City Journal, Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004 www.siouxcityjournal.com OBITUARIES Local Community benefactor Gleeson dies at 86 Robert E. Gleeson, 86, of Sorts, Memorial City 2004, at died services his will residence. Wednesday, be 2 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church in Sioux City.

There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Mr. Gleeson was president of the Klinger Companies and its affiliated general construction and property investment companies for much of the past 50 years. Widely respected for his personal and business integrity and fairness, as well as financial acumen, he oversaw the growth of the business from a regional to a national constructor.

In Sioux City, where he made his home for more than 60 years, he was highly regarded for his civic generosity and personal kindness. Born Oct. 28, 1917, in Minneapolis, Mr. Gleeson was the youngest of three sons. He graduated from Central High School during the Depression and then, at the age of 16, started working as a bank messenger boy for Northwestern National Bank in Minneapolis.

Filled with a will to succeed and determined to stand out from the other messenger boys, he went to work in a clean white shirt and shined shoes every day, a habit he continued throughout his life. In 1946, he returned to Sioux City after serving in World War IL. He met Helen Jane Klinger, and they were married in 1947. Shortly thereafter he started to work in the Klinger construction business, becoming president in 1967. The Klinger Companies now consists of W.A.

Klinger, L.L.C., Younglove Construction, L.L.C., Gleeson Constructors, L.L.C., Klinger Constructors, L.L.C. of Albuquerque, N.M., and Klinger Properties, Inc. A staunch believer in giving both time and resources back to the community in which one lives, he had an impressive record of community volunteerism and support. He served on the board of directors of Midwest Energy Co. and the Security National Corp.

and was a member of the Policyowner Examining committee for Northwestern Mutual. He was a board member for Goodwill Industries and Briar Cliff University and served as the president of the Siouxland Labor Management committee, Siouxland Chamber of Commerce, Master Builders of Iowa and Greater Siouxland, Inc. He also served as the chair of the Public Library Campaign of the 'Siouxland United Way Campaign. A devoted believer in education, he was honored to receive an honorary doctor of commercial science degree from Morningside College. He was also the recipient of the Briar Cliff Medal of Honor and proudly established the Robert E.

Gleeson Endowed Scholarship at Briar Cliff University, which annually awards funds to financially deserving Briar Cliff students. His community service efforts were widely appreciated, as demonstrated Junior Achievement of Siouxland's inducting the Gleeson family i into the Siouxland Hall of Fame and the Tax Research Conference's awarding Mr. Gleeson and his wife, Helen Jane, with their Civic Excellence Award in 1997. He was also the recipient of Master Builders of Iowa's distinguished Build Iowa Award. Mr.

Gleeson's greatest assets were his unflagging honesty, integrity and kindness. He never tired of learning, reading and teaching others. Though his accomplishments were many, his greatest source pride came from his family, including his wife, Helen Jane; his children, Barbara Johns of Seattle, Dr. Robert K. Gleeson of Milwaukee, John W.

Gleeson of Sioux City and Jane A. Carlson of Minneapolis; his eight grandchildren; and a brother, William B. Gleeson of Alexandria, Minn. To honor his love of books, a Robert E. Gleeson Memorial Fund is being established with the Sioux City Public Library Foundation.

Robert E. Tredway SOUTH SIOUX CITY Robert Earl Tredway, 80, of South Sioux City died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Matney Colonial Manor in South Sioux City. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Glidden City Cemetery, Glidden, Iowa.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present. 6 to 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Sioux City died unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, in Willmar, Minn.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Michelle Williamson of Whitfield United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m.

today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Mr. Barbee was born May 13, 1972, in Sioux City, the son of William H. and Louise E. (Murdock) Barbee Sr.

He was a lifelong Sioux City resident. He married Heather N. Haukap on July 17, 1998, in Elk Point, S.D. He was an avid NASCAR and Dallas Cowboys fan. Survivors include his wife, Heather; two sons, Nathan Alan Barbee, age 8, and Dallas Patrick Barbee, age a daughter, Hannah Louise Barbee, age his father and his wife, William and Julie Barbee of Sioux City; maternal grandmother, June Murdock of Sioux City; paternal grandmother, Alvina Barbee of Sioux City; four brothers, William Barbee Jr.

of Fort Madison, Iowa, Kevin Barbee and his special friend, Wendy Grieve of Sioux City, Terry Barbee and his wife, Kellie, of Sioux City and Ricky Johnson and his special friend, Bethany Markle of Oakland, two sisters, Tina Flores of Sioux City and Rachelle Barbee and her special friend, Josh Kruse of Cedar Falls, Iowa; -in-law, Nancy Haukap of Sioux City; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; and his dog, Boomer. Barbee A. Barbee, 31, of Louis L. Beatty, 45, of Sioux City died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital. Services will be 2 p.m.

