Now that they've got the kinks worked out, it's pretty doggone effective." Northern Iowa's offense isn't as well established.

O'Donnell beat out Stanford transfer Chris Berg for the starting quarterback job but has thrown only 37 passes in his college career. It also might take a couple of games for the offensive line to begin clicking. But the Panthers' defense is solid with linebacker Andre Allen leading the way. Allen earned All-America honors last season and was the Gateway Conference defensive player of the year. Booth said an offense has to keep him in mind on every play.

They're very experienced and confident about that defense." There's a lot of curiosity about Iowa State's defense. The Cyclones have junked their old 4-3 scheme in favor of a 3-4 and have co-defensive coordinators in Jon Fabris and Jimmy Burrow. They've taken over for Robin Ross, who resigned last winter to take a job at Western Washington. "It's really going to be a challenge for us because we haven't used this defense in any type of game situation, so I don't know what's going to happen," linebacker Jeff Cole said. "We've seen it work with other teams using it, but we've never used it ourselves.

I'm anxious to see what happens." Iowa State will be without two starters on offense. Running back Calvin Branch and split end James Brooks were suspended for the game for their role in a check forging scheme. Reserve defensive back Russell Johnson was suspended for the same reason. With Branch sitting, Walden should get a good look at two promising redshirt freshman backs Jahi Arnold and Ceoff Turner. Arnold will start.

Junior Jeff Simony, more of a pure passer than Haafke, Is the Cardinal quarterback. Damon Rickwa was a starter at wingback a year ago while Mike Stinger, a transfer from Homer, opens at split end. South Sioux graduated tight end Brett Richmond, now at Nebraska-Kearney, and his spot will be filled by 6-4, 195-pound Justin Fischer. The Cardinals bring back veterans Paul Lowry (6-0, 240) at center, Dan Lane (5-11, 240) at guard and Dane Wagner (6-6, 220) at tackle.

Lowry and Wagner double up as defensive tackles, while Rickwa Is the lone returning starter In the secondary. It was exactly two years ago Fri-day that Scott Baldwin was released into an outpatient program in Omaha following the Jan. 18, 1992, assault on a Lincoln woman. Three days later the Roselle, N.J., native was paralyzed from the waist down when he was shot while scuffling with Omaha police who tried to subdue him during a psychotic episode.

Baldwin, 24, later admitted he had stopped taking his court-ordered medication. Lancaster County District Judge Paul Merritt said the anniversary made him apprehensive, but he has seen no clear and convincing evidence that Baldwin will be a threat to society, "if and that's with capital letters if he continues to take medication for his mental illness." Doctors say that Baldwin suffers from schizo effective disorder. He was diagnosed as suffering a psychotic episode when he assaulted Gina Simanek outside her Lincoln apartment in January 1992, and again when he scuffled with Omaha police later that year.
