1 City Journal. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001 OBITUARIES Margaret Farrell Margaret Alder Farrell, 84, of Redondo Beach, formerly of Sioux City died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at her residence following a lengthy illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m.

Saturday at Nativity Catholic Church in Sioux City with the Rev. Jeff Schleisman of Nativity and Immaculate Conception Catholic Parishes officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mrs. Farrell was born Dec. 29, 1916, in Yankton, S.D., the daughter of John and Borghild (Elkern) Alder. She graduated from Yankton High School in 1933, South Dakota Southern Normal School in Springfield, S.D. in 1935 and Morningside College in Sioux City, receiving her BA degree in 1966.

She married Eugene C. Farrell on Feb. 10, 1943, in Vinita, Okla. He died in Aug. 1993 in Sun Lakes, Ariz.

She lived in South Sioux City from 1946-1950, Sioux City from 1950-1985, Sun Lakes from 1985-2001 and currently resided in Redondo Beach. She was a teacher with the Sioux City Community School District at Hobson and Sunnyside Elementary Schools teaching first grade. She had previously taught in Ravinnia, Hudson and Mission Hill, S.D., and Ida Grove, Iowa from 1935-1943. She was a member of Immaculate Conception and Nativity Catholic churches from 1950 to 1985. She was a former AAUW Roundtable and a former board member of Norwest Bank.

Survivors include three daughters and their husbands, Kathleen and Lance Gorze of Redondo Beach, Mary and William Knott of Arvada, and Jean and Donald Kvam of Sioux City; five grandchildren, Dr. Jill Gorze, Andrew and Sarah Knott and Jonathan and Emily Kvam. She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Elizabeth Farrell Kvam. Pallbearers will be Larry Hendricks, Bill Hall. Duane Mahrt, Kyle Peterson, George Mielenz, Ernie Weiland, Tom Peterson and Andrew Knott.

Honorary pallbearer will be Henry Anderson. Memorials may be directed to the Local Friends of the Library in your hometown. Marilyn Jean Brown Marilyn Jean Brown, 72, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at a Sioux City retirement home following a lengthy illness. Services will be 10 a.m Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with the Rev.

Leo Kostizen, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8:30 p.m. today, with family present 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and a prayer service at 8 p.m.

at the funeral home. Mrs. Brown was born July 17, 1929, in Sioux City, the daughter of Emil J. and Clara (Wissing) Peterson. She attended Sioux City schools and graduated from Central High School.

She married Edward F. Brown on April 27, 1962, in Sioux City. He died Oct. 20, 1994, in Sioux City. She had lived in Sioux City most of her live.

She enjoyed wintering in Texas. She was a stay-at-home mom and was active in Brownies and Girl Scouts. She taught Sunday School at St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the Salvation Army. She was the Home League Secretary received for the Salvation Army.

She the Certificate of Faithful Service Award from the Salvation Army League of Mercy. Survivors include two daughters, Julie A. Morley and her husband, Pat, of Sioux City, and Jean L. Hodgins and her fiance, Larry France, of Kingsley, Iowa; two stepsons, Francis Brown and his wife, Carol, of Sioux City, David Brown and his wife, Roxie, of Utah; a brother, Russell Peterson and his wife, Yvonne, of St. Paul, two nieces, Tina and Karn; a nephew, Eric; 21, grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a stepson, Matthew Brown and her parents. Pallbearers will be Gary Brown, Wayne Brown, Matt Brown, Pat Morley, Nick Hodgins and Jerry Hale. Louise A. Wyant Louise A. Wyant, 83, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Oct.

23, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City. Burial will be Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m Friday, with family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m.

at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Louise Marie Jackson Louise Marie Jackson, 68, of Sioux City died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001. Services will be 11 a.m today at Christy-Smith Berkemier Chapel with the Rev. Alex T.

Washington officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Jackson was born Aug. 29, 1933, in Sioux City, 1 the daughter of John and Mary (Summers) Peterson.

