitive with those in the rather wide region which normally employs UNC graduate stu dents." Out of 45 students placed who re ported their positions, 38 of these were college appointees and reported the salaries they Were receiving which amounted to a total of $157,390, or an average of $4915. 'If figures for appointees who did not report salaries were known it is probable that the total earnings of English trainees from the UNC English graduate school would run to well over $200,000 for 1960-61 with a probable higher average than that quoted above, said Pro fessor Hudson. This year there was a greater inquiry for students with the Ph.D.

or near Ph.D. "We had a larger number of qualifying candidates than usual but not nearly enough to meet the demand," commented Professor Hudson in his report. Associate professors are getting higher salaries, assistant professors are getting less, and there is an appreciable increase in 1 n- structors' salaries. The average salary for secondary school teach ers reported by graduate students is "distinctly below that for col lege instructors." The total num ber of requests received for college teachers for 1959-60 was 180. One of Ireland's great gifts to Hollywood, O'Herlihy, made his mark several years ago with a brayura perform' ance in the title role of "Robinson Crusoe," in which he was on-screen for all of the film's 90 minutes, of them alone. The feminine leads in "The Night Fighters" are undertaken by Anne Heywood and Marianne Benet, both lovely, both talented. Anne, a former beauty contest winner, has been seen in such pictures as "Checkpoint," "Doctor at Large" and "The Heart of a Man." Marianne, a young star of the British stage and television, made her film debut in "Shake Hands With the Devil" First Big Role For New Actor Ray Stricklyn, one of Holly wood's finest young actors, has the title role in the battle-filled As sociated Producers. Twentytteth Century-Fox release, "young Jes se a In this Cinema- Scope western, which opens today at the Center Theatre, Stricklyn has his first important starring role. His portrayal of the almost sympathetic, trigger-happy gunman is sensitive and penetrating.

But, as far as Stricklyn is concerned, is his "second" major screen effort. He has been tested for more parts and just missed getting them than any other Hollywood actor. He tested for Gary Cooper's son in "Friendly rersuasion, uie role tnat won acclaim for Anthony Perkins. and again for the part eventually played by John Saxon in "Teach Me How to Cry." Every casting director in Hollywood saw him in a dozen major roles that he lost out on. The same held true of his test for "Peyton Place." Russ Tamblyn got the part he wanted.

When he was asked to test for Gary Cooper's son in "Ten North Frederick," he did so without any great hope of landing the role: he was overjoyed when Producer Charles Brackett and Director Phillip Dunne tapped him for the job. That he had what it takes was vividly borne out when, at the close of his first scene on the Twentieth Century-Fox lot. the entire cast and crew applauded him, a rare tribute to any act or. After a long apprenticeship in New York and in summer stock at the Litchfield Summer Theatre in Connecticut, he garner- nered two roles on Broadway. His performance in one of them earn ed him a Theatre World Award as one of the year's most promising actors.
