I ZEPHYRHILLS The seedjngs for the 3A-District 7 volleyball tournament at Zephyrhills High on Wednesday through Friday were announced Friday with top-seeded Tampa Catholic receiving a first-round bye. The Lady Crusaders, holders of a 17-1 record against 3A and 4A schools, will sit out Wednesday's action before playing their first match Thursday at 5 p.m. Opening day action Wednesday has No. 4 Springstead (12-4) meeting No. 5 Pasco (7-12) at 4:30 p.m.; No.

Hernando turned back Zephyrhills Wednesday afternoon at home, 15-11, 15-2, to clinch the league crown. The Leopards finished conference play with a 13-1 record, while Tarpon Springs finished in a tie with Springstead in second a game back. Hernando also boosted its overall record to 21-4 by beating non-conference foe Citrus last Thursday, 15-12, 8-15, 15-8, to conclude regular season action. Hernando plays next in the district tournament at Zephyr I hills, Nov! 4-6. Pairings will be announced Friday.

Jeanne Griffin was the star for Hernando in the first game against Zephyrhills by scoring eight points. Sandi McNeal added four points. McNeal and Griffin collected six and three points respectively in the clinching second game against the Bulldogs. Wendy Winstead and Becky Drummond scored six and five points respectively for Hernando in its first game over Citrus, while McNeal had eight points and Clara Williams three in the third and deciding game. It's the first GCC championship for the Hernando volleyball team.

Meanwhile, Springstead ended its regular season on a bright note Thursday night with a thrilling victory over Tarpon Springs, enabling the Lady Eagles to finish in a tie with the Lady Spongers behind league champion Hernando. The Lady Eagles won the first game, 15-12, dropped the second, 7-15, but bounced back to claim the third, 15-13. Springstead, which finished regular season play at 14-4 and conference play at 1 1-3, split two matches Wednesday night in Tampa.