She lived in Sioux City her entire life. She attended Sioux City public schools. She married John H. Jackson on Feb. 10, 1951, in Sioux City.

He died Nov. 24, 2000, in Sioux City. She worked at Bomgaars, Payless Cashways and was a bookkeeper for the Marina Inn and the Howard Johnson. She had also been a transcriptionist for St. Luke's Regional Medical Center.

She enjoyed knitting, sewing and was a great cook. Survivors include two sons, Steve Jackson and William Jackson, both of Sioux City; two brothers and their wives, Dell and Lois Peterson of Greeley, and John and Bobbie Peterson of Ft. Wayne, a sister and her husband, Alice and George Guillaume of Clariton, a granddaughter her husband, Theresa and Brian Jackson Caskey of Sioux City; and three great-grandchildren, Brianna L. Jackson, Brett G. and Blake J.

Caskey, all of Sioux City; nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Rita and Dorothy. Walter E. Lamoureux SERGEANT BLUFF Walter E. Lamoureux, 85, of Oct.

Sergeant Bluff died Monday, 22, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron, Iowa, with Monsignor Richard Zenk officiating. Burial will be in St.

Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a scripture prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron. Mr. Lamoureux was born March 11, 1916, on the farm in Akron, the son of Edward and Amy (Rush) Lamoureux.

He married June Elaine Douglas on March 4, 1957, in Worthington, Minn. The couple moved to Casper, in 1957 where he was employed with the Wyoming State Children Home for 20 years, retiring in 1977 at which time they moved to Chapel. Neb. There he enjoyed doing odd jobs and carpentry work for all the older ladies in town. In 1995 they moved to Sergeant Bluff to be closer to family as his health was failing.

He enjoyed horses, carpentry and all the family especially the children which he liked to tease and have fun with. Survivors include his wife; a sister, Madeline Bay of Glennwood, a daughter and her husband, Kathy and Mike Suter of Casper; three granddaughters; a grandson; a great and several nieces and nephews and lots of great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patrice Hanford of Casper; eight brothers, Nap, Leonard, Clifford, Charlie. Milford, Loyd, Bill and Bake; and three sisters, Victoria (as a child), Ella and Edna. Pallbearers will be Bruce Lamoureux, Mike Suter, Sam McLarty, Kelly Johnson, Travis Yockey and Chuck Utesch.

Francis, formerly of Sioux City died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at his residence of cancer. Services will be 1 p.m Saturday at Strike Funeral Home in Isanti, Minn. Mr. Mann was born April 17, 1939, in Sioux City, the son of Ray and Ann Mann.

He graduated from East High School in 1958, had a football scholarship to Antelope Valley Junior College and also attended West Texas State. He was a meat cutter in Sioux City, Council Oak and also in Isanti. He enjoyed boating, hunting and fishing. He served in the Army National Guard in 1958 and the Marine Corps in 1962 and was medically discharged. Survivors include his wife, Joyce of St.

Francis; a son and his wife, Tyson and Shelly and a granddaughter, Caitlin, all of Isanti; a brother, Don and his wife, Marian, of Sioux City; a niece, Terri Mann of Sioux City and a nephew, Kelly of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Steve Mann. Gary Lee Mann Gary Lee Mann, 62, of St. Cecelia A. Hettinger Cecelia A.

Hettinger, 88, of Atlantic, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, in Atlantic. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. There is no visitation. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Freda Nemesio Freda Nemesio, 90, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Darrell E. Connolly Darrell F. Connolly, 81, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001. Arrangements are pending with Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Martha A. Conrad Martha A. Conrad, 87, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at a Sioux City nursing and rehab center. Services will be 1 p.m.

Friday at Berkemier Chapel. be in Memoreh ial Park Cemetery. There is no visitation. Area Shirley Ann Nepper UTE, Iowa Shirley Ann Nepper, 63, of Ute died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dunlap.

