8-C THE TAMPA TRIBUNE, Friday, December 17, 1982 Tampa Bay Bowns Thursday's Results Lyle to coach Bandits defensive backs Downs Form chart The naming of former University of Tampa player and University of Florida assistant coach Charlie Lyle completes the coaching staff of the Bandits. i1 wnii immmmm'mmmm'mmmmmmimmmrw I' 8 i several colleges, will be a part-time coach with the Bandits. "I coached the quarterbacks at Florida when Charlie Lyle had the secondary," said Spurrier. "We had a lot of fun working together and that's important. That's why I'm so happy with this staff; I believe we get along well and that goes a long way toward being successful." Lyle, who entered the business world in January, 1981, is excited about his reunion with Bailey, who he roomed with when they were football players at the University of Tampa.

"Charlie and I talked about what we would call our coverages the other day and a lot of our terminology was the same," said Lyle. "Defensive backs, of course, play a big part in professional football. But the secondary and underneath coverage that Charlie and I will be taking care of usually is most successful because of an excellent rush, say, like the Dallas Cowboys have." However, Lyle hasn't been a Bandits' coach long enough to get into anything too technical. Besides, he has a lot of catching up to do and is missing numerous diagrams that might have made his transition easier. He disgarded them when he said good-bye to football.

For good. He thought. know, Steve's kind of a laid-back guy and sometimes people underestimate him, but he knows exactly what's going on." Still, it wasn't until Lyle travelled from his home in Orlando to the ongoing USFL meetings at the Tampa Marriott that he was convinced he should accept Spurrier's offer to coach the Bandits' defensive backs. "I came over to the Marriott and started walking around the lobby and I saw George Allen and Red Miller and Chuck Fairbanks and my gosh, I said to Steve 'you've got your last I realized this league has been well-thought-out." Lyle, according to Spurrier, completes a four-assistants staff that includes Charlie Bailey (defensive coordinator and linebackers); John Rauch (running backs); Barry Wilson (defensive line), and Marty Gal-breath (offensive Wilson, who has coached at Georgia Tech the last six years, and Galbreath, a Wake Forest assistant from 1978-82, joined the Bandits this week. Jack Burns, a former assistant at By TOM FORD Tribune Sports Writer Nearly two years ago, Charlie Lyle resigned as defensive backs coach at the University of Florida.

He was entering the business world. For good. He thought. He thought so until this week, when a friend, Steve Spurrier, who also happens to be head coach of the Tampa Bay Bandits, talked Lyle into becoming an assistant coach in the United States Football League. But Spurrier's mission wasn't easy.

"Steve and I talked three weeks ago," said Lyle Thursday. "I was a little apprehensive about getting back into coaching. I didn't know very much about the Bandits or the USFL. Sometimes, when you think of anything other than the NFL, you think of the WFL," a short-lived pro football league of the mid-1970s. "But," continued Lyle, "I should have known up front that if Steve was getting involved with something, he must have checked it out.

You Charlie Lyle fs back in business of football again. "I left 19 years of accumulated football Information at the University of Florida," said Lyle. "I didn't think I'd ever need it I didn't think I'd ever coach again. "I guess I'll ask (Gator Coach) Charley Pell if Ican come up there and get It back." Big bucks. Michigan Panthers Jim Stanley left an Carver's success story continuing Post Time' 1 p.m. By Philip O'Hara O'Hara's Selections Tampa Bay Bucs' rookie running back Melvin Carver may start Sunday in place of James Owens. Hannah (calf bruise) still are unable to work out the game could send two old Clemson buddies into a headlong clash. Bucs linebacker Jeff Davis and Bills receiver Perry Turtle roomed together throughout the Clemson careers.

"That got started during the high school All-Star game in North Carolina," Davis said. "It's been a couple of weeks since we talked with each other on the phone but he'll probably call me this week. We keep in touch because we got real close. We're like brothers. Last year he asked me if we ever, played against each other would I hit him as hard as I usually hit I told him, 'yeah, because if I slip up you aren't going to just fall down and not score a touchdown against me'." Tuttle could start for Frank Lewis, who is questionable with a back injury players will receive their "Money Now" bonus checks under the new 5-year contract Jan.

