It was one of the most highly publicized defensive plays last season and came July 24 against the California Angels in Anaheim. Forced into extra innings, the Tigers had taken a 4-3 lead on a home run by catcher Lance Parrish in the top of the 12th. Then, with two outs and a runner on first base in the bottom of the inning, California's Rod Carew belted a long drive off reliever Aurelio Lopez to deep center field, pushing Lemon to the fence.

Following the trajectory closely, Lemon leaped at the last second, extended his left hand over the fence and robbed Carew of what would have been a game-winning home run. Photographs of the dramatic play appeared in newspapers nationwide the next day and Lemon was the talk of Michigan for nearly a week. "I got fan mail from all over the place after that," Lemon recalled this week. "I got Player of the Week for that and that's the first time I've ever seen somebody get something for a defensive play." But it was more than a defensive gem. It was a spark that propelled Detroit to wins in five of its next six games, moving the Tigers within a half game of the division-leading Baltimore Orioles.

Baltimore, however, was virtually unbeatable and eventually the Tigers dropped back to finish second in the AL East, six games behind the Orioles. "They deserved everything they won last said Lemon. "Baltimore played like champions and we came as close as anyone to playing with them. There are some other good teams in our division, but right now I'd have to say we're the team most likely to overtake them." Detroit won 8 of 13 with Baltimore last season and hit .297 with 19 home runs against the club's highly-regarded pitching. No other team in the league hit Oriole pitching as well.

Lemon hit only .180, though, but drove in 11 runs with three homers. For the season, he "slumped" to .255, his lowest since 1976, but added a career-high 24 home runs and drove in 69 runs. Home runs are fine, said Lemon, but he'd rather see his batting average get back around the level it was when he played for the Chicago White Sox. "Every year, I've always been in the top three or so (in the American League) in doubles, but last year I wasn't," Lemon explained. "I'd like to change that, but really what I'd like to do this season is hit .300 or over with about 20 home runs." Lemon had never hit 20 or more homers before last season and credits Tigers Coach Gates Brown with the increase.

"He (Brown) was very instrumental in me generating more power when I came over from Detroit," said Lemon. "Before I came over (to Detroit), Larry Doby had the most impact on me. He taught me to use my hands and wrist action more at the plate." That, of course, helped Lemon to hit .300 or better three seasons with the Sox. This year, he hopes to get back to his old style of swinging the bat more. "I think this year, with Darrell Evans here now, I can be more myself," said Lemon.

"We're not a ballclub that depends on any one hitter. We've got five or six guys capable of hitting 20 or more home runs, which means I can concentrate more on my average. "You can hit 20 home runs in the first half of the season and they never can take those home runs away from you if you don't hit any the rest of the season," he continued. "But you can hit .300 or better for four or five months, go into a slump for a month and it's all over. "As Ralph Garr once told me, hitting .300 takes a lot of concentration and every day you go out there you put it on the line.

There's much more pressure on you to hit .300 than there is to hit 20 home runs." It is pressure, but it's a kind the hardworking Lemon thrives on.
