Gazette Soturdoy, April 6, 19 Owen Reefer Owen N. Reefer, 92,1114 Old State Road, Kiski Township, died Friday, April 5,1996, at his home. The son of Wilson and Barbara George Reefer, he was born Oct. 6, 1903, in Cowanshannock Township, Armstrong County. Mr.

Reefer had lived in Kiski Township for most of his life. He attended the United Church of Christ, was a member of 437, Coudersport Consistory and the Spring Church Sportsmen's Club; and was a life member of the Kiski Township Fire Department. Prior to his retirement in 1964, he was employed for 40 years as a gang foreman for Peoples Natural Gas Apollo. are his wife, Olive M. Boyer Reefer, whom he married 73 years ago; three daughters: Martha L.

Doutt, Island of Kauai, Hawaii; Helen I. Colwell, Evanston, and Mary Evelyn Kinter, Apollo; 11 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; one brother and four sisters: Glen, Indiana; Clara Boyer, Rose Valley; Bertha Meyers, Gas- town; Ruth Henkins, North Carolina; and Gertrude Blair, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; two sons, Ivan Eugene Reefer and Raymond Blair Reefer; one brother, Richard Reefer; and one sister, Mary Pierce. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, April 7, at the Curran-Shaffer Funeral Home, Apollo, where a Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 8, at the funeral home with the Rev. Darrell Knopp officiating. Interment will be made in St. Paul's United Church of Christ Cemetery, Rural Valley.

Ruth Lynn Ruth Emma Lynn, 90, Altoona, formerly of New Florence RD 2, died Thursday, April 4, 1996, at Lake View Terrace Nursing Home, Altoona, Fla. The daughter of Ross W. and Anna C. Penrose Lichtenfels, she was born Sept. 23, 1905, in West Wheatfield Township, Indiana County.

Mrs. Lynn was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Robinson. She moved to Altoona, in 1982. Prior to her retirement, she had been employed for 45 years as a first grade teacher at Garfield and many schools. 1 Surviving are one brother, F.

Lee Lichtenfels, Luna. Ohio; one sister, Gail Fogle, Leesburg, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, K. Dean Lynn; two brothers, Ira and Dean; and one sister, Pearl. Friends will be received froM 24 and 7-9 p.m.

Car damaged Indiana Borough police said a vehicle owned by James and Vicky 'Valenti of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., was parked along the 00 block of North Taylor Avenue early today when someone, using an unknown object, shattered the driver's side window and a mirror. The vandalism was discovered at 2:45 a.m. DAYTON State police at Kittanning said someone used a .22 caliber weapon to shoot a pet cat owned by Debra Griffith at her New Bethlehem RD 1 property sometime between March 30 and April 5. Benedict, died Friday, April 5, 1996, at her home. The daughter of Bine and Catherine Ducket Daisley, she was born Sept. 5,1919, in Clearfield. Monday at St. Benedict Presbyterian Church with Pastor Martha Cartmell officiating. Interment will be made in Fairview Cemetery. Sylvia Lantz Sylvia M. Lantz, 73, Lantz Road, Bell Township (Avonmore RD 2), died Friday, April 5,1996, at Indiana Hospital where she was a patient since March 29.

The daughter of Simon and Emma Spencer Guiher, she was born May 18,1922, in Clearfield County. Mrs. Lantz had lived in Bell Township for the past 34 Surviving are her husband, Charles F. Lantz; four sons: Charles Beaver Falls; Simon Bell Township; Randy Garfield, N.J.; and Larry Saltsburg; three daughters: N. Jean Little, Brush Valley; Helen M.

Barkley, Indiana; and Carolyn K. Huffman, Saltsburg; 18 grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren; two brothers and three sisters: Thomas Guiher, Aultman, and Lloyd Guiher, Saltsburg; Clara Stump, Indiana; Eleanor Haney, Clarksburg; and Kathryn Ferguson, Clymer. Sunday. April 7, at the Curran Funeral Home Saltsburg, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 8. Interment will be made in Edgewood Cemetery. Nick Monoskey Nick Monoskey, 81, Clinton Street, Rossiter, died Friday, April 5, at his home.

Born Dec. 7, 1914, in Sydney, he was the son of John and Helen Evancho Monoskey. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local 1609. Surviving are his wife, Betty Miller Monoskey, whom he married June 26, 1942; one daughter, Barbara Mennetti, Rossiter; one son, Nick R. Monoskey, Oliveburg; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Anna Godo and Mary Grusky; six brothers, Thomas, Peter, Charles, Joseph, Michael and Steve Monoskey. Friends will be received in the Deeley Funeral Home in Punxsutawney from 7-9 p.m. Saturday and from 2r4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m.

