THE TAMPA TRIBUNE, Wednesday, June 19, 1985 7-C if First 2 rounds of draft reinforce Florida's low NBA status By MICK ELLIOTT Tribune Sports Writer Tuesday's NBA draft did little to change Florida's image as a basketball wasteland. Very little. With the first two rounds of pro basketball's talent lottery viewed as the only ones offering legitimate prospects, only two players with state ties Eustis" Kenny Green and Clearwater's Mike Brlttain got the early call, and both of them played college ball out of state. Green, a 6-foot-7 forward for Wake Forest, was selected by the Washington Bullets as the 12th pick of the first round, and the University of South Carolina's 7-foot Brittain was taken by the San Antonio Spurs as the fourth pick of the second round. As for in-state college players, South Florida's Charlie Bradley received the first call, going to the Sacramento Kings as the fourth player selected in the third round, the 51st player taken overall.

He was followed In the third round by the Florida Gators' Eugene McDowell, drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks as the 68th selection of the draft. Other players with Florida connections included Florida State guard Dean Shaffer, taken in the fifth round (104 overall) by the Washington Bullets, and Lakeland native George Almones, drafted 130th overall by the New Jersey Nets in the sixth round. Almones, from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, declared hardship and passed up his senior year to make himself available for the draft. FSU's Alton Lee Gipson was the final state player taken, drafted in the seventh and final round by Sacramento. The 6-10, 220-pound center was viewed by some as a possible first-round pick when last season began, but was the 145th player taken in the 162-player draft, reportedly because of a questionable attitude.

The day, however, belonged to Green and Brittain. Less than three percent of players drafted after the second round have managed to stay in the NBA, so the pair will receive some sense of security in their early selection. Green averaged nearly 15 points and seven rebounds a game last year. He can hit the 15-foot jumper, but questionable ballhandling is expected to limit him to a small forward role. Brittain, who led Clearwater High to the state championship in 1981, was described by Spur General Manager Bob Bass as "a project." "But he's a guy we can come In and build around," he said, adding Brittain was the best shot blocker at the Aloha Classic all-star game.

"I couldn't be happier," Brittain said from Columbia, S.C. "When I was back in Clearwater, I never dreamed this could happen. But I've added a lot of strength since those days and that helped me a lot." Last season, in a 10-round draft, 13 Florida players were taken, three of them in the first round. Those three first-round selections Brandon's Jeff Turner, Otis Thorpe of Lake Worth and Tom Sewell of Pensacola were the only ones to make their respective teams, New Jersey, Kansas City (now Sacramento) and Washington. With this year's seven-round draft, only seven Florida players were taken.

Mike Brittain i' 1 i 4 J)k jtll.i Musselman: Draftees to make quick impact .1 J. ''Toll I I i iv "He could be more valuable a player than (Arkansas') Joe Kleine or (SMU's) 7-foot Jon Koncak," Musselman said. Kleine, 6-11, was the sixth pick of the first round by Sacramento. Koncak was the fifth pick of the first round by Atlanta. Mostly, said Musselman, "everything went as projected" early in the draft He said the NBA may have missed a golden business opportunity in letting St.

John's guard Chris Mullin be picked No. 7 by Golden State. Mullin is a pure shooter whose lack of quickness may be a liability in the NBA. "He went a lot higher than projected," Musselman said. "He has a great knowledge of the game.

But what a great gate attraction he'd be for any Eastern team. You don't pass up a player you project as a starter for seven or eight years. Nobody on the West Coast is familiar with Mullin. He would have been more valuable to the NBA in the East." Musselman believes Mullin, 6-6 and 205 pounds, will get plenty of playing time next year at Golden State, but said "he would have been better off with a better club." By RICHARD MUDRY Tribune Sports Writer Thrillers coach Bill Musselman said the quality of play in the National Basketball Association should be higher this winter than ever before. "You'll find a lot of players picked in the first and second rounds who will get a lot of playing time next year," Musselman said after followlnng Tuesday's draft.

"There was more depth, even among those players picked after the first seven. They should get plenty of time, too. There will be more second-round guys make the (NBA) rosters than In past. There were a lot of good underclassmen available." Musselman said the draft held a few surprises from his point of view, some mild and some eye-opening. "The Celtics drafting 20th may have gotten the No.

