THE TAMPA TRIBUNE, Wednesday, December 25, 1985 5-C Hall Gators well represented today in Blue-Gray All-Star Classic College Football Steve Bradley of Indiana. For the South, the signal-callers are Willie "Satellite" Toten of Mississippi Valley State, whose blitz on the NCAA record book includes a career total offense mark of 13,004 yards, and Ken Karcher of Tulane. Receivers for the North are led by Oregon's Lew Barnes, a second-team All-America selection, and Purdue's Steve Griffin, with Fullerton State's James Pruitt, Delaware State's John Taylor and tight ends Sylvester Byrd of Kansas and Greg Baty of Stanford rounding out the oass-catchine corns. 0 i'. Howell served on the U.S.S. Coral Sea as a lieutenant during the Korean war. He returned to college at the University of Florida for a Masters degree he received in 1953. Howell served 31 years in the Hillsborough County School System as a football coach, then dean of students and principal at Oak Grove Junior High School. He is now retired and a member of the Sword and Shield Club.

Alex Edlin was wideout-tight end at the same time as Caldwell, his co-inductee. He had 85 career receptions for 1,400 yards and a 16-yard per catch average. He scored a career total of 60 points. In 1971, he had 40 receptions for 650 yards and four touchdowns. Edlin played one year with the Ottawa Rough Riders Of the Canadian Football League.

He now works for the Miami Sea-quariam where, he captures sea animals and works with them there for television and movies. Paul Orndorff is nationally known now as Mr. Wonderful, the professional wrestler. At Tampa he was known as a determined fullback, playing at the same time as Edlin and Caldwell. In his career, Orndorff rushed 366 times for 1,671 yards, a 4.6 average, and caught 52 passes for five touchdowns, 83 yards and an 11.2 average.

He was a superb blocker, voted the best on the team in 1971-72, as well as best athlete. He had a brief career with the New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears before turning to professional wrestling. He is a star at that, the man who went from being the "Brandon Bull" to "Mr. Wonderful." King said tickets are $30 and now available. He said a crowd of about 700 is expected.

From Page 1C ball efforts won him a scholarship to Louisiana State where he played in 1962-63 before transferring to Tampa in the spring of 1964. He started every game as a Spartan defensive lineman in the 1965 and 1966 seasons, was judged most valuable defensive lineman both of those years. He led the team in tackles, was co-captain, selected to the State of Florida All-Academic team graduating in 1967. Flores began his business with Xerox before joining the Jim Walter Corportation in 1978. He is a vice president and gorup executive now with responsibilities for six Walter operations, including the Celotex Corporation.

Caldwell was a defensive back and kick return man for the 1968-72 Spartans, teams that had a 33-10 record over that period, including a Tangerine Bowl victory over Kent State. He was the most valuable defensive back in 1972. He had 14 career interceptions for 331 yards and returned 36 punts, Caldwell shares an NCAA record with Doc Blan-chard of Army for most touchdowns with interceptions in one game three. Caldwell has his own insurance agency, is a member of the Million Dollar Roundtable, is a past president of the UT Alumni Association and current president of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame chapter in Tampa. Eddie Howell was a Spartan end from 1939-41 and a Little All-Amer-ican for his good play.

He was voted co-captain of the All-State team his final year. He also ran track for thre On TV: Channel 13, noon. Tribune Wires MONT60MERY, Ala. Navy's Napoleon McCallum Notre Dame's Allen Pinkett are among the top college seniors who will be playing today in the 48th annual Blue-Gray Ail-Star Football Classic. Along with the five Florida players, the Gators sent Coach Galen Hall to direct the South squad along with Eddie Robinson of Grambling.

The North coaches are Leon Burtnett of Purdue and Bruce Arians of Temple. McCallum, unlike everyone else, will not be showcasing his talent for the pro scouts. He has a five-year commitment to the Navy between him and a shot in the National Football League. McCallum, who piled up 2,330 all-purpose yards for the Middies' this year, is in a South backfield that includes Florida's talented tandem of tailback Neal Anderson and fullback John L. Williams.

Pinkett, who holds 16 scoring and rushing records at Notre Dame, shares the spotlight in the North backfield with Reuben Mayes of State, who set an NCAA record when he ran for 357 yards against Oregon. The Blue roster, filled for the most part with players whose names are familiar only to the pro scouts and homestate fans, includesfive Notre Dame standouts. The game rarely boasts players from highly ranked teams or a traditional powerhouse like Notre Dame because it is played prior to the major bowl games. This year, however, the Blue-Gray benefited from the Irish's losing record and the NCAA's bowl ban against Florida. The kickoff at Cramton Bowl is scheduled for noon, with Christmas Day temperatures expected to drop below freezing.

