CALM AFTER THE STORM thunderstorm that lashed down fell in the area during the Pennsylvania-American Water UMW decides today whether to call strike CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) The United Mine Workers will decide today whether to authorize a strike for 1,500 West Virginia and Pennsylvania miners at a subsidiary of Bethlehem Steel union officials said.

The UMW had set a deadline for today on whether to strike six BethEnergy Mines Inc. opera-lions. A strike would affect BOD West Virginia miners. "There were meetings up until Friday," said Bob Phalen, president of Charleston-based UMW District 17. "We're just going to have to wait and see what happens." The union had set a strike deadline for June 24 but extended that until today after negotiators made progress during several days of intensive meetings two weeks ago.

'There will be some kind of an agreement or there will be a definite date set for a selective strike," said David Bryant, president of UMW Local 633 in Van. The dispute between BethEnergy and the UMW centers on a difference in the definition of "coal lands" and "coal mines." The language is used in provisions that give union miners job opportunities at operations owned by BethEnergy but not necessarily operated by the company. An interim contract agreement signed by the UMW and Bethlehem's coal unit in 1967 covered the company's "coal mines" but said nothing about "coal lands," which is the language used in all other UMW agreements.
