'P-M. THE TAMPA TRIBUNE, Friday, November 41983 9-C Florida's Peace closing in onfhree SEC passing marks Lakeland's Wayne Peace is poised to rewrite the Southeastern Conference record book, but will he have a win over Georgia to his credit when his career at Florida is over? Peace Record Watch SEC Career Records Passes Attempted: John Reaves, Florida, Whit Taylor, Vanderbilt, Wayne Peace.Florida, 931. Passes Completed: John Reaves, Florida, 603; Wayne Peace, Florida, 570; Whit Taylor, Vanderbilt, 555. Yards Passing: John Reaves, Florida, Wayne Peace, Florida, Whit Vanderbilt, 6,307 Total Offense: John Reaves, Florida, Pat Sullivan, Auburn, Whit Taylor, Vanderbilt, John Fourcade, Ole Miss, Wayne Peace, Florida, 6,386. His 10-of-19 passing day for 102 yards and two interceptions was his poorest game of the year.

"When something like that happens, you just want to forget about it," he said. "Me and Randy Clark went out and got a couple of beers and pretty much forgot about it. But other people didn't forget about it They brought it up all the time. "I know I played badly. The biggest thing that I didn't do was throw to my second and third receivers.

I went to the primary man too often and I got into trouble." But it's another year, one Peace has been waiting on for 364 days. So Saturday he'll try again. An 0-4 mark againt Georgia is a record Peace isn't after. The Tampa Gator Club will meet Saturday at the Cooper's Pond Apartments clubhouse to view the televised Florida-Georgia game. It is free for members and $2 for non-members, with beer and snacks available.

By MICK ELLIOTT Tribune Sports Writer With three regular-season games and an expected bowl game remaining in his University of Florida football career, quarterback Wayne Peace has started a personal assault on the Southeastern Conference record book. At his present pace, the senior from Lakeland could move into first-place in SEC career standings in passes completed, passes attempted and yards passing before he is finished. Those marks would go nicely with the NCAA completion percentage record (70.73) he set last year. But for alj the success and all the touchdowns, there is one thing Wayne Peace has never done as a Florida Gators quarterback. It's the same thing Charley Pell has not done as a Gator coach.

Beat Georgia. For that matter, no one in the SEC has exactly made a habit of stopping the Bulldogs. They have won 22 straight conference games well against them, except for last year, but having played well and losing isn't very fulfilling. "But I'll be loose. This is the last time I'll ever play them, so why be uptight about it? I'll try to go out there and enjoy myself.

Hopefully, things will turn out all right. The big key is not to start slow. "Last year the offense and defense started slow and that gave Georgia the lift they needed. We didn't get the running game or passing game going at all last year." Last year, it was over before the second quarter. As a freshman, Peace completed 20 of 37 passes for 286 yards and one TD; as a sophomore he hit 24 of 37 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns.

But last year, he never got started. Young Seminoles grow up Bowden Supreme Court justice sacks English's bid to rejoin Green Wave V- 1 Li V4 -A, I I and have claimed three straight conference titles. But none of the other 19 victories can compare with the last three over Florida. Three years ago the Gators were done in by The Play a Buck Belue-to-Lindsay Scott 93-yard TD, pass in the final minute; two years ago it was an 80-yard, Herschel Walker-, powered march in the final minutes. Those made for back-to-back 26-21 wins, before last year's 44-0 beating.

So Saturday afternoon, at 3:45 with a regional TV audience and 80,000 fans watching. Peace gets his last chance. And as it has been three times before, the SEC championship is on the line. "Yeah, it's a big deal that we haven't beaten Georgia while I've been here," Peace said. "I've played College Football "We'll do what we've always done, wait for the NCAA to tell us what to do," said school spokesman M.L.

LaGarde. NCAA spokesman Dave Cawood said his organization would study the situation. "We will be reviewing this no matter what Tulane does but we won't do anything before the bowl (invitation) date," Cawood said. "I know it it means to Florida State and it could mean the difference in a winning and losing season at Mississippi, too." English began his collegiate career at Michigan State, then enrolled at Allegheny Junior College in Pittsburgh for a year and subsequently played two years at Iowa State. He left Iowa State last winter, spent a semester and summer at Delgado Junior College in New Orleans, then enrolled at Tulane.

The NCAA requires players to sit out a year when they transfer to prevent athletes from switching schools just to play football Violation 'ridiculous' NASHVILLE, Tenn. Vanderbilt Football Coach George Macln-tyre said his violation of an NCAA rule against giving tickets to high school coaches "is so innocent that it is ridiculous." Florida officials first complained to the Southeastern Conference office about their suspicions that two unfamiliar faces on the sidelines at the Vanderbiit-Florida game Oct 8 were high school recruits. Maclntyre quickly explained that the two were high school coaches, not players. But his explanation became an indictment on another NCAA rule that says visiting teams cannot give tickets to high school coaches. "It is just all so innocent that it is ridiculous," Maclntyre said.

"I am guilty of giving tickets to former players and old friends who wanted to see our game. I never thought in the flat and another on Collier's 5-yard run two minutes earlier at the 9:47 mark. Justice Byron R.

White, without comment, rejected an emergency request by English to play against Virginia Tech Saturday and against Louisiana State Nov. 24. English's request was made to White, a former Ail-American running back at the University of Colorado and former All-Pro with the Pittsburgh Steelers, because White handles emergency cases from Louisiana for the high court. English, son of Tulane's first-year Coach Wally English, was declared ineligible by the National, Collegiate Athletic Association when he transferred to Tulane and tried to play without sitting out a full season. His lawsuit accused the NCAA of violating federal antitrust law by monopolizing control over big-time college football.

i Lawyers for English asked White to permit the quarterback to play, pending further lower court action in the case. English played in Tulane's first six games this season under orders from lower courts, but sat out the last three games. In one of those games, he led the Green Wave to a 34-28 upset victory over Florida State, a game that could have big implications on FSU's hopes for a bowl invitation. The Seminoles are 5-3 heading into Saturday's game with South Carolina and officials at FSU have wondered privately if Tulane might not forfeit the game. Publicly, FSU was keeping mum.

