P2 7-C STATE THE TAMPA TRIBUNE, Wednesday, June 1 1 1986 Boston's Sweet 16 party I lit Tribune Wires BOSTON Bursting with pride and roaring their devotion, a green-tinted, beer-drinking throng of more than a million fans jammed city streets Tuesday to hail the Boston Celtics as the conquering heroes of the National Basketball Association. "Welcome to Sweet 16!" growled Johnny Most, the radio voice of the Celtics to start off VA-si ft i Wia a mammoth "Celtics Pride Day" rally on Pro Basketball College Basketball Jurors watch videotape in bribery trial NEW ORLEANS (UPI) Jurors in the sports bribery retrial of for- mer Tulane basketball star John "Hot Rod" Williams Tuesday watched a videotape in which Wil- Hams admitted receiving $1,900 after two games he allegedly helped fix. But Williams claimed on the videotape made by authorities on the night of his arrest in March 1985 he did not know why he was paid the money and said he "did nothing wrong" in either game. "I don't have no idea (whee the money came he said on the tape. "I don't know how the money was delivered to me.

When I got there, the money was at my room that night." Williams and eight others were charged with conspiring to trade $19,500 for shaving points in games against Memphis State and Southern Mississippi in February 1985. A simi- lar point-shaving plan for a game at Virginia Tech never was carried out, .1 Orleans Parish prosecutors allege. Three former Tulane students '-and a former Green Wave player have pleaded guilty to sports brib- 2 ery. Four others, including another player, face trial on similar carges. Presentation of the 16-minute videotape came during testimony by assistant district attorney Eric Dube- lier, who headed the investigation into the sports bribery scheme.

Dubelier told jurors about the plea bargains accepted by four de- 'Z' fendants in the case and about the immunity granted to former players Clyde Eads and Jon Johnson. All six are expected to testify against Wil-liams. Defense attorney Michael Green attacked the immunity agreements and the plea bargains, pointing out 'i prosecutors allowed admitted drug users, game fixers and bribers to es- cape without prison sentences. Bill Walton and cigar-chomping Kevin McHale react to the crowd along the parade route as the Celtics celebrated their 16th NBA title while Larry Bird, right, holds the championship trophy aloft at City Hall. AP photos City Hall Plaza to mark the team's 16th championship, gained Sunday in a 114-97 victory over the Houston Rockets.

Responding to chants of "Larry! Larry!" team captain and three-time Most Valuable Player Larry Bird touched off pandemonium when he appeared on the City Hall balcony, waved to the crowd, and held aloft the gold NBA championship trophy. "Go ahead, make my day," Bird said. "We're very proud. We as a team feel we got the greatest team ever assembled here. Hopefully, we can prove it by getting back-to-back championships." Mayor Raymond Flynn presented two boxes of cigars to Celtics president and guru Red Auerbach, who thanked the fans and declared, "This year is the sweetest." "We love it.

We enjoy it. Thank you," said Celtics Coach K.C. Jones. Bill Walton, the hard-working back-up center who joined the team last fall, beamed from the balcony, holding his long arms over his head. In scenes reminiscent of a warm-weather St.

Patrick's Day, Celtics fans upheld a strict green-and-whit dress code. Signs praised the Celtics and taunted 7-foot-4 Houston forward Ralph Sampson, who was ejected from game five for punching 6-1 Celtics guard Jerry Sicht-ing. "Jerry Sichting might not have been able to whip Ralph Sampson, but I know I can," declared Bird. "Akeem Olajuwon never heard of Celtics' tradition, but I bet he's had sleepless nights the last couple of days. "The players, coaches and the organization would like to thank the Boston police for doing a heck of a job, because any time you're around a bunch of animals you've gotta have protection.

This one's sweet this year." Despite the drinking and rowdiness, there were few arrests or reports of injuries. Police spokeswoman Jane Sheehan said 25 people were treated at the scene for minor ailments by emergency medical teams and seven were Sampson fined $5,000 for fight NEW YORK Ralph Sampson, the 7-foot-4 star of the Houston Rockets, was fined $5,000 by the NBA for his part in the fight in Game 5 of the championship series with Boston that resulted in his ejection. The league fined 16 other players a total of $11,000 for their parts in the fight in the game in Houston Thursday night. Sampson was ejected early in the second quarter after hitting 6-1 Jerry Sichting of Boston. Sichting, Dennis Johnson of the Celtics and the Rockets' Akeem Olajuwon were each fined $1,500 and 13 other players were fined $500 apiece for leaving the bench areas.

They were Craig Ehlo, Steve Harris, Allen Leavell, Hank McDowell, Jim Petersen and Granville Waiters of Houston, and Danny Ainge, Rick Carlisle, Greg Kite, Kevin McHale, David Thirdkill, Sam Vincent and Scott Wedman of Boston. Blazers to look at Spain star PORTLAND The Portland Trail Blazers have announced that they will give 6-foot-9 Spanish basketball star Fernando Martin a tryout this summer. "He is the epitome of what a great player should be," West said. "The Celtics always seem to have one guy who rises above and beyond other people. Add that to the talent they have and they're going to win." Bird, who won his second Championship Series Most Valuable Player trophy during the Celtics' six-game victory over the Houston Rockets in the finals, is capable of determining Boston's chances at repeating, West said.

