-Senior quarterback Silas FlueUen became Wayne State's all-time completions leader Saturday, passing for 290 yards and three touchdowns, to lead Wayne State in a 41-0 win at MSU-Moorhead. The game was the Northern Sun Conference opener for both teams. With the Silas win, Wayne State moves to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in league play while MSU Moorhead slips to l-l overall and o-l in theNSIC. Wayne State started the game slowly, leading just 3-0 with 3:22 left to play in the second quarter, but the Wildcats scored three touchdowns to close the first half to build a 24-0 lead. WSC never looked back.

"It took us a while to get started, but once we did we got on a roll and it was a fun game," said Wildcats head coach Dan McLaughlin. Wayne State recorded 468 yards of total offense while holding MSU Moorhead to 224 yards. The Wildcats had 178 yards rushing and 290 yards passing. "Wayne State is definitely a play-off caliber team," MSU football coach Damon Tomeo said. "We played a really strong first quarter but we missed some key opportunities and didn't execute when we needed to.

Our team needs to continue to play strong for a complete four quarters to become a stronger team, right now they are getting that experience." Fluellen completed 21 of 32 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns and became Wayne State's all-time leader in pass completions. The senior now has 580 career pass completions, surpassing the previous school record of 578 held by Jaime Jones from 1996 to 1999. r-' BYU stuns Oklahoma BY JAIME ARON 77 Associated Press ARLINGTON, Texas -Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford stood helplessly on the sideline, wearing a T-shirt, a sling and a towel around his neck. All he could do was watch as his Oklahoma Sooners lost their chance for a perfect season and the BYU Cougars launched their bid to become the latest BCS busters from the Mountain West. Max Hall threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to wide-open McKay Jacobson in the back of the end zone with 3:03 left, giving No.

20 BYU a 14-13 victory over No. 3 Oklahoma on Saturday night. The Sooners' last hope to recover ended when Tress Way came up short on a 54-yard field goal with 1:23 left. BYU players exchanged flying chest bumps right away, then celebrated wildly when their upset was complete, a stunning end to the first college football game and first regular-season game -ever played at the nearly $1.2 billion Cowboys Stadium. One Saturday into the college football season and already the national title race and Heisman Trophy race have been thrown for a loop.

Cougars fans made up only a small portion of the crowd of 75,437, but they all stuck around long after this one. The team stayed on the field so they could all enjoy it together, cheerleaders waving flags and players pointing to friends and family in the crowd. Hall's uncle, former Cowboys quarterback Danny White, was expected to be among them. "I don't know if we can measure it now," said BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall, who opened his fifth season with his biggest victory and one of the best in program history. "All I can say is I'm very proud of this football team." The Cougars won at least 10 games each of the last three years, helping regain some of their national profile, but they'd lost 12 straight to ranked non-conference foes.

Their last such win was over No. Miami in 1990. "This is unbelievable, playing a game like this, having a chance to drive down the field and score," Hall said. Hall was 26 of 38 for 329 yards and two touchdowns. The numbers that matter most: a 16-play, 78-yard drive that included convert -ing a fourth-and-4 and throwing the winning touchdown after being shoved back from the 2 on a delay-of-game penalty.

Hall was intercepted twice and sacked four times, but this win could vault him to the fringe of the Heisman talk especially with Bradford's status unknown. NO. 4 USC 56, SAN JOSE STATE 3 LOS ANGELES (AP) Matt Barkley passed for 233 yards after a slow start to his Southern California debut, and the Trojans' fleet of tailbacks ran for six touchdowns. Barkley, the first non-redshirt freshman to start a season opener at USC, shook off a rocky first quarter to go 15 for 19 with no interceptions. He was at his best handing off to his fellow Trojans, who pounded the Spartans with six consecutive TD drives after trailing 3-0 early in the second quarter.

NO. 15 GEORGIA TECH 37, JACKSONVILLE STATE 17 ATLANTA (AP) Jonathan Dwyer ran for two touchdowns, and Georgia Tech had 335 yards rushing. The Yellow Jackets rested many of their starters in the second half of the opener with Clemson visiting Bobby Dodd Stadium on Thursday. Dwyer, the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year, scored on the first play from scrimmage, taking an option pitch for a 74-yard touchdown. NO.

21 NORTH CAROLINA 40, THE CITADEL 6 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) T.J. Yates threw two touchdown passes in the decisive first half for North Carolina. Ryan Houston had touchdown runs of 5 and 3 yards, and Shaun Draughn rushed for 118 while helping the Tar Heels roll up 375 yards total offense. They had a 261-30 advantage on the ground.

