The Sioux City Journal, Monday, December 19, 1977-C3 Eagles zap Jets, 27-0 Tampa Bay victor again Running-back Louis Carter had opened the scoring on a 1-yard TD plunge on Tampa's first possession, which was set up by an interception. With the ball on the 1-yard line, Huff passed 62 yards from deep in his end zone to Owens, who was waiting on St. Louis' 37. The Cardinals managed to stop a TD drive and the Bucs settled for Dave Green's 23-yard field goal. St.

HONOLULU AP) A legal battle looms over which all-star game Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell will play in on Jan. 7. $: George Boucher, executive director of the Hula Bowl, said he might seek a court injunction to prevent the Texas running back from playing in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, which is scheduled the same day as the Hula Bowl. Boucher said he has a signed agreement from Campbell to play in the all-star game here.

The agreement, dated Oct. 6, also was signed by Darrell Royal, athletic director at the University of Texas, Boucher said. However, Campbell's name was included in the list of players released by the Senior Bowl. And Campbell told a Honolulu radio station that he intends to play in the contest in Mobile. Boucher also believes a decision by Campbell to play ijij in the Senior Bowl could make him ineligible to play in the top-ranked Longhorns in the Cotton Bowl game against Notre Dame on Jan.

2. He cited a National Collegiate Athletic Association rule which makes a player ineligible for a post-season bowl game if he has signed an agreement, prior to that game, to play in an all-star game in which he would be paid. Campbell told the local radio station he hasn't signed anything with the Senior Bowl. Players in te Senior Bowl are paid, while the Hula Bowl offers only a trip to Hawaii and accomodations. Boucher said he will ask the NCAA to investigate the recruiting methods of the Senior Bowl.

Walden given Cougars9 nod TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -Quarterback Gary Huff hit Morris Owens with a 61-yard bomb for a touchdown and a 62-yarder to set up another as Tampa Bay finally put it all together at home and gave loyal, screaming fans a Christmas present a 17-7 National Football League upset over St. Louis. Buoyed by 21 standing ovations from a jubilant crowd of 56,922 who waited through five straight shutouts at home for their chance to swarm the victory field the Bucs stretched their winning streak to two after 26 losses over two years. This happened despite the presence of five St.

Louis players just named to the NFL Pro Bowl in Tampa on Jan. 23. The Cardinals, frustrated since last week's loss to Washington knocked them out of playoff contention, lost ace running-back Teny Metcalf early in the game and never really threatened. They ended the season with a 7-7 record. Huff hit Owens with the 61-yarder to put the Bucs ahead 14-0 in the second quarter.

AP makes a futile attempt to bring him Laserphoto) yards in the first half, including only one yard in the air, to finish their season at 5-9. It was their best mark in three years. The Jets, who finished with a 3-11 mark for the third straight year, got their deepest penetration of the game at the Eagle 26, but the second period drive fizzled.

With only 19,241 in attendance, Jaworski got the Eagles on the scoreboard with a 1-yard sneak eight minutes into the game, capping an 11-play, 50-yard drive. On New York's next play from scrimmage, strong safety Randy Logan intercepted a Richard Todd pass and returned it 45 yards to the New York five. Todd was penalized for a facemask violation on the tackle, putting the ball on the two. Montgomery, who gained 76 yards on 21 carries in his first start, slammed over for the score three plays later. The Eagles made it three scores in three possessions on their next series.

All-Pro linebacker Bill Bergey pounced on a Todd fumble at the Jets' 23, resulting in Mike-Mayer's 39-yarder. Bergey intercepted a Todd pass in the fourth period, leading to a six play drive that covered 57 yards with Montgomery bursting over for the score. NY. A touchdown by quarterback Ron Jaworski and Montgomery's first score came only 66 seconds apart in the first period and a stingy Philadelphia defense forced three key turnovers in a driving downpour.

The Eagles, who also got first half field goals of 39 and 41 yards from Nick Mike-Mayer, held the Jets to 35 total Falcons' defense sets mark ATLANTA (AP) Haskel Stanback ran for 129 yards and two touchdowns and Steve Bartkowski hurled two scoring passes as the Atlanta Falcons crushed the New Orleans Saints 35-7 Sunday and set a modern National Football League scoring defense record. The seven points by New Orleans lifted to 129 the total against Atlanta this season, bettering the old 14-game standard of 133, set by the Minnesota Vikings in 1969. The offensive explosion equaled Atlanta's best in almost 4 seasons. New Orleans had several opportunities to deny the Falcons the defensive record, but lost a fumble at the Atlanta 12, bogged down at the 29, missed a field goal try after reaching the 12 again and failed to capitalize on a fourth quarter fumble recovery at the Falcons' 31. Stanback scored on runs of 2 and 7 yards and his 129 yards on 22 carries was the third best ever by a Falcon runner.