"He can change the course of events all by himself," West said. "Like in this (championship) series. When you get into position to win with a team like that and a player like him, the results are pretty predictable." The Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs by the Rockets 4-1 in the Western Conference finals, foiling their attempt to defend the NBA title they won a year ago. Would Los Angeles have done any better than Houston did against the Celtics? "It's really hard to tell how we might have fared with Boston, but what you've got to look at is the Houston team and its front line," West said. "There's no better front line in basketball with Akeem Olajuwon, Ralph Sampson and Rodney McCray.

"The difference was experience. They didn't have it. Boston did." arrested for being disorderly. She said police spotters estimated more than 1 million fans participated. West: Repeating will be tough INGLEWOOD, Calif.

Now that the Boston Celtics have safely tucked that 16th world championship banner away in the Boston Garden, they'll have to defend it next spring. No team has successfully defended an NBA title since 1969, and General Manager Jerry West of the Los Angeles Lakers expressed the opinion that the Celtics should expect a tough go of it. West also pointed out that the Celtics have one thing the previous 17 NBA champs lacked in their attempt to repeat Larry Bird. Nonetheless, the Celtics' success depends on other things as well. "Just like we did, they'll find it is harder the second time around," West said.

"Nothing goes smoothly. They have to remain relatively injury free, which they did, except for when (Kevin) McHale went out a little bit. "But, of course, there is the factor." When asked to elaborate, he simply stated, "Larry Bird." Tuesday night In the league opener against the Staten Island Stallions, Lieberman became the first woman to participate In a men's basketball league.

"We think Nancy will be our next Manute Bol In terms of giving the league exposure," USBL Public Rel-tions Director Mike Bovino said. "We call ourselves a league of opportunity and Nancy just underlines that fact" Lieberman may be the USBL's drawing card, but the league also features several players with NBA experience and potential. Here is a brief look at the USBL's teams: GOLDCOAST STINGRAYS, West Palm Beach Joe Fields, 58, who coached at Lake City Com coached by Gerald Oliver, feature guard Kevin Williams, forward Marc Glass and center Eric Fernsten all members of the CBA champion Thrillers. Williams, who scored 46 points in a Sunday night exhibition game, and Georgia rookie Joe Ward pack a quick, high-scoring backcourt punch. The Stallions also have former Tulane star John "Hot Rod" Williams on the roster.

But Williams will be out indefinitely. He Is standing trial in New Orleans on accusations that he fixed a pair of basketball games in college. TAMPA BAY FLASH, Tampa -An expansion team headed by former South Florida standout Tony Grier and Tampa Catholic Coach Gordon Gibbons. The team has NBA experience in Don Collins (Atlanta, Washington) and Kenny Green (New York), but most of the attention will be directed toward 6-6 guard Charlie Bradley and 6-1 guard Horace Broadnax, both Hillsborough County high school products. A player to watch Is 5-9 Memphis State rookie guard Andre Turner, who should be an early-round pick in the June 17 NBA draft WESTCHESTER GOLDEN APPLES, White Plains, N.Y.

The team has a Polk County flavor with former Florida Southern Coach Hal Wisell and ex-Lakeland Kathleen prep Ail-American George Almones. The Stingrays are an expansion team that has merged with the defunct Long Island Knights.

JERSEY JAMMERS, Jersey City, NJ. Former Boston Celtics guard Nate Archibald, who spent last season as an assistant under Hugh Durham at the University of Georgia, Is the coach. The Jammers, 18-7 last season, will look to 6-10 center Richard Mud (Michigan State), 6-8 forward John Devereaux (Ohio State) and 5-9 guard Karl Golston (Loyola of Chicago). SPRINGFIELD FAME, Springfield, Mass. At 19-6, the Fame was declared league champions last year.

There was not a championship series. The last part of the season was cancelled because many players were leaving the league to participate in NBA camps. Gordon Gibbons, associate head coach, says, however, that his team will not be unprepared if the action slows.

"We've got four or five very basic patterns that we hope can put the defense in a bind," he said. One USBL rule worth noting is the league allows teams to play zone and there Is a 30-sec-ond shot clock. "We'll probably stick to the man-to-man ourselves," Grier said. "We have practiced a zone if the situation calls for It, but I don't think we'll need to use IL" Flash From Page 1C "I hope we can work things out," he said. "I'm excited about playing here again and if everything works out, I should be out there on the floor." Finally, there is Curtis Kitchen off last year's USF team.

Kitchen has added IS pounds of muscle to his 6-foot-9 frame and has been surprisingly Impressive In the Flash practice sessions. Broadnax will direct a starting lineup that has Bradley and former Tampa Bay Thriller Don Collins on the wings, with Kenny Stancell and Kenny Green the low post players.
