From Advnnco Route 51 Is under contract, with the exception of a two mile gup, to Futton on Route 9. All of these contracts will be completed In 1924.

The wtst.rn north and south road through Southeust Missouri is designated as Koute 23, which begins at the Arkansas line near the southwest corner of Sutler county and extends north through Neelyville, Poplar Bluff, and Greenville to Frederick-town, where it joins Route 9, which extends into St. Louis. The routes and location of these roads, while formally designated by the State legislature in the Centennial Road Law, passed in 1921, were largely located, and to a considerable extent placed under construction, by county funds and Federal aid obtained through the State Highway Commission before the Centennial Road Law went into effect. Taking into consideration the large amount of local money expended in the construction of Southeast Missouri roads, and the immense importance of completing at an early date the sections of State roads, which will not' be completed under the preent the carrying of the proposal for increasing revenue for state highway purposes is probably of more importance to the counties of "Southeast Missouri than any other section of the SJate. Poplar Bluff Republican. FARM ALWAYS HAS PROBLEMS SALE Business of Agriculture Must Contin ers 'Southeast Missouri like a net, reaching practically every town and city in this part of the State.

When completed this system of roads will enable the traveling public to reach by auto any town in Southeast Missouri over good roads any day in the year. The Southeast Missouri system of roads can perhaps be best described by saying it is composed of three main north and south roads and three main east and west roads, each with few branches or secondary roads. The eastern of the north and south roads is Route 9,. which enters the state at the Arkansas lina near the west side of Pemiscot county, thence north to Hayti and Caruthersville, an-' north to Portageville, New Madrid, Sikeston, Benton and Cape Girardeau to Jackson. At Jackson thi3 road branches.

Route 9, as designated by the State Highway Commission, extends from Jackson northwest to Fredericktown, and from there directly north through Farm-ington to St. Louis. The branch of Route 9 at Jackson is designated as Route 25, which extends directly north from Jackson to Appleton, Perry-ville, Ste. Genevieve, and joins Route 9 a short distance below St. Louis.

A large portion of this north and south road has already been constructed with gravel, and a small portion of concrete. From the State line north to two miles south of Hayti, the road has been constructed as a graded earth road, all bridges and culverts being completed. Through Hayti for a distance of four miles is a section of gravel, completed) some two years ago, while thru the north part of the county is eight niiles of 18-foot concrete construction, which is within 60 days of com ually Aieet new lonaiuons The time will never come, says practically completed as a gravel and concrete road across Butler county. The only uncompleted section now under contract on this route is an eight mile section south of Poplar Bluff, which will be complete in less than three weeks. The southern, east and west State road in Southeast Missouri is Route 84 from Caruthersville through Hayti, west to Kennett and the Arkansas line.

This line is one of the shortest routes in the State, but is one of the most important, as when completed it will furnish a good road every day in the year across the Little swamp, which has never been crossed by an all-year automobile road. This route will furnish Pemiscot county a direct route to St. Louis, through Kennett, thence north over Routes 25 and 53 to Poplar Bluff, and from Poplar Bluff north over Routes 23 and 9 to St. Louis. The central east and west road in Southeast Missouri, and one -of the most important highways in Southeast Missouri, is Route 16 from Bird's Point west through Charleston, Sikeston, Dexter to Poplar Bluff, thence northwest to Van Buren to Springfield, and from 'Springfield over routes 14 and 1 through Carthage and Joplin to the State line.

Route 16 will be the first cross State road maintained practically the entire year in good condition for automobile traffic. It is at present complete with concrete and gravel, or under contract for concrete and gravel surfacing, the entire distance from Bird's Point west to Poplar Bluff to the Butler-Carter county line. Route 15 also connects to an east and west road through the south tier counties of the State to Route 23 at Poplar Bluff. Route 42 extends through and Oregon counties and connects Routes 7 and 16 in Howell Brings Greater Bargains for You If you haven't already attended our ANNUAL CLEARANCE SALE come now and take advantage of the countless Bargains we have to offer. Sneakine of this fact. Dean Mum- ford, in his annual report of the Experiment Station just issued, says: "The demand upon tne resources oi the instiution for exact information SPECIAL Women's Crepe Dresses on many complicated problems of Women's Summer Dresses agriculture has greatly increased.

