(AP) Two brothers found guilty of stabbing and partially scalping an Erie woman were sentenced to 74 to 15 years in prison, authorities say. Erie County Judge William Phadt, who imposed maximum sentences on Dennis Xethakis, 32, and his brother, Larry, 38, said it was one of the most brutal crimes he had ever seen. The two men were convicted last November on charges of attempted homicide, criminal conspiracy and aggravated assault in connection with the June 1983 attack on Larry's wife, Josie. The crime took place in the garage of Larry's home in Erie. Dennis, 32, of Lake City, was also convicted of possessing an instrument of crime.

During sentencing Tuesday, Assistant District Attorney Paul Susko read a letter written by Mrs. Xethakis to the court in which she described her husband and brother-in-law as "animals cold and heartless and not humans." If they are released, she said, "my life will end." She said she feared they would "finish what they started out to do." Indiana, PA 349-7474 or 463-0775 Like a good neighbor, State Farm is tnere.
