What most people want to know is what happened in the relationship between Selena and her gun-toting fan club president. Rather than explain the situation, the headline-making confrontation is covered in fast-moving news reports.

In an effort to please the growing legion of followers (and Selena's family who produced the film), the murder is little more than a footnote to the minutiae. The rift scene marrying a man dad disapproves of is dispensed with almost as quickly as the death, giving "Selena" the look of a video made to be sold in the singer's boutique. Writerdirector Gregory Nava clearly knows where his loyalties lie.

But to homogenize Selena so thoroughly is wrong. All Mexican-American singers aren't Vikki Carr. Luckily, Nava gave the role to Jennifer Lopez, an incandescent actress who moves well and, with more lipstick than RuPaul, looks a lot like Selena, too. She's up for the film that never is (although tears never fall when she cries) without tarnishing the image that Selena's family has taken pains to polish. "Selena" isn't another "La Bam-ba" or "What's Love Got to Do With It."