Services were held on Monday, Oct. 22 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ute with the Rev. Scott Fiege officiating. Burial was in St.

Clair Cemetery in Ute. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa handled the arrangements. Mrs. Nepper was born April 25, 1938, in Auburn, Iowa, the daughter of Otmar and Tena (Berns) Wenck. She grew up on a farm near Auburn.

Her early education was in a rural school near her home and she graduated from the GliddenRalston Community High School with the Class of 1955. After high school, she continued her education in cosmetology at the Fort Dodge School of Cosmetology. After completing her education, she started her own beauty shop in Mapleton, operating it for several years before working in a restaurant and bar, serving as a waitress and tending bar. She also cooked for many years. She then joined her husband in the trucking industry, driving for Krajicek Truck Lines for the last 10 years.

She married Warren Nepper On June 22, 1962, in Glidden, Iowa. The couple settled in Mapleton and were blessed with the birth of two children. In 1966 they moved to Ute. Shirley relaxed at the piano and organ and enjoyed sewing, woodworking, other crafts, baking pies, flowers, gardening and visits with friends. She collected angels and Shirley Temple dolls.

She was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother who had a special adoration for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Lori Head and her husband, John, of Ghent, Patti Miller and her husband, Wade, of Schleswig, Iowa; a son and his wife, Steve and Tara Nepper of Roanoke, her stepmother, Beatrice Wenck of Duluth, two stepdaughters, Linda Gosch and her husband, David, of Charter Oak, Iowa, Donna Jacobs and her husband, Ray, of Las Vegas, a stepson and his wife, Michael and Linda Nepper of Oto, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren: two sisters, Elaine Schmeiser and her husband, Jack, of Glidden, Sharon Subbert and her husband, Jerry, of Scranton; and a brother, Duane Wenck and his wife, Kathy, of Lidderdale. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ronald; two -law, Sharon Wenck and Mary Lee Nepper; and an infant grandson, Quintin Nepper. Pallbearers were Christopher Sparks, Lincoln Schmeiser, Dean Barngrover, Charles Wenck, Justin Nepper, Scott Barngrover, Ernie Schmeiser, Glen Barngrover, Gentry Nepper, Jeffery Sparks and Doug Nepper. Wilma Fedders ORANGE CITY, Iowa Wilma Fedders, 85, of Orange City died Tuesday, Oct.

23, 2001, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital Long Term Care Facility. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 4 p.m.

today, with family present 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Roma A. Hladik ANTHON, Iowa Roma A. Hladik, 88, of Anthon died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Anthon. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Anthon. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.

Paul Martin Dethmann DENISON, Iowa Paul Martin Dethmann, 47, of Denison died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at a Sioux City nursing and rehab center. Memorial services will be 11 a.m Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison with the Revs. Kurt R. Kaiser and David M.

Sewing officiating. Burial will be in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with family present 7 to 8 p.m., at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison. Mr.

Dethmann was born May 31, 1954, in Denison, the son of Wernes P. and Anna Kruthoff Dethmann. He was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the sacrament of Holy Baptism on June 27, 1954, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and confirmed in his Christian faith there on April 7, 1968. He was raised in Denison and graduated from Denison High School with the class of 1972. After high school he attended Iowa State University in Ames for one year before moving to Boulder, Colo.

He continued his education in Boulder while working at Neo Data Services. He was united in marriage with Lee Ericksen and they made their home the Denver area. He completed his education at Metropolitan State College where he received his Bachelor of Science degree. He was employed as an accountant in the Denver area before retiring from the Grande Lumber Company in the midnineties due to failing health. Upon retirement he moved to Idaho Springs, Colorado for health reasons.