"I've got confidence that Tulane will handle the situation in the proper way," Florida State Athletic Director CW. "Hootie" Ingram said. "I've been impressed with the Tulane administration all the way down the line with the way they've handled this. They've been above board and honorable." Tulane had no immediate comment Thursday. FSU coach Bobby Bowden said he's feeling better about his club as the younger players learn their roles.

Bowden hopes the improvement in quarterbacks Bob Davis and Eric Thomas will have the greatest impact Saturday night against visiting South Carolina. "It's on the line for them now, with Kelly (Lowrey) out" he said. "Davis and Thomas both have looked good in practice, although Bob wasn't too sharp today.

But hopefully he will be on Saturday." Seminole athletic director CW. "Hootie" Ingram said Thursday that about 1,500 tickets remained for the South Carolina game, and he expected those to be gone by game time. And if you want a "statistic, here's one: 80 percent of the Florida wins over Georgia' have come after they lost to Auburn. I just hope we can hang in there.

By ELGIN WHITE Tribune Correspondent TALLAHASSEE The steady progression of some of his younger players probably has Florida State's Bobby Bowden a little more confident about his football team's chances in each game now. "That sure doesn't mean we think we are that much better, but we are better than we were say four to five weeks ago. And though much of that can be attributed to improvement each week by our regulars, the fact that some of the young people have come through has a lot to do with it" Bowden specifically pointed to freshman linebacker Fred Jones of Miami. "He has all the makings of a tremendous player," Bowden said. "He played very well last week and should see a lot more action this week.

"Then there is Chuck Wells from Orange Park. Another freshman who has been coming on strong at fullback, and boy, did he come at the right time now that Cedric Jones is out. "Stanley Scott, a sophomore outside linebacker from Brandon has been really contributing, too. Another comer at fullback is Horace Willmot from Delray Beach. And Lenny Chavers is coming back strong at nose, and Jimbo Thompson, who I really didn't know would Klein From Page 1C no patsy Saturday.

With their great speed on offense and defense, the Pirates can score in clusters. They've twice this season been to Florida and lost by a total of eight points to FSU (47-46) and Florida (24-17). "We recognize they have a tremendous opportunity to come into the Orange Bowl and play against the No. 5 team in America," Schnellenberger notes ruefully and warns his men that in facing Pirate QB Kevin Ingram they go against "an escape artist who triggers an explosive offense." Ingram has passsed for five touchdowns this year and run for five. FSU remains attractive to scouts of a lesser bowl than the big four with its 5-3 record after its sensational win over Arizona State.

Hubbard believes that the Rattlers can still earn a playoff spot if they win their remaining three games. most painful loss, perhaps, for Florida. Biggest losslosses to Florida? Hah.

I have visions before me A now. I see Jack Harper catching "passes from Steve Spurrier to beat us in 1965, after we had fought back and gone ahead. I see Harper hitting on the 1 and skidding in. I see the screen pass (to Richard Trapp) when he ran all over the field to score and we could not tackle him. I see Jack Youngblobd snatching a ball away from Ricky Lake and John Reaves throwing touchdown passes to Carlos Alvarez.

"It isn't important what the fans think of our defense," Tranmer said. "You try to win a game and when it's done, you look ahead to the next one." But while downplaying the importance of what others think about the defense, Tranmer says the Corn-huskers are "giving everthing just a little extra" in practice this week.

Nebraska is 9-0 on the season and undefeated in four Big Eight contests. Iowa State is 3-5 on the season with a 2-2 league record. Well, Auburn definitely has the A best of that with an open date "between Florida and Georgia while we play, Florida and us, each other back to back.

It has gotten more attention this year because of the records of the three teams and impact on the SEC championship. Biggest winwins over Florida? Top-ranked Nebraska will face a test Saturday that may worry Big Red fans more than it will the Cornhusker defense. Nebraska will square off against Iowa State and its hard-throwing quarterback, Dave Archer.

Archer needs just 100 yards in completions to reach the career level. Only five quarterbacks in the Big Eight Conference have reached that status. Nebraska defensive co-captain Mike Tranmer says he hopes the Iowa State game will give the Corn-huskers a vehicle to show fans that they are a solid unit The Husker defenders gave up Tech past Tech, however, countered when Collier sprinted .22 yards for a clinching touchdown with 7:44 remaining in the game to give the Yellow Jackets some breathing room at 31-21. Virginia scored again with 50 seconds left when quarterback Wayne Schucts connected on a 17-yard pass to Billy Griggs. Tech had maintained its lead in the third period on a 1-yard TD plunge by Ronnie Cone and Ron Rice's 46-yard field goal.

Following a Virginia punt to the and ticket allotments were never satisfactory. Now that's not so. At one time the powers that be in Jacksonville were far more interested in having Florida here than Georgia. That has changed. The Gator Bowl is enlarged and a good facility.

There is no longer any real effort to make it a home-and-home series, I don't think. I mean the north Georgia and Atlanta people would prefer it probably, but not South Georgia. No, it's fine now in Jacksonville. QSome say Georgia plays a soft schedule? Well, everything is relative. A Somebody ranked our schedule "the 11th toughest recently.

Best Florida team I have seen, best team we have played this year, of course. Florida quarterback Wayne Peace, assess him. I remember him as a freshman A and how well he played against "us. He is the best third- or fourth-down converter I have seen. And he has started 36 games.
