'THE CHAMP" is a frankly sentimental tale of the love between an over-the-hill boxer and his understanding son.

Jon Voight plays the fallible father in good style, though he seems almost too healthy to be on the skids. Ricky Schroder is the sunshiny 8-year-old, and he is absolutely perfect, a throwback to the inspired cnild stars of the 1930s. Franco Zeffirelli, in his first American-made movie, evidences no cultural barrier, wringing the emotions with closeups of the boy's teary face. Faye Dunaway is effective as Voight's ex-wife, though the reason for thir breakup is not clearly defined. The entire production is first-class, reminiscent of MGM in its heyday.

Rated PG because of some mild swearing. Best sellers Compiled by Publishers Weekly: FICTION 1. "Overload," Arthur Hailey 2. "Good as Gold," Joseph Heller 3. "War and Remembrance," Herman WKOl'K 5.

"THE CHINA SYNDROME" could scarcely be more topical, coinciding with the shutdown of five Eastern nuclear power plants because of earthquake hazard and a bonafide nuclear plant accident in Pennsylvania. The film concerns a TV reporter (Jane Fonda) and cameraman (Michael Douglas) who combine with a nuclear plant official (Jack Lemmon) in an effort to alert the public to potential catastrophe from a Southern California reactor.

The characters are never more than skin-deep, but the events are more important, and director James Bridges builds the tension to an almost unbearable pitch. The issues raised by the film are vital to everyone; it is perhaps unfortunate that the utility company bosses are painted as black as horse-opera villains. Rated PG, with a few expletives. "HAIR" is a joyous celebration of the liberating los. a rare flight of creative imagination that widens the dimensions of the movie musical.

It was fortuitous that "Hair" was not converted to film In the wake of its explosive impact as a stage attraction. The perspective of time (and the end of the Vietnam War) was needed to assess the effects of revolutionary attitudes. While the play was rambling, plotless and somewhat threatening, the movie script (by Michael Weller) Is Involving and cohesive, following an Oklahoma draftee's Introduction to the drug-protest-love children scene of Manhattan. The direction by Milos Forman Is miraculous, especially since he is neither American nor a director of musicals. The singing and dancing Is Inspired, and the exhubcrant cast, headed by John Savage, Treat Williams and Beverly D'Angelo, could not be better, The rating Is PG because of semi-nudity and coarse language.