10, 1958, in Sioux City, the son of Robert Carl and Francis Claire (Chaussee) Beatty. He was raised i in Sioux City and attended West High School. He lived his entire life in Sioux City. On May 12, 1979, he married Debra Lyn Johnson in Sioux City. They had two children, Clint and Sara.

He was employed with W.A. Klinger as a trucker until his early retirement due to his illness. He was a stock car fan all of his life. He also was a stock car driver at many local tracks, including Interstate Speedway, Alta and Onawa, Iowa. He is survived by his wife, Debra Lyn Beatty of Sioux City; a son, Clint Robert Beatty of Sioux City; a daughter, Sara Marie Beatty of Sioux City; his father, Robert Carl Beatty of Sioux City; two brothers and their wives, Steve and Patty Beatty of Newcastle, and Allan and Kathy Beatty of Sioux City; a special I little angel, AnnDea Rose Boetger; many nieces, nephews and many caring friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Francis Claire Beatty; and a brother, Kevin Beatty. Pence, 49, of North Sioux City died Wednesday, Jan.

28, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be in Memo- rial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m.

Friday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Dorothy Burright, 71, of Omaha, formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at Madonna Home in Lincoln, Neb. following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Sioux City, with Bishop Mark Walker officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Dorothy V. Burright was born Oct. 15, 1932, in Sioux City, the daughter of Charles and Lucille (Bartelt) Barker. She attended school in Sioux City Public Schools. She later attended secretarial school.

She married Benjamin Burright on Nov. 2, 1957, in Elk Point, S.D. She worked for several years for the city of Sioux City in the personnel department. She retired in 1983. In the late 1990s, the couple moved to Omaha to be with their daughter.

Benjamin passed away Aug. 7, 1999, in Omaha. For the past five months, she had been a resident of the Madonna Home in Lincoln. She enjoyed listening to music and playing the piano. She also enjoyed spending time with her family.

She was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Sioux City and later in Omaha. While living in Sioux City, she helped with secretarial duties and also taught Sunday School. While living in Omaha, she was president and secretary of the board for the Millard Manor Apartments. Survivors include three daughters, Sheila Lamb and her husband, Stan of Watertown, S.D., Pam Burright of Omaha and Denise Brennfoerder of Omaha; two sons and their wives, Greg and Dana Barker of Benson, and Mark and Amy Burright of Omaha; a sister, JoAnn Gomez of Sioux City; two brothers and their wives, Eugene and Linda Barker of Cirus Heights, and John and Barbara Barker of Vacaville, 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a stepmother, FranPrescott; a son, Dennis Barker; a brother, Charles Barker and a granddaughter, Katherine Barker.

Pallbearers will be Charlie Barker, Nathan Lamb, Adam Brennfoerder, B.J. Barker, Andrew Barker, Dan Burright, Jeff Barker and Steve Gomez. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Peterson, Ethan Peterson, Noah Burright, Cassie Burright, ShanIsmail and Tara Barker. Arvilla L. Hansen Dorothy V.

Burright V. Arvilla Lucille Hansen, 87, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Sioux City, with the Rev.

Roger Madden officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Arvilla Lucille Hansen was born Jan.

9, 1917, in Toronto, S.D., the daughter of Guy and Ada (Hauser) McMeekin. Her early years were spent in her family's farming and ranching activities in western South Dakota. She came to Sioux City as a young woman, where she met and married Elmer Thorlif Hansen, who was a partner in Soren Hansen and Son Construction. were married April 15, 1939, in Sioux City. They were husband and wife for 60 years before his death in 1999.

She led a very active life and was interested in gardening and birding. She enjoyed painting, reading and traveling. She also was a dedicated to her friends and family. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son: and his wife, Robert and Margaret of Burlington, Iowa; a grandson and his wife, Todd and Diane Hansen of Chicago, a granddaughter and her husband, Jennifer and Usman Sadiq of New York, N.Y.; a niece and dear friend, Deanna and Bill Bower of Sioux City; a nephew, Terry Hansen of Sioux City; a nephew, Mike Mercer of Washington State; and two nieces, Connie and Nancy Mercer, both of Washington State.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; her parents; two brothers and their wives, Grant and Emilie McMeekin and Wilfred and Maxine McMeekin of California. Memorials in her name may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland. Viola M. Newman Viola M. Newman, 92, of Sioux City died Tuesday, 27, 2004, at her residence following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kenny Hsu officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 6:30. p.m., at Anderson- Funeral Home. Mrs.

Newman was born Aug. 20, 1911, in rural Merrill, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Minnie (Marineau) Petersen. She married Curtis G. Newman on April 5, 1933, in Sioux City. He died Dec.

