THE FAIR TKIAU Monday evening's telegrams brought tis the astounding intelligence that the trial of Mrs. Fair terminated iu a verdict of acquittal. Thut twelve nun could be louna in aniornia either ioolish or wicked enough to refuse to punish criminal guilty of so heinous a crime is both astounding and alarming. The only logical conclusion to be drawn from this unexampled proceeding is that hen any adulteress or mistress of a married man finds that her victim is beginning to tire of her and desires to return to the wife of his bosom as his truest friend and best companion, then the abandoned harlot has a right to kill her former because he ceases to break the laws of God and man and clings to his lawful wife in preference to a courtesan. It is not worth while to relate or comment upon the connection between the unfortunate Mr.

Crittenden and the woman who slew him or the circumstances surrounding the homicide they are too well known but with them fresh iu the minds of all, who cannot but feel that the absolute iinpotcney of the law to reach great criminals is a misfortune fraught with the gravest consequences? No family in the land is sufn if the evils of the temptress have led the husband and father astray. I'or him there is no repentance; no return to the forsaken paths of virtue; for if he does abjure his sin and bid the lewd woman retire, he does so at the peril of his life; fur his discarded mistress may, like Mrs. Fair, deliberately slay the dupe who had slipped or was slipping from her grasp, and a jury of her countrymen will say that she is guilty of no crime, sending her forth to seek another paramour and perhaps commit another murder. What must the wife of the murdered man think of the laws of her country that permit un unchaste woman to first eutntp her husband into the toils of sin and the moment he attempts to escape to murder him and still be declared innocent of any crime let this has been done in a country that professes Christianity, boast ing laws to protect the innocent and pun ish the evil-doer. How imperfectly this is carried into effect the verdict in the Fair trial will be a constant witness.

"LET IS HAVE AN IIONEST DEAL." This is the somewhat grotesque but pointed title of an article in the San Francisco Chronicle, in which that paper contends that the people of that city shall have a fair chance to express their wishes on the railway subsidies and the city government generally. This was all right enough, but it struck us as rather singular thut the Chronicle wished to confine the fair dealing to the limited area of the city nnd county of Sau Francisco. What is good as a general principle of popular government would apply with equal force to national affairs as well as municipal. Why can we not have a little of the square deal applied to the latter? Why is it that the Administration is allowed to exercise the mighty power of place, backed by the U. S.

Treasury, to secure the election of a man who has shown himself incompetent in every way to fill the great office with which he has unfortunately been entrusted? Why cannot American citizens be allowed to exercise their privileges as electors without the interference and intimidation of Federal officials and Federal bayonets? Why are the lladical Governors of certain States allowed to appoint all the officers of registry or election, to control the registry and re fuse or accept qualified voters just as whim, interest or prejudice may dictate? short, why the course recommended by a Kadical journal as fitting to be pur sued in a municipal election should not be applicable to that for the highest of fice in the gift of the people is hard to II. Hero is the advice of the Chronicle: Eflctjtapliw gijspatduss. The great secret of the str.in.;th of the organization, is its intelligence; its Btrongholds are in its schoo nouses ana cnurcnes. Li'ioclie Review. This is news indeed.

We thought its strongest hold was on the National Treasury and several million of ignorant. negroes, who do not possess intelligence enough to know thut they are tlia dupes of the Radical rogues who lea 1 them At the same time, as the Radicals claim by implication to engross all the iutelli gence, schools and churches in the country, we cannot but regret that they did not apply the first to some oth purpose than to teaching in their schools nothing but '-addition, division and silence," according to the approve! metnocr, and last that ttiev failed to learn that cruelty, hatred malice and theft are not enumerated in the list of christian Yirtnes. Judgin from the treatment of the South for the past seven years, and the general steal ing that has been going on for a longi period, we cannot but think that tl: Radicals have not been regular church attendants, or else their ministers must have been of the Parson Brownlow order, The Home Truths that Mr. Greeley has been telling in his late speeches an Hoy the Grant radicals horribly. Thev cannot deny the facts that old Horace in ists upon putting before the people so they yent their Bpite in ridicule and abuse.

This will not win, and they know it, and it ia that conviction that gets their dander up so furiously. The Presi dent and his footmen (we do not mean the darkeys who wear a white livery at Long Branch) had better have thought of this in time and not by incapacity and wrong-doing have rendered them selves so obnoxious to criticism. The Democratic Convention of Lan der county met at AuBtin on the and nominated Geo. W. Cassidy for Senator, Judge Hupp, J.

H. Burgess. A -Titus and Henley for Assembly J. F. Roberts for Clerk, and A.

Skillman for Sheriff. President Thiers is giving his atten tion to elaborate reports prepared from French representations with regard to the workings of constitutional govern ment. If President Grant had devoted some of his time to the same subject his administration might not have presented quite such a dismal record. We learn that the Manhatten mill at Austin has produced in the last nine months 979,065, te Let them stand upon their merits: but let there lie no bribtrv; no tampering with votes or returns. Let us consider the proposition coolly and temperately; let us vote uuuerstniidingly; and after an honest result is obtained, let the minority abide that result." If the Catnerons, the Couklings, and the other valets de place of the President were to do this, and he were to do likewise, we believe it would do more to re store the era of good feeling than all the suspensions of habeas corpus, Ku Klux cts and the other pet appliances of the odious carpet-baggers.

But this is where he trouble lies: Grant and his followers ilare not do it. They know, well know, that if a fair expression of the yopnlar will is ever obtained, out they go, carpet baggers and all. ith them it is a strug gle for life or death. They do not care for their party or their country; all their attention is devoted to their miserable selves, and so louj; as their personal ends are gratified all the rest can shift for itself. They are aware of all this, and therefore every officer of the Gov ernment, from tho President to a ueuro Postuiuster, is pressed into service.

Place preferments and the national purse are held out as baits to the wavering, Frauds of the most gigantic character are unhesitatingly resorted to, ami when these will not answer intimidation und actual force will take their place; the last most certainly will occur in all the South ern States. So our friend the Chronicle will find that the great obstacles in tho way of tho fair deal are the man and his supporters, whose re-election to the chief magistracy of the nation that paper so earnestly advocates Tho Toledo (Ohio) Blude boasts the possession of a "Jenkins" who has been interviewing the President at Lou Blanch, and who made the important discovery that Grant's bull pups are New fouudland dogs and the President has two colored servants who wear white livery; all of which interesting facts are set forth in detail for tho delectation of the good people of Ohio. No doubt when Grant assumes the state and style of autocrat this literary flunkey will be promoted to the position of Jeukins-in- Chief to tho Court. Ovvt neighbor, the Review, goes after Gen'l Banks with a stick reduced to point of wonderful uccuteness. If Banks had supported Grant it is probable the Review would not have contemplated Banks exactly in that light.

It is a good thing that he will probably never see the Review, otherwise he might feel bad, for that influential journal reproves him in terribly severe terms for preferrin "brains to shoulder straps," as Tom Fitch said. New Ads. David Wilkin is a candi date for County Commiasioner, and so licits the approval of both the county conventions. H. R.

said the aged Bacchanal, "they'll keep. on fooling with water till it depopulates ine eartn again. avcrtisfiufttts. Two Peensylvania women called for thoir husbands at a bar-room the other evening. One broke a pitcher over her husband Head, the other satisfied herself with doing the same for two decanters, but made up for it by throwing the cat and her kittens into a barrel of cider; these little bursts of playfulness over, they took their husbands to their quiet homes.
