"You and I know a lot about football, probably more than a movie critic knows about movies, but we couldn't have prepared Washington to play Miami in the Super Bowl.

The same goes for movie critics. There's no critic who can tell me how to execute my craft as an actor. They don't know enough about acting. Now, if I go to my peers and they say, 'OK, you did this or then I'm going to listen, but for her to say anything about me is ludicrous and a joke. By LIZ SMITH "THE OSCAR is a pagan rite, after all; a night when the tribe comes out to bay at the moon and drink the heady waters of fame. The young ones come to nurse at the nipple of glamour; the old ones come to bathe in the golden light and reaffirm their manufactured identities. The most realistic of them see it for what it is. Coming off the Oscar stage in the '50s. Joan Crawford heard a fellow star murmur.

'You looked wonderful up there on the Crawford pulled at her diamonds and hissed: 'That's not me; that's Joan The quote is Peter H. Brown's from his book. "The Real Oscar." HOWEVER well or ill Sir Rich ard Attenborough's "Gandhi" does for Columbia Pictures, it won't alter India's new pride and self-awareness, fomented by the making, reception and success of this film epic. Already in the works (though not by Attenborough and friends) is a movie to be titled "Nehru." Some think the story of India's first prime minister (his daughter, Indira, rules to this day) will be every bit as impressive as the story of Gandhi. NEW YORK magazine celebrates its 15th anniversary this week, but the article therein to rivet both the quick and the dead of what passes for "society" in NYC is Julie Baumgold's "Lunch at Le Cirque." Quite cleverly, the writer has left in all the dish and dirt but kept most of it from being actually attributed to anybody named Jerome Zipkin, Alice Mason, Barbara Walters, Caro line or Reinaldo Herrera, Gloria Vanderbilt, Arianna Stassi-nopoulos, Roy Cohn, Ann or Roone Arledge, Alecko Papamarkou, and hundreds of other dropped names.

Lots of fun for all of us with our noses pressed up against the glass. Speaking of frozen noses en glace, hostess Mason's next private "do" in her apartment will be May 23 for the Jimmy Carters. Whenever I broil meat in my electric oven, the smoke alarm goes off. I found that putting a plastic shower cap over the alarm while I am in the kitchen preparing dinner will prevent it from going off. Just make sure it is removed when the oven is turned off. Shirley Lipkin I know the problem with a smoke alarm too close to the kitchen, especially if you like meat well done.

Covering the alarm with a shower cap sounds good provided you remember to remove it immediately after you finish cooking. And here's a good reminder: After you cover the alarm, place a book, a telephone directory, a chair or some obvious object on the floor directly under the alarm. Anyone who sees it (just don't fall over it) is bound to remember why it's there and will remove the cover. While on the subject of smoke alarms, they are life savers, literally, and I hope every home has at least, one, if not more. Heloise Dear Heloise: I do a lot of substituting at schools and have to go to different buildings.

One day I was caught without my plastic rain cap. What did I do? I put two paper towels in between the folds of my thin head scarf and arrived at my destination in good shape. It really saved my hair style. Love your column. Mildred Hutchens From Page ID year to go with the "Spirit of Tampa Bay" campaign? Well, it has begun to wear a little thin, so Channel 8 news consultant Diana Richardson went back to the original composer, Frank Gari, a New York musician who has done a lot of work for ABC, and got him to punch it up.

Gari added a few horns, a drum beat and increased the tempo. The result is that the "Spirit of Tampa Bay" no longer sounds like elevator music. It's 'Dance Fever' time The producers of "Dance Fever" will be in town this week and next to hold dance competitions for a chance to go to Hollywood and appear on the nationally syndicated program. Couples interested in participating must qualify at one of two preliminary auditions Tuesday and Thursday at The Great Doctors (formerly Robiconti's) 2701 E. Fowler Ave.

WXFL branches out The nip-and-tuck ratings war between WXFL and WTSP for the No. 2 spot in this market is sure to heat up this month when WXFL opens its new Pinellas County News Bureau. Channel 8 Station Manager Frank DeTillio said that within the next 30 days, WXFL will open offices somewhere in St. Petersburg (they're searching for a place now).

"We've always had a reporter there, but now we'll have an office and bigger staff," he said. WXFL is sending former assignment editor and traffic-control supervisor Rod Challenger to be the bureau chief. Reporting under him will be Janet Gauss and Neil Vicino. The Channel 8 branch office will have three photographers, Mark Roberts, Ilene Safron and Mike Ahrens. DeTillio said this move and others including moving Gayle Sierens to 1 1 p.m.

and canceling the 5:30 p.m. news are based on extensive research that WXFL has conducted in recent months. He said more changes will be forthcoming. DeTillio would not comment on speculation that Channel 8 might expand its noon news to an hour with Bob Hite as the anchor. In recent years, WXFL has lost some Pinellas viewers while the St.

Petersburg-based WTSP has gained viewers. Now that Channel 8 is invading Channel 10's stomping grounds, look for more Pinellas County stories on WXFL. The Walt Belcher connection Your friendly neighborhood TV critic turns up on "Carousel," a weekly talk show on WUSF, Channel 16. Host Andrea McDaniel grills me on what it's like to be a TV critic in this market. And I get to sound off about local TV news and children's programming.