21, 1992, in Sioux City. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and Lutheran Service Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening and traveling. She also enjoyed helping the elderly, however, loving her family was her number one priority.

Survivors include two sons, Merlyn Newman and his wife, Charlene of Viroqua, and Ralph Newman of Piedmont, S.D.; two daughters, Joan Koch and her husband, Stan of Rochester, and Doris Sherrill of Sioux City; a sister, Leona Larson of rural Sioux City; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis; three brothers, Clarence, Kenneth and Edwin; and a son-in-law, Berle Sherrill. Ritz, 67, of La Valle, formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at University Hospitals in Madison, Wis. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel in Sioux City, with the Rev. Roger D.

Graf officiating. Burial will be in Correctionville Cemetery, Correctionville, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr.

Ritz was born Nov. 16, 1936, in Cushing, Iowa, the son of Louis Otto and Caroline Veryl (Gray) Ritz. He was raised in the Sioux City area. He attended Morningside College as a music major and was a member of the TKE Fraternity. While in college, he played the trumpet for various groups including the Sioux City Symphony.

After college, he lived in Omaha, Minneapolis, then Chicago. He was employed with Symbol Technologies as a salesman. After retiring in 1994, he moved to La Valle, Wis. He was a member of the La Valle Sportsman's Club and the volunteer fire department. He really loved hunting, fishing and working with woods in his workshop.

He is survived by a brother and his wife, Terree and Vicki L. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery, Moville, Iowa. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., a rosary at 6:30 p.m.

Iowa Helen M. Banks, 49, of Westfield died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Logan Park Cemetery, Sioux City.

Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Schroeder Funeral Home. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. today, with the Rev. Steve Jewett of Westfield United Congregational Church officiating, at the funeral home.

Helen Banks was born Oct. 2, 1954, in Sioux City, the daughter of Joe and Janet (Hinken) Birkley. She attended school at Westfield Public School. She married Carey A. Banks on Nov.

3, 1972, in Akron, Iowa, and had lived in rural Westfield. She was a member of Westfield United Congregational Church. She had taught Sunday School for several years. She enjoyed her grandchildren and had a talent in art work. She is survived by her husband, Carey Banks; a daughter and her husband, Tracy and Jerod Welch; a son, Quentin Banks; two grandchildren, Ali Rose and Tyler Welch; her mother, Janet Birkley of South Sioux City; three sisters, Rhonda Gensler, Inger Birkley and Penny Birkley; eight brothers, John Birkley, David Miner, Jerry Nelson, Dale Jorgensen, Robert Malcom, Raymond Nelson, Vance Birkley and Zane Birkley; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Joe Birkley; a daughter, Brenda Lee Banks; and her grandparents. Eileen Brenner SCHALLER, Iowa Eileen Brenner, 83, of Schaller died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, in Peoria, Ariz. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St.

Joseph Catholic Church in Schaller. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Friday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m.

and a vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at Fratzke and Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller. Council member, professor, Senate aide Carlson dies VERMILLION, S.D. Loren Merle Carlson, 80, Sioux Falls, S.D., formerly of Vermillion, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at his residence. Services will be 2 p.m.

Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion, with the Rev. Judith Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Bluff View Cemetery, Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m; Friday, with a prayer service at 7. p.m., all at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home in Vermillion.

Mr. Carlson was born Nov. 2, 1923, in Mitchell, the son of Clarence and Edna (Rosenquist) Carlson. He received his bachelors degree from Yankton (S.D.) College, his master's degree from the University of Wisconsin and his law degree from George Washington University. He served in the U.S.

Navy from 1945 to 1946. He married Gladys "Midge" Hole on Dec. 21, 1950, in Winner, S.D. He was a professor in the Political Science Department at the University of South Dakota. He served in the Vermillion City Council for 12 years and as president of the city council for eight years.

He served in the State Budget Office for five years and as director of Legislative Research Council. He worked in the U.S. State Department and was the administrative assistant for U.S. Sens. Francis Case and Joseph Bottum and to U.S.

Congressman Larry Pressler. He was the dean of continuing education, professor of political science and retired as emeritus professor of political science in 1989. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Vermillion Lions, American Legion, American Society of Public Administration and Spirit Mound Trust. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed ballroom dancing, horse; shoes, bowling and Republican politics. He is survived by his wife; Midge of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two daughters, Cathy Gray (Michael Mallory) Minneapolis and Nancy (Stanley) Girard of Portland, a son, Bradley (Paula) Carlson of Minneapolis; grandchildren, Sarah Carlson; Stacey and Douglas Girard; a sister, Clarice Orr of Lincoln, and a brother, Keith Carlson of St.