In January 1999 he moved to the Lake Ridge Nursing Facility in Lakewood, Colo. Since March 2000 he had resided at Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab in Sioux City. In his spare time, when his health permitted, he enjoyed photography, snow skiing and rafting. Survivors include his mother of Denison; a brother, Wernes Dethmann and his wife, Ruby, of San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Diane DeKok of Sioux City; a niece, Amie De DeKok of Sioux City; two nephews, Erich Dethmann of San Antonio and Kevin Page of Tallahassee, a great-niece, Josie DeKok of Sioux City; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father.

Esther M. Kocmich SCOTLAND, S.D. Esther M. Kocmich, 85, of Scotland died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at the Landmann-Jungman Memorial Hospital in Scotland.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. George Catholic Church in Scotland with the Revs. David Stevens, John Rasmussen and Monsignor Carlton Hermann officiating. Burial will be in the Rosehill Cemetery in Scotland.

Mrs. Kocmich was born May 2, 1916, near Le Mars, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Kathryn (Groon) Pollock. She married Edward J. Kocmich on April 26, 1943, at St. Joseph Hospital Chapel in Sioux City.

They farmed near Lesterville, for many years prior to retiring to Scotland in 1982. They also farmed near Hurley and Yankton, S.D. She was a member of St. George's Catholic Church and Altar Society, Catholic Daughters and Catholic Foresters. Esther was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother.

She especially enjoyed her flower garden, along with calls and visits from her grandchildren, family and friends. Survivors include her husband; three sons and their wives, Gene and Jeanine Kocmich of Hampton, Jerry and Fran Kocmich of Omaha, and Chuck and Karen Kocmich of Phoenix, a daughter and her husband, Peg and Dick Behl of Scotland; three sisters, Ella O'Hara of Sioux City, Evelyn Dreckman and Josephine Kluemper, both of Le Mars; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister. Ruchti MAPLETON, Iowa Florence Mae Ruchti, 90, of Mapleton died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Armstrong, Funeral Home in Mapleton with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating.

Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Mapleton. Visitation will be after 2 p.m today at the funeral home. Mrs. Ruchti was born Jan.

5, 1911, in Monona County, rural Mapleton, the daughter of Marion and Anena (Hansen) Ferdig. She grew up and was educated in the area and became a lifelong resident of the Rodney and Mapleton vicinity. She married Merle Ruchti on Jan. 5, 1963, in the Congregational Church in Rodney. Mr.

Ruchti died Jan. 31, 1991. Florence's life's work was in the care of her home and family. She found pleasure in her skills in gardening and growing flowers. When time allowed, she enjoyed playing cards and had been involved in various card clubs and groups over the years.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Wilfred and Betty Uhl of Smithland, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Norma Ronfeldt Reed and Duane Reed of Atlantic, Iowa; two daughters-in-law, Virginia Olsem and her husband, Arnold of Dyersville, Iowa, and Jan Uhl of Vermillion, S.D.; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a sister, Alma Giles of Onawa, Iowa; and a brother, Donald Ferdig of Longmont, along with several other relatives, neighbors and good friends. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Ronald and Perry; a son-in-law, Gene Ronfeldt; a granddaughter, Terri Ronfeldt; two brothers; and three sisters. Pallbearers will be her six grandsons, Rick, Randy, Richard, Gary and David Uhl and Tim Ronfeldt; Honorary pallbearers will be her four granddaughters, Teresa Uhl Hoeger, Tammy Ronfeldt-Hamilton, Deborah Uhl Reisner, and Kathy Uhl Gudenkauf. Ruring, 78, of Cherokee died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee following a sevenmonth illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee with the Rev. Don Meyer officiating.

Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the church on Saturday. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m today, and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Friday, with family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the Boothby Funeral Home Cherokee. Marion was born July 21, 1923, in Meriden, Iowa, the daughter of Harlan and Thelma (Smith Sexton. She graduated from Cherokee Wilson High School in 1940. She married Jesse. L.

Ruring Jr. on Dec. 7, 1945, in Cherokee. He died Dec. 31, 1987.