Monday at the funeral home. The Rev. David Pearce will officiate and interment will be in the Union Cemetery at Rossiter. Dominic Truance Dominic Truance, 93, Rossiter, died Thursday, April 4, 1996, at the Blose-McGregor Health Care Center in Punxsutawney. Born in Walston on Sept.

5,1902, he was the son of Felix and Carmella Cataldo Truance. He was married on May 1,1926, to Ellen Johnson who died on Aug. 30, 1989. A retired coal miner, Mr. Truance was a veteran of World War I and was a member of the Rossiter American Legion; the Sons of Italy; F.O.

Eagles 1231 and the United Mine Workers of America. He was active as a baseball umpire and as a enthusiast in Rossiter. Surviving are one son, Richard Truance, Rossiter; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; one brother, Louis Truance, Punxsutawney; and one sister, Margaret Simpson, Rossiter. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a daughter, Virginia Luketich; a sister, Mary Etherson; four brothers, Francis, Anthony, Carmen and Carl Truance; and a daughter-in-law Clara Truance. Friends will be received at the Deeley Funeral Home in Punxsutawney from 7-9 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday. A prayer service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home and interment will be in the Union Cemetery in Rossiter. Idamae Krise Idamae Krise, 89, Mountain View Manor, Hillsdale, formerly of St. Augustine, died Monday, April 1, 1996, at the manor.

The daughter of James and Ida Krise Hollen, she was born April 14, 1906, in Hollentown. Mrs. Krise was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Altar Rosary Society. She was also a member and former secretary of the Chest Springs Senior Citizens.

Surviving are these children: Donald, Patton; Sister Colman, RSM, Barnesboro; Robert, married to the former Bertha Pendelton; Leonard, married to the former Shirley Smith; Jean, married to Joseph Wirfel; Thomas, married to the former Grace Nelen, all of St. Augustine; George, married to the former Jan Hanscom, Swazey Center, N.H.; Verda, married to Thomas Britton, Nicktown; James, Homewood, Mary Jane, married to Robert Lauer, Carlisle; Jerry, Fayetteville; Joan, married to Jack Rossman, Hollidaysburg RD; and Patrick, married to the former Jean Tutko, Greensburg; 39 grandchildren and 65 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, the former June Brodosky, St. Augustine; and sister-in-law, Cecelia Hollen, Ash- yille. She was the last member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray Krise, on Aug.

23, 1975; one son, Lewis; one grandson, Thomas Krise; infant great-granddaughter, Nicole Weakland; daughter-in-law, the former Genevieve Buck; brothers Harry, Elmer, Wilmer, Wilbur, Ernest and George; and sisters Grace Beers, Ruth Beers and Florence Miller. Onorena Bendis Onorena "Rena" Petricig Bendis, 81, Clarksburg, died Friday, April 5, 1996, at Indian Haven Nursing Home, Indiana. The daughter of John and Maria Martinig Petricig, she was born Dec.

27,1914. in Young Township. Ms. Bendis was a member of The Church of the Good Shepherd, Kent, and Teamsters Union Local 926. She was a resident of Clarksburg for 47 years- Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a laborer for Federal Laboratories in Tunnelton for many years.

Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Florence Bendis, Saltsburg: four grandchildren: Sherry Barbaro and husband, Ralph, Maryland; Roger Bendis and wife, Kimberly, Creekside; Richard Bendis, Clarksburg; and Heather Bendis, Saltsburg; several great-grandchildren; one sister, A. Velia Ruddock and husband, Alex, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Roger G. Bendis; one sister and one brother, Gilda Duca and Melio Petricig. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

Motorists slightly hurt in accident KITTANNING Two persons received minor injuries in a two-car accident at the intersection of Route 422 and State Route 3009 in Armstrong County at 7:30 p.m. Friday, according to state police at Kittanning.

Police identified the drivers as Roxanne Fink, 16. Kittanning RD 4. and Matthew Cook, 52, Caulfield, Ohio. Treated at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital for minor injuries were Fink and a passenger in the Cook car, Jane H. Cook, 72, Youngstown, Ohio, police HOMER CITY State police said a car driven by George Snowball, Homer City, and a truck operated by Harold Householder, Coral, collided on Route 596 in Center Township at 2:55 p.m.

Friday. Both drivers escaped injury, police said. Indiana Borough police said cars driven by Jeffrey C. Shank, Glen Campbell, and William Piper, Indiana RD 2, collided at 11:48 p.m. Friday in the 800 block of Philadelphia St.

