MONTANA STANDARD. BUTTE, TUESDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 16, "1937. WFIFORGET The mp knta of Detymtn', the frosts of June ikall fret; ky tlxiTynt'rerrumtvT. the'day loaf 1 vTni I PRESS ASSOCIATION READ; THIS. In following an in- JT'cnipus maneuver'on the part ot his youug wife, J.Snet, Joel Payii- tcr, second-rate -groiclKay actor, makes screen history in the course of eight months.

Fame and fortune- are one outstanding picture in which Joel plays an important character part. He obtalrted the role because Janet cultivated right people and Vernon Chester, leading director. Denied a baby because the studio frowns on domestic notes in building.up Joel as the popular American- lover, Janet finds happiness eluding her, despite everything money can buy; because she has nothing. more to do. Janet discovers that $3,000 a week melts rapidly living as they now do.

After buying group "theater in Cape Cod as a lark, Joel about it. Janet goes east atone for a visit. Because Joel Is not with her, by the Janet has reached New York, it is widely rumored that a divorce was imminent. Janet and Martha, an old friend, BO to Cape Cod to see the Little Theater and stop with Mnry Charleston, wardrobe mistress and scenic designer, of the theater. After a prolonged stay in New England.

Janet receives a telegram from'Joel urging her to return to Hollywood at once. NOW GO ON WITH THE STOBY: CHAPTER 24. Janet said, "Martha, I've liad a wire from Joel; He wants me to come home "Well, that's no reason for you to look so worried. Now, if lie didn't want you to come home, that'd be different," Martha said reasonably. If Martha had hoped that her would' banish the cloud from Janet's she met with no success.

"Martha, I'm a little worried. He Eays in his telegram that 'I'm not lo believe any 'silly What do you suppose that means?" Martha was up on her newspaper columns. She hesitated only a moment. Then she said. "Well now, dear; you ought to know whal Hollywood is by now.

You brush your teeth without some one of those writers thinking you're doing ib-because, you to bedazzle someone of the opposite sex They pry into everything and first thing you know they've manufactured something that isn't "I know all that," Janet said patiently. "But do you have idea what rumors these are? You've got an evasive look In your eye and I suspect you." "I don't know anything except that well, there was that little item about Joel taking' that Gries girl-to dinncr-at what's that place? 1'he Truckerdero?" "Tlie Trocodero," Janet correctec absently. She was thinking. There had been Lisa's letter, Joe himself had said that he had been lo a party given by Carol at her Malibu Beach house. But then was Ipaying opposite her in a picture.

It was only natural tha he would lie seen with her. Except He said he'd been to the boxing bouts with her. Lisa said she liad been surprised to see hin at the Plovers' with her. She acts as though she owns him Janet felt suddenly as though.shi had been hit by, a very large, verj devastating cyclone. She sat dowi on Ihe side of Martha's bed.

Little things that by thcmseivc, were of no moment added up to a total that rather took her -breatl away. It mightn't have been total of any Importance except tha Carol.Griest was prirt of it. Littl things Janet had heard regarding the star before she left Hollywood began to -assume proportions in he mind. Carol's unscrupulous nnnexa tion of the man she wanted, Carol' insisting that her studio get Joe to play opposite -her; Carol' agreeing to give Joel equal billing. "Martha." Janet said, "It looks a if one of those well-known crises i coming into my life." "What crisis?" Martha aslXd calmly.

"It looks like another woman." "Husbands don't usually run to their wives when it is another woman, child." "Mine would," Janet said conclusively. "As long as he does, you've nothing to worry about." "No, I don't suppose I now." "Meet trouble when It comes to you, Janet. Don't go out to welcome it." not going Janet rose and went to the window. You'aren't-going to be any dlffer- Walt and see." Ill wait and see but we aren't ike" other young people. Out in California bur Mives aren't like the ives of young people anywhere else.

Everything we do Is exaggerated. t's a -make-believe world that out of nothing and (re? quently collapses into nothing." That was the first time that Janet had ever said, those things to Martha. "Most of us out there were once xior. Suddenly we' are rich. Marha, I used to spend 50 cents a day three meals 'for two people.

Today, my dinner parties cost as nuch as $500 is ike that. It's all out of proportion. are wars going on in the world. -People are born and die. Great discoveries are made, books are written, skyscrapers are built, careers are made or ruined.

all around us, yet everything is trans- ated into picture terms. If it can't be. it is not recognized. It lust isn't happening if it doesn't fit into the narrow confines of our little, tinseled circle!" Martha cleared her throat but Janet didn't hear her. "How can'you expect normalcy in world that trades on emotions? Everything is emotional Register Register Joy! Emote! Suffer ior the camera! What have you got left when it is over? Fatigue synthetic emotions left over from the day working before the camera.

It's got to affect your point of view and it does! "I wanted to have a baby. I thought that was one way to give some substance to our lives. The we couldn't. It wasn't a good idea because it would affect Joel's box office draw with the Then why not assert your right, dear? Ho studio could tell me what I was going, to do." Martha said stoutly. The fire of Janet's denunciation had died" down.

"Yes, it would, Martha, if your husband was in my husband's Joel spent, too many years of his life not, knowing where the next penny was coming from. Now we don't know where the last one went. But I intend matters to be different when I go back. We're going to save something out of this ngainst the day when Joel tires of it. 1 Then we'll be free.

We'll have our own lives to lead then!" When Janet said that, she realized that if they had their own lives to live" independently of Joel's picture work, they would have something that she could -not oven see. For there was nothing that Joel ever said' he wanted to'do. Unlike Janet, there was no future for him. He had long since stopped speaking of what he wanted to do in the theater. He was a movie nclor now; the avllst had disappeared.

She realized as she had once before, nnd that was only an houi after they had been married, thai she.knew little.of the man she hac married. She knew his faults and his virtues, his reactions good and bad the things he liked to eat, the thousands of intimate things a wife knows about her husband. But she did not know what was behind the curtain of the present in his mind If he had a philosophy of living, It was foreign to her because was unknown to her. "I'd better start packing," she said, "and send a wire to Joel J'l surprise him. I'll fly out." (To Be Continued.) BITES ED FOR TlfpNTS 'hilipsburg Friends Mourn and Reuben Conn.