She had taught country school. She worked in the kitchen at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital. She and her husband read electric meters for R.E.C. for several years and they mowed several cemeteries in this area. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aid, and the Sew-a-Bit Club.

Survivors include a son, Richard "Dick" Ruring of Washta, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Ruring Todd and her husband, Michael of Cleghorn, Iowa; two grandchildren, Shella and Jason Ruring of Cleghorn; a brother, Edward Sexton of Salt Lake City, Utah; three sisters, Luella Sones and her husband, Bud, of Quimby, Iowa, Harlene Roles of Powell. Judy Meikle and her husband, Lynn, of Cherokee; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Craig Ruring on 24, 1993; and two brothers, Delbert and Wayne Sexton. J. Roscoe Burke ONAWA, Iowa J.

Roscoe Burke, 84, of Onawa died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa. Services will be 10:30 a.m Friday at First Christian Church in Onawa with the Rev. Donald R. Ludwick officiating.

Burial will be in the Onawa Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa is in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Burke was born June 6, 1917, on the family farm northwest of Geneva, the son of James and Minnie (Nodhumb) Burke.

He graduated from Geneva High School in 1934. He married Helen Eliason on Jan. 17, 1942, in York, Neb. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army from 1942 through 1945 in the Philippines.

In 1949 they moved to rural Onawa where he farmed. until retiring in 1985. Mrs. Burke died Dec. 31, 1997, in Mesa, Ariz.

He was a past member of the Congregational Church in Blencoe, Iowa and was presently a member of First Christian Church in Onawa and the American Legion Stevens-Kelley Post 665 of Blencoe for 54 years. Survivors include twin daughters, Jacquline "Jackie" Johnson of Cheyenne, and Jeraldine "Jerri" and her husband, Richard "Dick" Beedle, of Onawa; five grandchildren, Michael Donner, Douglas Donner and his wife, Corinne, Susan and her husband, John Rose, Lori and her husband, Steve Williams, and Craig Beedle and his wife, Julene; two stepgrandsons, Ian and Ryan Johnson; and five great-grandchildren, Melissa a and Matthew Williams, Ryleigh Beedle, and twins, Kayla and Lauren Rose. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; a sister; a son-in-law, Jon Johnson; and an infant grandson, Austin. Elma Marie Ryan ONAWA, Iowa Elma Marie Ryan, 97, of Onawa died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at Elmwood Care Center in Onawa many years shy of her due, but ever close to her beloved rosary.

Private family graveside services were held. Arrangements were under the direction of Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa. Mrs. Ryan was born Jan. 14, 1904.

on a farm east of Soldier, to Ole and Julia (Amundson) Foss. She married James Donald Ryan on Sept. 1, 1940, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Omaha. He died Aug.

31, 1989, in Omaha. She is. survived by her, son, James Daniel, who shall forever remember her many lessons taught; numerous nieces and nephews; and her longtime and caring friends, Edna Mesenbrink, Evelyn Maberry, Bill Degnitz and Jon Nelsen. A tribute, also, to a nurse at Elmwood these last 16 years, Grace Fouts, who cared for Elma, and whom Elma admired. In addition to her husband, Elma was preceded in death by her first-born son, Joseph Donald; and the other of her parents' 11 children.

May she now find the peace of mind in heaven that escaped her here on earth, and may the world somehow, someday know and live the simple, but oh, so right, philosophies that were hers. Donations in her memory to St. John's Catholic Church in Onawa would be appreciated. Redistricting OK'd PIERRE, S.D. (AP) After Democrats mounted a low-key battle Wednesday, the South Dakota House's Republican majority passed its plan for redrawing the boundaries of the state's 35 legislative districts.

The House voted 48-19 to approve the redistricting plan on the second day of a special legislative session. The Senate had passed the measure Tuesday on a vote of 22-12. Votes in both chambers closely followed party lines. Near the end of Wednesday's debate, House Democratic Leader Mel Olson of Mitchell said Democrats favored a plan that would have split fewer counties.
