111 utj UK THE TAMPA TRIBUNE-TIMES, Sunday. February 17, 1985 15-D Jordan displays confidence in moving Bandits USFL i line did a great job all day," he said. "I had all the time In the world." Fellow quarterback John Reaves complimented Jordan, and Tampa Bay Coach Steve Spurrier was quick to note Jordan's Improvement In the, two preseason games. "Jimmy calmed down in the second half," Spurrier said. "We got him In there for the two-minute drill (at the end of the first half).

He missed a few early and overthrew once or twice. He made one good long throw." The only problem with that bomb a 60-yarder to quick wldeout Steve Carter was that it was fumbled Into the bands of Baltimore safety Jeff Delaney. "It was a post pattern," Jordan said. "I didn't really see what today," Jordan said in the winning locker room. "I played with a lot more confidence and everything was better than last week." Jordan couldn't move the Tampa Bay offense a week ago against the Generals, and he knew he played lousy.

They probably could have played all night, and the Bandits still wouldn't have scored. Saturday, Jordan led the team on a pair of second-half drives, capping one with a 1-yard plunge by Joel Blunk and the other with a 4-yard pass to Larry Brodsky at the edge of the end zone. True to Jordan's low-key style, he gave all the credit to Brodsky. "It was a great catch; the ball was high," he said. "Larry made a heck of a catch." Jordan, former Florida State quarterback, also had plenty of praise for his teammates In the trenches.

"The By NICK PUGLIESE Tribune Sports Writer CHARLOTTE, N.C The Jimmy Jordan who played the second half of Saturday's 28-26 win over the Baltimore Stars was different than the Jimmy Jordan who played the second half of last week's preseason opener. For one, the Jimmy Jordan who quarterbacked the Bandits at Charlotte's Memorial Stadium played with more swagger than the Jimmy Jordan who competed at Tampa Stadium in the Bandits' 21-7 win over New Jersey. This Jordan completed 13 of 23 passes for 178 yards and one touchdown. Sure, he made mistakes, but he also came up with several big plays to overcome a 20-14 Stars third-quarter lead. "I felt more comfortable out there One thing the Bandits are happy to see Is the end of the preseason.

The regular season gets under way on Saturday night at Tampa Stadium against the Orlando Renegades. "We wanted to go out there and give it a good game and get ready for the regular-season opener," said outside linebacker James Harrell. Nose guard Fred Nordgren, who seemed to be In the Stars' backfleld all afternoon, said he was satisfied the Bandits wrapped up the preseason on a solid note. "We were stunting up there, which is something we work on in practice," Nordgren said. "Being ahead, that gave us an advantage because we could predict when they were going to throw.

"I'm glad camp's over with. Let's get the season going." Jimmy Jordan completed 13 of 23 passes for 178 yards and a touchdown In the second half of Saturday's game. Bobby added the extra point A 49-yard field goal attempt by Franco with nine seconds left to play was short to preserve the victory for the Showboats.

Williams' touchdown at 10:01 of the first quarter was set up by a 49-yard pass to the two from Walter Lewis to Derrick Crawford. Herrera added a 29-yard field goal at 5:20 of the first quarter. In the second period Duncan booted a 28-yard field goal but the Bulls answered with Franco's field goal just before the half ended. Gamblers 20, Stallions 10 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Quarter-back Jim Kelly completed 15 of 24 passes for 156 yards and one touch- down as the Houston Gamblers de- feated the Birmingham Stallions.

Both teams challenged calls that went against them during the game by appealing to a supervising official who watched an Instant replay of the down on a TV monitor. The Stallions, in particular, ap- pealed a turnover that ended a key second-quarter drive deep in Houston territory. Both times the instant replay upheld the call by officials on the field. The USFL is experimenting with the replay backup In preaseason play to determine whether it should be adopted during the regular season. Unlike the previous exhibition at Memorial Stadium, which was plagued by coldand wet weather and drew less than 12,000 fans, the sun was shining and the temperature was in the low 50s for the Bandits-Stars tilt i The estimated crowd of 20,000 spent much of the afternoon chanting "We want a team," as it watched the Bandits top the Stars 28-26. The city's slogan to land a USFL team "Let's win a franchise" was plastered all over the 24.500-seat stadium, and a big USFL in red, white and blue letters was painted on the 50-yard line. The mayor of Charlotte and the governor of North Carolina were present as well as former NFL quarterback Roman Gabriel, who hopes to coach a Charlotte team. There were giveaways at the gates, such as painter's caps and Skoal Bandits snuff pouches. There even were skydivers who floated Into the stadium with the game ball.

USFL Commissioner Harry Usher spoke at halftlme, and gave prospective owner George Shlnn and the audience reason to cheer. "I am impressed with all of you," Usher said. "The USFL was built on a dream and I think Charlotte has been built with that same dream and enthusiasm. I hope you'll be hearing from us in the future." What are Charlotte's chances for landing an expansion franchise, or possibly getting a existing troubled franchise? No one knows for sure, especially in light of the USFL's problems. But Bandits Coach Steve Spurrier said as long as the stadium was enlarged, he'd be in favor of a team in Charlotte.

"Charlotte is an Ideal city for pro ball, and I am behind George Shlnn 100 percent," Spurrier said. "People In this area would support a team, no doubt about it This is a great area." Colllnsworth update. No, Cris Colllnsworth wasn't at Bandits From Page ID scores In three series In last week's 21-7 win over the New Jersey Generals. "The offensive line did a good Job, and the receivers caught all the balls." Reaves and the Bandits wasted no time putting points on the board as they took the opening klckoff 69 yards to the end zone. Tailback Gary Anderson accounted for 29 of the yards on a variety of runs and catches, but the score came on third-and-goal when Reaves hit wide receiver Eric Truvlllion with a 1-yard toss that found free safety Scott Woerner beat by a couple of steps.