3 not much has been heard of the Jerry Eckwood Shoes and Gifts From Santa project this year because Eckwood is rehabilitating from back surgery. But, Eckwood says the Salvation Army has distributed 2,900 pairs of shoes to needy children and "we will crank it up again next year." Eckwood is progressing nicely but won't resume running until after the first of the year those face masks provided by Zinkwazi of Eugene, which the Bucs wore experimentally in Sunday's frigid game in New York, worked so well Equipment Manager Frankie Pupello reports six other teams are ordering them. Pupello said the manufacturer will modify the masks to cover more of the face and will begin to produce them in team colors the Bucs are pleased that one of their ball boys, Kevin Mercer, made The Tribune's All-County team. By JIM SELMAN Assistant Sports Editor If the clock strikes 12 Sunday for Buccaneers rookie running back Melvin Carver, he wants to be certain the shoe fits. It could develop into a Cinderella story because Carver likely will start at tailback against the Buffalo Bills in place of James Owens, who has a sprained ankle, Owens was improved Thursday and did some running, but it is too early to determine his availability for Sunday, trainer Tom Oxley said.

For Carver, the world of football is turning around for the second time within eight months. The April draft left him high and dry at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas but his agent worked out a nice free agent's deal for him with the Bucs. Carver impressed his coaches right away hen training camp opened in July and kept right on the move in the preseason, scoring on a io-yard run against Philadelphia and winding up with 163 yards on 41 carries plus 85 yards on 10 pass receptions for the four exhibitions. He had tarts at tailback against Houston and Washington and beat the odds by making the team. But then came the players' strike and Carver languished for 57 days not knowing exactly what to do.

Like other rookies, he was caught in the middle in the players vs. management dispute. Seeing spot duty in the regular season. Carver has carried only 15 times for 56 yards and caught one pass for 12 yards. But he hasn't had an opportunity like this one Sunday.

"They haven't told me I'm starting but it looks that way," Carver said. "I'm excited about it. I want to get in there and do well. I intend to do Sell." A skeptic might think a rookie still green with inexperience has rocks in his head to be eager to fjlay against the Buffalo Bills, i After all, the Bills lead the NFL in overall pefense, allowing 96 yards rushing and 125 passing per game. i That means in an average game against them, ja running back carrying 20 times can expect to jgain around 60 yards at the most while taking a jbeating.

i Carver doesn't expect it to be easy. "Looking at the film," he said, "they have a very good defense. But that just makes the challenge more exciting for me. It makes me want to go in and do more." Although he Is a fullback, Carver has some of the qualities necessary to play either backfield position. At 5-11, 210, he's strong enough for fullback but quick enough for tailback.

Interestingly, he shared the fullback starting duties with one of his best friends, Ray Crouse, at Nevada-Las Vegas. "They felt that our talent was so equal that it would be better to share the position rather than have one guy sitting on the bench," Carver said. "We both knew what was going on, so we accepted it." Carver started seven games in 1981. Customarily, Carver will toss and turn in his sleep Saturday night but otherwise seems to have his emotions under control. "It is my nature to take things as they come," he said.

"I can't say that my emotions have ever gotten away from me. Mentally, I go all out in almost everything I do. And most of the time that is the way I practice. "As I get myself mentally ready for this game I think about what I want to do and what I want to try to do. Sure, I think about running for 100 yards.

The night before, I'll think about the game a lot. I'll go to sleep early Friday night to get plenty of sleep because I know I'll have trouble sleeping Saturday night. "I'll carry the football to bed with me Saturday night" BUCSHOTS: The Buffalo game will not be televised in the Bay Area Sunday because it did not sell out by 4 p.m. Thursday. Indeed, it fell around 5,000 short.