1 guard In the draft picking 'as low as they did," said Musselman, referring to Boston's selection of Michigan State's 6-foot-2 point guard Sam Vincent. Ed Pickney, a 6-9 forward from Villanova's NCAA championship team, was chosen 1 0th by Phoenix and may have been "underrated" for his potential, Musselman said. NBA From Page 1C Blab was the seventh center taken with the first 17 picks and also the eighth 1984 Olympian. Ewing, Tisdale, Koncak, Kleine and Mullin were on the gold-medal winning U.S. team, Wennington played for Canada, and Schrempf and Blab for West Germany.

Yet another big man, 7-7 Manute Boj of the Sudan and the University of Bridgeport, was the 31st pick, by Washington in the second round. Bol's future is clouded by his 190-pound frame. Four of the six guards picked in the first round were among the last seven choices. Detroit took 6-2 Joe Dumars of McNeese State, Houston grabbed 6-5 Steve Harris of Tulsa, Boston selected 6-2 Sam Vincent of Michigan State, Philadelphia took 6-8 forward Terry Catledge of South Alabama, Milwaukee picked 6-8 forward Jerry Reynolds of LSU, the Los Angeles Lakers selected 6-9 forward A.C Green of Oregon State and Portland finished the first round with 6-3 Terry Porter of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The Knicks, assured of getting the rights to Ewing on May 12 when they won the "Patrick Ewing Lottery," now must turn to the task of signing him, probably to a contract in excess of $1 million a year.

"We are going to enter into negotiations immediately with his representatives," Knicks executive Dave DeBusschere said. "We are looking forward to an amicable and speedy negotiation. We don't anticipate any problems." DeBusschere called it a "landmark day" In the history of the Knicks and said Ewing "will become the foundation for a string of very competitive team for many yean to come." Ewing, cheered wildly by a packed crowd at Madison Square Garden's Felt Forum for the draft, said: "I'm used to hearing boos In New York. It was a little unusual." The three-time Georgetown All-American said he has always been a Philadelphia 76ers fan because of Julius Ervlng, "but now I'm a Knicks fan." Indiana kept secret Its decision on whether to take Tisdale, who was named All-America In all three of Tribune photo by BRITT LAUQHLIN Although he didn't get picked until the third round, Charlie Bradley appears to have a good chance of making It in the NBA. Atlantic 10 scraps 3-point shot Basketball Bradley From Page IC "I guess if you told me some of their players, I'd probably recognize the names." The Kings' most recognizable players happen to play guard, the position the 6-foot-6 Bradley prefers as a professional.

The starters were Reggie Theus (16.4 points per game) and Larry Drew (14.9) with Mike Woodson (17.0) the first man off the bench. Drew was a point guard and Woodson strictly a No. 2 guard. Theus played both spots. Those three represent the second-, third- and fourth-leading scorers on the team.

Eddie Johnson, a 6-8 forward, topped the team with 22.9 points per game. "I recognize those guys and they're very good players, but I'm not going to let that Intimidate me," Bradley said. "I've got to go In and give them a good show to let them see what I can do." The picture in Sacramento is not altogether bleak. The Kings' fourth guard last season, Don Buse, has retired. He also was the team's deslg- a nated three-point shooter.

Bradley's best year at South Florida was the 1982-83 season when the Sun Belt Conference Installed a three-point line. Bradley led the nation in scoring for 11 weeks that year before finishing fourth. "Their coach told me that the' first priority was a center (Sacramento selected center Joe Kleine in the first round) and after that, they wanted a guard to replace Buse," said Kansas City Star reporter Bob Nightengale, who covered the Kings on a daily basis last season. Nightengale said that Buse's retirement might not be the only guard spot that opens up on the team. "They really didn't like having Drew and Theus in the game together," he said.

"When both of them were on the court, one just st6od around. I think they want to trade one of them so that should open another spot" Nightengale said that Kings also have two marginal forwards in Eddie Nealy (2.8 points per game) and Peter Verhoeven (2.3). Kings' Coach Phil Johnson uses his forward interchangeably and thus does not differentiate between a power forward and small forward, according to Nightengale. Tribune Wires HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, N.J. -Atlantic 10 Conference officials have decided to eliminate the three-point field goal and have started talks they hope will lead to a new television contract.

League officials and athletic directors from the member schools met at the Meadowlands complex. Commissioner Charlie Theokas said the league has begun talks with SportsCbannel, a TV cable firm based in New York, for a deal that would mean televising at least one conference game a week. League officials decided Monday to do away with the three-point shot for all games. They failed to decide, however, where the men's basketball tournament will be played next season. A conference spokesman said an announcement should be forthcoming within the next 10 days.