No injuries were reported. BROOKVILLE State police at Punxsutawney said Robert Michael Shaw, 16, Brookville, escaped injury when his truck failed to negotiate a curve on State Route 2023 in Pinecreek Township and hit a tree at 11:55 p.m. Thursday. (IUP photo) IUP students planning food drive IUP News Service Indiana County's 2,500 low-income families will be given a helping hand by students from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Approximately 50 students from the Food and Nutrition Department's Community Nutrition class will hold their second annual food drive to benefit the Indiana County Community Action Program Saturday, April 20. "The food drive provides Community Nutrition students with an opportunity to perform an actual community nutrition intervention, instead of just talking about it," said Dr. Rita Johnson, class professor. "It also shows them how important and rewarding community service is." Non-perishable food and personal care items will be collected at the main entrances to the following stores: Giant Eagle, Wal-Mart, Kmart, Hills, Bi-Lo at Wayne Avenue, Riverside Supermarket in Homer City, and Tate's Supermarket in Clymer. Students will collect donations from 10 a.m.

to 4 p.m. Some students will collect items dqor-to-door within Indiana Borough and Indiana Township. Food items most needed include macaroni and cheese, cold cereals, peanut butter, jelly, canned items and spaghetti sauce. Suggested personal care items include paper products, diapers, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene products. Monetary donations are also appreciated.

Nettie Nester, who works with the ICCAP food bank, said last year's food drive was a "tremendous success," generating a total of 2,387 pounds of food and personal care items as well as $48.80 in cash. Nester also said that numerous whiter emergencies have severely depleted the food bank's stock of supplies and that "the annual Community Nutrition class food drive gives us something to rely on as spring approaches." "We hope to exceed last year's donations to better serve the county's growing population of under served families," said Wayne Strauss, a senior food and nutrition major from Darlington. Cordoba, a cardiologist on the medical staff at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital, will speak on "Women and Heart Disease" at the next meeting of the hospital's Heart Club. Kiski Valley troopers check accidents APOLLO State police assigned to the Kiski Valley Station near Apollo investigated 45 traffic accidents during March, including four hit-and-runs.

Twenty-nine people were injured in the accidents. Troopers arrested nine motorists for driving under the influence and 15 drivers for traffic law violations. Police also handed out 41 written warnings for lesser traffic law violations or for operating faulty equipment. Police assisted eight drivers. Troopers also conducted 69 investigations that led to 39 arrests.

Seminar focuses on housing issues The public is invited to attend a free seminar on fair housing and tenant-landlord issues from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, in the Chew Chase Community Center, Indiana. Speakers will include Martha Troxell, attorney; David Flowers, Laurel Legal Services attorney; and Fran Slansky, Indiana County Fair Housing officer. Clymer apartment damaged CLYMER Fire that is believed to have started in a television-entertainment cabinet extensively damaged one unit and forced evacuation of two others in an apartment complex near Clymer late Friday night. Clymer Fire Chief George Misur- da said John Sexton, 601 Hillside Drive, and his father were returning to the younger Sexton's apartment at about 10:35 p.m. when they heard a beeping sound inside the living room. John Sexton, told firemen he opened the door and discovered the fire.

He said he attempted to douse the blaze with an extinguisher while his father went to a telephone to turn in the alarm. The younger Sexton, Misurda said, appeared to be overcome by- smoke and was given oxygen by paramedics. He was not hospitalized. Misurda said he believes the fire was triggered by an electrical malfunction in the entertainment cabinet. The damage was confined to the Sexton unit.

Two other units were evacuated while firemen ventilated them of smoke. Misurda said Sexton lost most of his contents and is temporarily residing with his father at Clymer RD 2. The apartment complex is owned by Gelichman and Company, Portland, Maine, and is located just outside of Clvmer Borough on Route 403. Firemen from Clymer and Cher- ryhill Township responded to the alarm. At 6:49 p.m.

Friday, Clvmer firemen were dispatched to a flue fire at the home of David McNeal on Helman Road, Indiana RD 3. Damage was confined to the flue, which had overheated, Misurda said. Firemen from Cherry Tree were were also called at 6:49 p.m. to extinguish a brush and grass fire along Ridge Road in Montgomery Township. Friends of Park programs Friends of the Parks programs at Yellow Creek State Park will go to the birds during the next two weekends.

On Saturday, April 13, Margaret and Roger Higbee of the Todd Bird Club will host a morning "Bird Migration Walk." Thousands of waterfowl and a variety of birds of prey, including ospreys and even an occasional bald eagle, stop for rest at Yellow Creek Lake each year during their spring migrations. The walk will leave from the park office at 8 a.m. Participants should bring binoculars, if possible. And on Saturday, April 20, Dan and Georgette Syster will lead a perennial Friends of the Parks favorite "Owl Prowl" an after- dark drive around the park to listen to and communicate with nocturnal raptors. Owl Prowl begins at 8 p.m.

at the park's Nature Center. Registration for both free programs is required by calling the park at 357-7913..
