6-C THE TAMPA TRIBUNE, Wednesday, July 2, 1986 Briefly Tribune Wires 'kW -t lU-i- I'll 2 1 H- jf Hagler said ready to fight Leonard BROCKTON, Mass. Undisputed middleweight boxing champion Marvelous Marvin. Hagler is expected to announce today that he will fight Sugat Ray Leonard instead of meeting Thomas Hearns in a rematch. Hagler has scheduled an 11:30 a.m. EDT news conference at a restaurant in his hometown of Brockton to reveal his long-awaited decision.

Money is the major reason it is believed Hagler will take on Leonard instead of Hearns. It has been reported that a Hagler-Leonard bout in November could be worth $15 million, $10 million of which would go to Hagler. Hagler, 32, scored a third-round technical knockout over Hearns in a stirring Las Vegas brawl in March 1985. However, Hearns was mediocre in scoring an eighth-round TKO against Mark Medal in Las Vegas last week. In addition, Hearns reinjured his right hand against Medal, further fueling speculation that Hagler would choose Leonard as his next opponent.

Leonard, 30, whose career record is 33-1 retired as undisputed welterweight and junior middleweight champ in November 1982, after undergoing surgery for a detatched retina in his left eye. In other boxing news: Renaldo Snipes, who once put heavyweight champion Larry Holmes on the canvas, will begin a comeback Thursday night when he fights Robert Crabtree in a scheduled 10-round bout at the Felt Forum in New York. A municipal court jury in Lakewood, has acquitted former heavyweight boxer Ron Lyle of assault and interference charges stemming from a quarrel outside a boxing club last Elsewhere BASKETBALL: An NCAA committee has recommended that Bradley University be penalized for alleged basketball recruiting violations, the Journal Times of Racine reported. Phoenix Suns assistant coach John Wetzel reportedly is one of five finalists to become the new head coach of the National Basketball Association's Cleveland Cavaliers. The other four finalists for the job created by the recent firing of coach George Karl reportedly are Detroit Pistons assistant Dick Harter, Seattle SuperSonics general manager Lenny Wilkins, Boston Celtics scout Ed Badger and Atlanta Hawks assistant Willis Reed.

OLYMPICS: Athletes from the Soviet Union will compete in the U.S. Olympic Festival for the first time in what officials hope will begin a new era of amateur competition, a U.S. Olympic Committee spokesman said Tuesday. Soviet athletes competing in boxing, cycling and figure skating will take on American medal winners at the Festival, which opens July 25 in Houston. BOWLING: Dave Husted averaged 246 over his final four games of the fifth round Tuesday to jump to a 152-pin lead over Amleto Monacelli in the $115,000 Southern California Open in Riverside, Calif.

TRACK AND FIELD: Said Aouita of Morocco ran the fastest 5,000 meters this year and Valerie Brisco Hooks collected two victories at an IAAF Grand Prix event. Briscoe-Hooks, the 1984 triple Olympic gold medalist, won the 200 meters and the 400 meters in commanding style but her times were less impressive, 22.23 seconds and 50.72 seconds. Auoita finished in 13 minutes, 19.43 seconds. SOCCER: Major Indoor Soccer League owners Tuesday locked out the league's players in a dispute over a tentative contract agreement that has gone unsigned since March. AP photo AP photo Greg Sacks popped his buttons in the winner's circle of the 1985 Geoff Bodine was all smiles when he captured the Daytona 500 Firecracker 400.

last February. New York February. liott and Winston Cup points leader Dale Earnhardt. "That's what you strive for your whole career, to pull into a speedway as the favorite," said Bodine. If he does win, Bodine, as he did in a victory celebration in February, will thank his sponsors, wife Kathy and sons Matthew and Barry in the same breath.

Acknowledging the little woman and kids is not something a macho stock car driver would do, is it? "Maybe not," said Bodine, "but if anybody ever criticized me for doing that it would be because they didn't understand about my family. They've made sacrifices, too. We've dragged our two boys to race tracks all over the country, and I love them. My success is their success. "I've got one brother, Brett, who's racing, and he's going to be a superstar in Winston Cup racing someday.

