ATLANTA (UPI) The mystery of the "Oriental Nightmare Death Syndrome" continues to puzzle medical researchers after years of investigation and a growing death toll. Since the national Centers for Disease Control began looking into the strange deaths of seemingly healthy Southeast Asian refugees who died suddenly in their sleep few clues have come along to shed light on the enigma. Meanwhile, the death toll has more than doubled. The CDC had recorded 38 fatalities when it started collecting data on the cases in 1981.

The number now stands at 79, said Dr. Roy Baron, the CDC's chief investigator. "We're going on the hypothesis that there may be what we call an abnormal electrical conduction system within the heart," Baron said in an interview. He explained the theory was being explored by the University of Illinois. The victims included 60 Laotian refugees, 10 Kampucheans and nine Viet- drome might be involved in some of the deaths and the victims appeared to have been literally frightened to death while dreaming.

Reports on the Oriental Nightmare Death Syndrome in medical literature describe the deaths of young men in Japan, the Philippines and Hawaii. Witnesses interpreting the terminal groans as signs of terror supported the popular notion the deaths resulted from frightening dreams, the CDC said. But the agency said careful questioning of witnesses in similar deaths in the United States Indicated the terminal sounds were those often heard following cardiac arrest Previous CDC research indicated that the deaths were compatible with a cardiac dysrhythmia, or a heart whose beating has gone completely out of kilter. Baron said the CDC is continuing to collect case reports of the deaths. The agency's research findings probably will be published In medical journals.