"It was a simple out Truvlllion said. "It was a play-fake and a rollout and I guess they were fooled on the play." After the Bandits' defense forced the Stars to punt on their first series, a turnover gave Baltimore a cheap touchdown. Punter Sean Landeta got off a high kick, which return man Steve Carter tried to catch at his own 18-yard line. However, Carter fumbled the ball, then made matters worse by kicking It toward his own end zone where James Caver fell on It at the 1 and rolled over for a Stars touchdown. Place-klcker David Trout missed the extra-point because of a bad snap, so the Bandits still led 7-6 with 6:13 left In the first quarter.

Carter fumbled the ensuing klckoff, but Klrchbaum picked off Chuck Fuslna's first pass from the Tampa Bay 22 to stop that threat The Bandits then proceeded to move 92 yards In 10 plays for another score. This time, It was a 14-yard hookup between Reaves and tight end Marvin Harvey as outside linebacker George Cooper gave futile chase. Zenon Andrusyshyn's second-straight PAT gave the Bandits a 14-6 edge with 16 seconds left In the first quarter. With third-stringer Ron Sally quarterbacklng the Bandits and the Tampa Bay defense holding Baltimore In check, the game settled down to a punting duel. However, a 41-yard Andrusyshyn punt from his own end zone gave the Stars the ball at their 49 late in the first half.

Six plays later, ex-Michigan Panther Anthony Allen beat free safety Zac Henderson on a corner route and after a botched two-point play the Bandits' lead had been cut to 14-12 at the half. Stars Coach Jim Mora didn't think too much of the first half. "We didn't start out the game as we planned on offense or defense," Mora said. "In fact I didn't like anything about the first quarter, but it did get better." Like right away. The Stars staked their only lead of the afternoon as they took the third-quarter klckoff and drove 70 yards In seven plays with the finale a 32-yard pass from Fuslna to Scott Fitzkee, who burned cornsr-back Jeff George.

A two-point pass from Fuslna to Willie Collier gave Baltimore a 20-14 advantage. That didn't last long, though, as Jordan led Tampa Bay 63 yards In 11 plays to put the Bandits ahead for good. Joel Blunk scored the TD on a 1-yard plunge with 4:13 remaining In the third quarter. "It was a real pleasure to come back to Carolina and play," said Blunk, who played his college ball at Duke, a two-hour drive from Charlotte. "I would have to rate this game as a high for a preseason game." The Bandits added to their lead as Jordan hit wldeout Larry Brodsky 'with a 4-yard TD pass with 8:27 left But the Stars, with backup Tim Rlordan at quarterback, came back with a seven-play, 69-yard drive, capped by Rlordan's 26-yard TD pass to Caver as cornerback Bobby Futrell was nailed for pass Interference.

"I saw his hand go up for the ball, and I just hit him too early," said Futrell. One of FutreU's secondary buddies, strong safety Doug Beaudoln, made sure the Stars didn't tie the game as he batted away Rlordan's two-point pass for Herbert Harris. Jordan and Co. then killed the final 5:42 on the clock to assure the Bandits of a victory. Saturday's game, and it's not certain when and If he'll report for practice.

Ralph Campbell, the Bandits' director of business operations, said the team had not heard from the Insurance company that is checking out Colllnsworth's physical forms, and he added they may not hear anything until Monday. If the Insurance company gives Its thumbs up then, the lanky wide receiver could be at Tuesday's workout What In the world Is that? That's what many in the crowd must have been thinking when the Bandits went Into their "Emory Henry Shift" on their second series In the first quarter. The unusual formation, which Tampa Bay used In the Memphis game at Tampa Stadium last year, has the tackles split wide with the wide receivers while only one back lines up behind the quarterback. The Bandits gained 18 yards on three plays with the shift before putting it away for the afternoon, which probably made linebacker Sam Mills happy. Mills was waving and pointing when the shift reared Its strange head.

"The or 'Emory ft Henry caught them off guard," said quarterback John Reaves. "I kept waiting for a semblance of a defensive set so I could know what to Leading the cheers. Bandits guard Chuck Pitcock Is an emotional player, and he even whipped the crowd Into a "Bandit" "Ball" frenzy In the second half. Bandit coaches reportedly were not amused. Hello, hello, hello The headphones in the Bandits' coaching booth never worked Saturday.

They used walkie-talkies in the first half, and gave up In the second half. Here's Dave. Public relation directors usually don't get mentioned In post-game quote sheets, but the Bandits' Dave Jovanovlc did Saturday. When asked why the team didn't punt in the second half, he said "We move the ball we score." NICK PUGLIESE Boys' Soccer Van Dlest and sophomore fullback Bob Block were successful In controlling Clearwater's potent scoring tandem of Scott Tassone and Bobby Bula throughout the Panther keeper Jason Miller continued his spectacular play, making several saves of Tornadoes shots, Including a diving save of a Tassone shot in the 14th minute. "We were trying to play catch up ball and we're not used to playing that way." Tornadoes Coach Jim Campas said.

"We couldn't finish our attacks tonight but Plant did and that's why they beat us. The Tornadoes (16-3), have not faced as physical nor as aggressive a team as Plant "My players wanted this one really bad," Plant Coach Bob Morgan said.