Bartkowski connected with Secdrick Mclntyre on a 27-yard scoring pass in the third quarter and came back in the final period with a 5-yarder to rookie Billy Ryckman, his first NFL reception. Atlanta's other score came on a 17-yard run by Woody Thompson on which he bounced off several Saints defenders. New Orleans' only score, came in the final minute of the first half on a 13 yard pass from Archie Manning to Henry Childs, who set a club record with his ninth TD reception of the year. Manning, who left with an injury early in the second helf, fell 15 yards shy of reaching the 10,000 yard career mark in passing when he connected on seven of nine for 1 13 yards. Walden, a former Canadian Football League star, came to WSU last January after four seasons at Miami. A native of Aberdeen, Walden played fooball for the University of Wyoming, where he was named the most valuable player in 1959.

He spent two years with the Vancouver Lions in 1960-61 and the following two seasons with Calgary. For five years he was head coach at Amory High in Mississippi. He then spent four years as an assistant at Nebraska before joining the Miami staff, first as backfield coach for two years, then as defensive coordinator and linebacker coach. Walden was the unanimous choice of the WSU Athletic Council, Jankovich said. Hugh Campbell, head coach of the Edmonton Eskimos of the CFL, was the only person outside of the WSU coaching staff approached about the job, Jankovich said.

SPOKANE (AP) -Washington State University reached within its own coaching ranks Sunday to name Mississippian Jim Walden as its third head football coach in two years. The 39-year-old offensive backfield coach replaces Warren Powers, who has agreed to pay $55,000 to be released from his contract to take the head coaching job at the University of Missouri. Many WSU fans and members of the team were angered when Powers left after the Cougars notched a 6-5 record this year, the first winning season in five years. "You won't have trouble remembering my name," Walden vowed. "I intend to watch the next incoming freshman class graduate if at all possible." WSU Athletic Director Sam Jankovich said Walden would be required to sign a contract with restrictive clauses to prevent team hopping.

It will be a three-year contract with a fourth year clause, Jankovich said. But Walden was talking about staying as long as six STATISTICS Cardinal! Packers advance, 16 to 14 MILWAUKEE (AP) -Rookie David Whitehurst passed for 219 yards and a touchdown and cornerback Willie Buchanon scored and set up a field goal with two interceptions, leading the Green Bay Packers to a 16-14 National Football League victory over San Francisco Sunday. Whitehurst completed 17 of 22 passes, including three in a row for 55 yards on a first quarter drive. He capped the drive with a seven-yard touchdown toss to Rich McGeorge as the Packers (4-10) took the lead to stay at 9-7. The 49ers finished 5-9. Buchanon picked off a Jim Plunkett pass and raced 29 yards down the left sideline to score as the Packers led 16-7 less than three minutes before halftime.

Buchanon intercepted a pass on the game's third scrimmage play and returned 12 yards to the 49er 33, setting up a 27-yard field goal by Chester Marcol. The 49ers responded with a 75-yard, 17-play drive climaxed by a nine-yard touchdown pass from Plunkett to Gene Washington. Plunkett completed five of seven passes for 53 yards on the march. The 49ers closed to within 16-14 just over a minute before halftime as Wilbur Jackson scored on a 29-yard draw play. Plunkett passes of 19 yards to Paul Seal and 19 to Washington sustained the 71-yard drive.

SEATTLE (AP) -Quarterback Jim Zorn hit Steve Largent with a 15-yard touchdown pass with 52 seconds left to play to lift the Seattle Seahawks to a 20-19 National Football League victory over the Cleveland Browns Sunday.

The Seahawks, who began their winning march with 1:51 remaining, moved 80 yards in just three plays for the climactic TD play. A critical pass interference call against Cleveland's Ron Bolton on first down was good for a 52-yard gain to the Cleveland 28. Bolton was whistled for interferring on a Zorn pass intended for Largent.