Da'Norris Searcy returned a late punt 77 yards for a touchdown. Yates was 9 of 20 for 114 yards in three quarters, with scoring passes of 18 yards to Johnny White and 21 yards to Greg Little for the Tar Heels. NO. 23 NOTRE DAME 35, NEVADA 0 SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) Jimmy Clausen threw for four touchdowns, including passes of 70 and 88 yards to Michael Floyd, to lead Notre Dame.

Clausen started the game by completing 10 of 11 passes for 184 yards and three touchdowns, highlighted by the 70-yard pass to Floyd. He later bettered that with the 88-yard score. The junior quarterback finished 15 of 18 passing for 315 yards. NO. 25 KANSAS 49, N.

COLORADO 3 LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Todd Reesing sparked slow-starting Kansas with two rushing touchdowns, then passed for two more before the biggest home crowd in school history. Reesing, who has virtually rewritten his school's passing records, took a seat on the bench midway through the fourth quarter with the Jay-hawks holding a 35-3 lead. He hit 13 of 20 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns and scored on runs of 2 and 13 yards. STATE COLLEGE, Pa.

(AP) DaryU Clark threw for 353 yards and three touchdowns, and Perm State celebrated coach Joe Paterno's return to the sideline with a 31-7 win against Akron. A tenacious defense overwhelmed the Zips' spread attack, holding Akron to 186 yards of total offense. Akron didn't record a first down until the third quarter, with Penn State leading by 31. The Nittany Lions scored on their opening drive on a 5 yard run by Evan Royster and never looked back. Graham Zug's leaping 19-yard touchdown catch gave Penn State a 31-point cushion just before halftime.

Clark threw for 254 yards in the first half alone, a school record. NO. 6 OHIO STATE 3L ARMY 27 COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Brian Rolle intercepted a potential 2-point conversion in the closing minutes and returned it for two points the other way and Ohio State hold off pesky Navy. A crowd of 105,092 the largest ever to see the Buckeyes open a season sat in stunned silence after the Midshipmen scored twice in just over 4 minutes to cut a 29-14 deficit to two points with 2:23 left in the game. Navy went for the conversion and the tie, but Rolle stepped in front of Ricky Dobbs' pass and rumbled up the sideline to preserve the win in the Midshipmen's first trip to Ohio Stadium since 1931 and keep the luster on next week's showdown between the Buckeyes and No.

4 Southern Cal. NO. 9 OKLAHOMA STATE 24, NO. 13 GEORGIA 10 STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) Zac Robinson threw two touchdown passes to star receiver Dez Bryant and also scored on a quarterback sneak as Oklahoma State proved itself deserving of its highest preseason ranking ever.

The Cowboys capitalized on a fourth quarter fumble by new Georgia starting quarterback Joe Cox to seal the season-opening win on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Robinson to Bryant. The two also hooked up on an impressive 46-yard score in the first half that got Oklahoma State's offense going after a sloppy start. NO. 1 FLORIDA 62, CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 3 GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) Tim Tebow accounted for two touchdowns and Chris Rainey and Jeff Demps had scoring runs as No.

Tide down Hokies, 34-24 Iowa: Hawkeyes survive Northern Iowa FROM PAGE Bl starters from a team that reached the national semifinals last season. The experience showed as Northern Iowa put the ultimate scare into its in-state rival.

"We talked about Appalachian State during the week. I'm not sure everybody hears that all the time," said Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz about Michigan's famous home loss to the Mountaineers in 2007. Ricky Stanzi had 242 yards passing for the Hawkeyes, who trailed 13-10 before Stanzi found tight end Tony Moeaki for a 6-yard touchdown with 13:18 left in the game. Hallgren's 39 -yard field goal with 4:26 left brought Northern Iowa within 17-16. Pat Grace, who threw for 270 yards, then methodically marched the Panthers all the way from their own 8 yard line with 2:14 left -going 6 for 7 passing on the final drive to set up Hallgren's potential The Hawkeyes gained just 104 yards of total offense in the first two quarters.

The running back tandem of Paki O'Meara and Adam Robinson rushed for 79 yards on 24 carries in Iowa's first game minus Doak Walker Award winner Shonn Greene hardly encouraging for the Hawkeyes. Northern Iowa outgained Iowa 354-329 and went 7 for 17 on third down. With Iowa's offense stuck in the mud, the Panthers drove 91 yards on 15 plays to take a 10-3 lead and quiet a sold-out crowd save for patches of purple-clad Northern Iowa supporters who made the 70 -mile drive from Cedar Falls. "We've built this program to a level so we can come to places like this and play head-to-head," Northern Iowa coach Mark Farley said. "We should have won this thing hands down."