I have another brother who wants to get into racing, and one or both of my sons might be out there someday. Wouldn't that be something?" It would almost be as unusual as seeing drivers from New York win back-to-back races at Daytona, and as everyone knows, that is something that could not possibly happen. like few drivers before him, to triumph in a plain-looking Chevy with only a handful of sponsor decals covering it, DiGard officials must have felt they had a superstar in the making. Allison, saying he felt too much emphasis was being placed on the Sacks effort, quit the team after the Firecracker. Sacks could not have been in a more desirable position.

But little has gone right for the team since and it is doubtful Sacks' contract will be renewed. "Right now, my biggest concern is what's in store for Greg Sacks in 1987," he said. "I'm not sure what's going to happen. Winning the race last year got me a full-time ride. Maybe what happens this week will be the next step in my progression." Sacks is not given much of a chance to win Friday.

He does not even have old reliable, the Chevrolet that came through for him last year. He sold the car to Ken Ragan, who totaled it at Daytona in February. "Sad to say, but that car won't be racing for anybody anymore," said Sacks. It will probably be up to Bodine to extend New York's Daytona winning streak. He is one of the favorites in the 400-miler, along with El three second-place finishes in '85, but being a perennial runner-up can sometimes be worse than not finishing at all; Harry Gant was tagged with a "can win" reputation for years.

"Winning at Daytona helped prove to me that I could win that big race," said Bodine, who began his Winston Cup career in 1979. "Now when I get in a car, I know what it takes to win. That can be the hardest thing in the world to understand. "In the heat of a race you might find yourself bumping on somebody, doing things you know you ought not do. Sometimes it takes a while to really understand that all that matters is being on the race track on the last lap.

That's the only way you'll ever have a chance of winning." Sacks, a 60-race Winston Cup veteran, does not have the security of Bodine. There are four rades remaining on his contract with DiGard Racing. The Firecracker win came in a DiGard Research Development car that was not supposed to have the mechanical advantages of the machine driven by the team's No. 1 driver. Bobby Allison.

But when Sacks pulled a major upset by holding off Bill Elliott, who would go on to dominate the circuit From Page 1C fields teams in NASCAR, IMSA sports car racing an NHRA drag racing and will have defending Winston Cup driving champion Darrell Waltrip in his stable in 1987. Hendrick also owns a NASCAR machine driven by Tim Richmond. "What Rick has done in a short period of time is phenomenal," said Bodine, who insists he is not concerned about a dropoff in performance with the addition of Waltrip. "We're not team cars," said Bodine, "we're just owned by the same man. I'm not worried about Waltrip coming in and stealing something from me.

"I think we will gain by it. We've kept the teams separate so far and Waltrip's will be separate, too. Some of, the good things from all of the teams should filter down to the others, so how can you lose?" Bodine speaks with much more confidence than he did before winning the 500. He began his third season with Hendrick having only three 1984 wins to his credit. There were Rose expected to stay as USF basketball coach By BILL FAY Tribune Sports Writer July 1 came and passed as just another day in the men's basketball office at South Florida.

It was supposed to be the day that USF Coach Lee Rose declared his intention to stay or leave his post, but there was no need for any declarations, according to USF President, Dr. John Lott Brown. "Coach Rose has a four-year contract with us to coach basketball and that is what he'll be doing," Brown said. "We never issued him any deadline for reaffirming that." Rose, who is on vacation, said he wasn't aware of any decision deadline either. "I have a four-year contract and I intend to honor the wording in the contract," he said.

Rose's contract, worth $116,000 per year, was signed last September. Brown said the business of a July 1 deadline came up when Rose was being considered for another position at the university. "I asked Coach Rose to let me know by July 1 if he still had any interest in the position and he told me that he was satisfied to remain as basketball coach, so that's where he'll be," Brown said. "I hope he has a successful year and we have a great team." his sibwisttM'tf leems somewhat rejuvenated. "There are a lot more races left, a lot more things can happen "between now and the rest of the year," he said in what might be interpreted as a warning to his competitors.

Firecracker From Page 1C year to year," said Elliott. "Sometimes there are just things you can't overcome. But I'll tell you, it doesn't seem like anyone has been dominating this year, as far as winning races." That could not be said in '85, when Elliott's presence made everyone else's race a duel for second place. But that could have taken its toll on Elliott and his family, who were under considerable pressure everytime they arrived at a track. "Last year, the way things were, we were ready for it to be over for a while," said Elliott.
