It was an extraordinary expense for few people," he said. But, when asked about 1982 Amtrak figures that showed 44,000 people in Pinellas County rode the train that year compared to 33,000 in Tampa, Jacobsen said he was not in the position to debate figures. Amtrak had claimed that it could save $1.3 million a year in the move, which involves providing bus service from Tampa to St. Petersburg-Clearwater and Sarasota-Bradenton, with the same service travelers from those points to Tampa. It was an inconvenience to customers because the Tampa to Pinellas route took 1 hour and 45 minutes over sometimes bumpy tracks.

The bus service is 75 minutes faster, Amtrak said. Todd said she thought Amtraks decision was more politically motivated. "I think it was a political decision. They (Amtrak) threw out statistics on how they'd save money with buses. I can't believe that carting people around in buses is less expensive," she said.

to Young. "Isn't this great? If this does go through the Congress, and I feel confident it will, it will be attributable to Bill Young," she said. And, added Commissioner Gabe Cazares, "This brings Pinellas County back into the 20th century." Specifically, the amendment states that service will be restored within 30 days of enactment of the authorization act. "The corporation (Amtrak) shall reinstate rail passenger service between Tampa, Fla. and St.

Petersburg as such service was in operation as of Jan. 1, 1984," the amendment read. Young would not speculate on how long it will take the Senate to address the legislation, but is confident it will be passed. "It's just a matter of time. If I were (Amtrak President) Graham Claytor I'd be starting those trains up right away," said Young.

Amtrak spokesman John Jacob-sen said the company would abide by Congress' decision, but added Amtrak still feels its decision to eliminate the service is sound. "The operation west of Tampa By STEVE MOORE Tribune Staff Writer The U.S. House of Representatives Tuesday gave a boost to Rep. C.W., Bill Young's quest to restore passenger train service to Pinellas County, passing the Amtrak Authorization Act that includes an amendment prohibiting discontinuance of, the service. Passage of the act, a two-year authorization on federal funding to Amtrak, came late Tuesday.

The legislation now moves to the Senate. If it goes the way of the House, passenger trains, which quit stopping in St. Petersburg-Clearwater Feb. 1, would return this year. "I'm very pleased my colleagues (in the House) supported my efforts in this regard.

We could've given up, but we didn't," said Young in a tele- phone interview from his Washington, D.C., office. Local officials were equally as pleased. County Commissioner Barbara Sheen Todd, who strongly opposed the train company's decision to stop service, said she was elated with this latest development and gave credit Hernando MONTFORT Mary, 62, of Spring Hill, died Monday.
