He has broadcast more professional football (26 seasons) than any other TV announcer. He was there for Super Bowl I interviewed Vince Lombard! and was absolutely, absolutely intimidated by the and Super Bowl III Namath, the Jets' great upset, who could forget Jones was in Cincinnati to telecast the early "Big Red Machine" baseball years. He has bundled up for downhill skiing coverage in Europe. He reported the United States glory of Carl Lewis, Mary Decker and others at the 1983 World Championships of Track and Field from Helsinki, Finland. And that doesn't even mention his work in college basketball, horse racing, gymnastics, swimming and diving, among others.

On Saturday, Jones takes on a new experience, one which he calls "the greatest event I've ever broadcast." Despite the absence of United States participation, NBC is undertaking the most ambitious World Cup soccer coverage ever by an American network. Saturday's 4 p.m. game matches defending champion Italy against Bulgaria at Mexico City's Azteca Stadium. NBC is carrying the game on tape delay after its Baseball Game of the Week. There will be six other weekend games broadcast by NBC, culminating with the June 29 championship game.

Additionally, ESPN will cover 15 games, including the semifinals. The Spanish International Network, available on some cable systems in the Bay area (Channel 50 on aerial TV), is carrying all the World Cup games in Spanish. The SIN games will be free of commercial interruption. Most Americans consider the Super Bowl or World Series as the biggest of big-time sports events. But the World Cup elicits passionate attention from every corner of the globe.

Brazil is so desperate for information, there are seven different Brazilian TV networks in Mexico to cover the event. Although he has the World Cup's magnitude in perspective, Jones is not a soccer expert. He will draw on the analysis of Paul Gardner and MEXICO CITY (UPI) The president of the World Cup Organizing Committee says starting soccer games in Mexico's mid-day heat allows more people to watch the tournament on television. The month-long soccer classic begins Saturday and two-thirds of the 52 games are scheduled to begin locally at noon when temperatures at several sites soar past 90 degress. The remainder start at 4 p.m.

There have been widespread complaints from players and coaches who contend the heat will play a disproportionate role in determining the next World Cup champion. Guillermo Canedo, president of the World Cup Organizing Committee, said the reason for the timetable was "for the tradition we have in Mexico of playing between noon and 4 p.m and also to allow people all over the world to be able to see the games on television." Canedo's remarks came during a news conference Wednesday to outline Thursday's FIFA Congress, a gathering of world soccer's governing body. Asked about the possible profits that could be made from that time schedule, Canedo replied: "Since we organized the 1970 World Cup, we said that we would never talk about figures. This is organized by private enterprise and that which we win or lose will always be kept secret." Among the players angered by the noon starts is Argentina's Diego Maradona, regarded by many as the world's greatest player. He said the players are "indispensable" and should have been taken into account.

Said Canedo: "As for the temperatures, the players should not be complaining as the 1970 the games were played at the same time and we had excellent matches despite the heat. When there are true athletes, there is no pretext to justify any reduced output, be it for the heat or for the altitude." Rick Davis. But he will not be unprepared. "I got every book I could find on soccer and read them all," said Jones, who, as a 1953 graduate of the University of Arkansas Law School, is used to doing some homework. "Next, I got the soccer tapes and sat down and looked at 36 hours of videotapes, looking again for pacing, timing, terminology and rules enforcement.

Then I created a whole glossary of soccer terms that forms a background. Finally, I studied the individuals, the stars and the players." Jones will arrive in Mexico City with his newly acquired soccer knowledge and trademark enthusiasm. The lives of Gardner and Davis are based around soccer, so they know what they are doing. From a production standpoint, NBC is not on its usual solid footing. The recent earthquake In Mexico created havoc with the country's television system.

NBC will not have unilateral cameras for the games; rather, it will be sharing the cameras with other networks. But NBC will have hand-held cameras roaming the stadium, which it hopes will help convey the World Cup's flavor. It also will have a studio operation in New York, headed by Don Criqui and soccer analyst Seamus Malin, which will provide highlights of other games. Beginning with Sunday's live telecast of the World Cup soccer match between Spain and Brazil from Mexico, NBC and Anheuser-Busch have come up with a novel idea of addressing the problem of putting on a commercial without missing any live action. Under the plan, which has been in the works for three years, NBC will use a variation of a split screen for four spots during the game.

In two of the spots, the screen will show an advertisement over two-thirds of the screen with the other third showing a continuation of the soccer action. COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL. USC vs. Pepperdine for NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship. Announcers: John Tesh, Chris Marlowe.

Ellis Park owner fights summer racing LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) The new owner of Ellis Park in Henderson says he'll fight plans by the owners of Latonia Race Course to hold summer racing in 1987. If approved, Latonia's summer racing would conflict with meets at Ellis Park, as well as River Downs in nearby Cincinnati. "If they intend to apply, we will fight," said Roger Kumar, owner of Ellis Park. "These are our traditional dates and no one else can encroach upon them.

James Thornton, a Louisville businessman who purchased Latonia with Nashville developer Jerry Carroll for $13.5 million, said he would like to open July 1 and run through the end of its usual September meet. If given the dates, the Florence track would also conduct its traditional winter meet, he said. Churchill Downs in Louisville tried summer racing in 1983 and 1984, but it was unsuccessful. Kentucky's four thoroughbred tracks agreed to apply for 1987 dates by June 1, and the state racing commission will award dates by Sept. 15.

Thornton, who is a member of the commission, said Wednesday he has submitted a letter of resignation to the governor. Kumar says Latonia's summer racing would harm racing. 6 Javier 6 Ruflno 7 Arra I 6 Gorrono 2 Onalndla 3 Corea 4 Gorostola THURSDAY'S RESULTS FIRST RACE 516 Mile, Gr.