While the best-known talent is in the Blue and Gray running back positions, the quarterbacks are well known to the scouts and may turn the game into a passing contest. For the North, the quarterbacks are Mike Norseth of Kansas, who gained 3,214 yards in total offense, and For the South, the receivers include Ernest Givens of Louisvillle, Joe Thomas of Mississippi Valley State, Florida's Ray McDonald and Kelvin Edwards of Liberty University. The tight ends are Carl Hilton of Houston and Jim Popp of Vanderbilt. Defensively, the South is led by Florida linebacker Alonzo Johnson and down lineman T.J. Turner, a 282-pound star from Houston.

Faust names Akron assistants AKRON, Ohio Gerry Faust, the new head football coach at the University of Akron, has started putting to-, gether a coaching staff by hiring three assistants. Faust named Ralph Staub, 57, of Cincinnati; Bob Shaw, 54, of Fayetteville, and Terry Bowden, 29, head coach at Salem College of West Virginia and son of Florida State coach Bobby Bowden, as his first hirings on Monday. Faust, who resigned as Notre Dame football coach at the end of the season, was named coach of the Akron Zips last week. He compiled a 174-17-2 record over 18 seasons at Cincinnati's Moeller High School. Bowden took over a Salem College program that was 0-9-1 the previous year, went 3-7 for two seasons, then posted back-to-back 8-3 marks in 1984 and 1985.

Goldthwaite rolled to the state Class A championship but it was without one sophomore player, who had struggled to get in shape and to play on the varsity, Priest said. "He failed a class and one week later he quit school," Priest said. "He needed to remain in our program. I could have helped motivate him to bring his grades up.

"Now he's gone and he'll never play football again." Sweetwater Coach W.T. Stapler thinks the effects of the law, which forces students to pass all subjects in order to participate in extracurricular activities, is slowly eroding the role of athletics in the educational process. "We coaches have been branded as the bad guys who only want to exploit the kids," Stapler said. "But that's not true. HOUSTON The state's controversial no pass, no play law was no problem for the Sweetwater Mustangs, who didn't lose a varsity player to grades en route to the state Class 4A high school football championship, the first in the school's history.

Electra Coach Joe Allen also had his full varsity lineup in leading the Tigers to the state Class 2A championship. Houston Yates Coach Luther Booker, who coached the Lions to an unbeaten season and the state's Class 5A title, and Chan Priest, coach of Class A state champion Goldthwaite Eagles, had sadder stories to tell. "Two weeks into the state playoffs we lost three players, one of them a starter," Booker said. "They've completely disappeared from our program. Betting figures for December 1984 came to $332,186 against $334,116 through last Saturday. The increase amounted to $1,930. Wilson is counting on the usual turn to higher figures after the Christmas holiday.

"A lot of people are waiting at home for the holidays and attendance should pick up," Wilson said, adding that the cold weather has been a negative factor for a couple Saturday programs. Saturday is the busiest day at the track. Wilson did not compare this year's and last year's figures. Last December there were only nine racing dates, all on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. This year's count included racing on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, plus Friday and Saturday.

The track will be dark today and resume racing Thursday. Post time is 1 p.m. Horse Racing Ocala-bred colt out of the running OCALA Ogygian, a top-ranked 2- year-old, will be out of the running for the Triple Crown next season after injuring an ankle while kicking a rail earlier this month. A bone chip was removed from the colt's right hind leg Monday at Tartan Farms, where it was bred. If all heals well and there are no complications, Ogygian may be able to race again in May or June, said farm manager Bryan Howlett But that would be too late to begin serious competition for the Triple Crown.

Ogygian is one of several Ocala-bred colts in the running for the Eclipse Award as the best 2-year-old. It won all three of its starts this year, including the Belmont Futurity. Meanwhile, the immediate fate of Stephan's Odyssey, a top-ranked 3-year-old old, remained in question at Hialeah Park. The colt suffered a broken leg a week ago. Trainer Woody Stephens had hoped to operate to save the horse for stud service, but blood clots around the break made that too risky.

Racing nightly except on Sundays. Matinees Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. Special matinee program today. No matinee racing Chritmas day. Location: 8300 Nebraska Ave.