Conditions which have caused wide spread agriculture distress have imposed upon the farmer the immediate need of developing more economic methods of production, of replanning his system of farming, and of proceeding with confidence and assurance with those plans through the heln of the exact knowledge accumulated by long years of research in the Agricultural Experiment Station. It it also true that as the agriculture of a region becomes older the county. The northeast and west road of Southeast Missouri is Route 34, should properly be considered as beginning in Cape Girardeau, extend ing from Cape Girardeau over Route 9 to Jackson, and from Jackson west difficulties increase. All injurious plant and animal diseases increase over Koute 6i through Lutesville, Marble Hill, Lesper and Piedmont in in extent and virulence. The stodl becomes more and more depleted and the problem of soil conservation be Wayne county to Garwood in Reynolds county, Garwood being located on Route 21, which connects with Route 16 at Van Buren.

This east and west road connects Cape Girardeau with the main cross State road in the south part of the State, Route 16, which extends from Van Buren west to Springfield. Route 16 at Van Buren is also connected with Route 42 in Ripley county by Route 21, which extends from Route 18 near Van Buren south to Doniphan. in addition to the east and and north and south roads described above, a very important part of 'Women's Dresses of linen, pongee, voile and ratine in striking and' conservative patterns. Frorr Portageville at the north line 'of Pemiscot county through New Madrid, Benton, Cape Girardeau, to Jackson is an excellent stretch of gravel road, which is maintained at all times by the State maintenance forces. From near Jackson, 39 miles northwest to Fredericktown, Route 9 is under contract for grading, construction and culverts.

These contracts are practically completed, and will be entirely completed in June. At present no contracts have been let) for placing a surface on this section. From Jackson north to the north line of Cape Girardeau county, Route 25 has been graded, and all bridges and culverts constructed. It is the intention of the Chief Engineer to let contracts for surfacing this section as soon as funds are available, which will probably be in 1925 or 1926. The central north and south State road through Southeast Missouri is known as Route 25.

This road starts from the Arkansas line at Hopkin's Ferry near the southwest eorner of Dunklin ccuitty, thence east some six miles to Arbyrd, where it connects with a State refund road, which starts from a hard surface Arkansas state road at the North Arkansas line directly north of Leachville in Arkansas, and runs north td Arbyrd. From Arbyrd, Route 25 goes north to Senath, and Kennett -to Holcomb, where it branches, the west branch being known as route 53, which goes northwest into Butler county. Route 25 jroes almost directly north to Holcomb, Maiden, Bernie, Dexter and Bloomfield to Advance, where it branches again. The west branch, designated as Route- 51, goes south from Advance in Bollinger through Marble Hill and Lutesville the Southeast Missouri system is comes more expensive and requires greater skill. The soil may become infected with substances poisonous to particular plants.

It may also become infected with the germs of dangerous diseases. As the systems of livestock farming become more intensive, and a larger nulhber of animals are kept in a confined space, the more difficult it becomes to guard against dangerous and devastating animal diseases. The need of continuous scientific research in order to determine the best means and the most successful methods of eliminating these handicaps to a prosperous agriculture increases, therefore, as the agriculture of a country becomes older. The time will never come when a successful agriculture can be long maintained without continuous and extensive scientific research. Far from being discouraged by these facts, however the director of the Experiment Station reports notable progress in mor than one, hundred lines of investigation during the year.

His report is entitled. "Contributions to Knowledge in Agriculture" and is issued for free distribution as Station Bulletin 210. -It may be obtained by writing to the Women's Tailored Spring Suits itoute oo, wnicn extends from southeast to Charleston, and from Charleston south to Wolf Island, and to the New Madrid county line west of East Prairie. The State Highway Commission has had extensive and very carefully estimates made of the cost of the entire State lvad system, and finds the GO million dollar bond issue will complete only a portion of that system, so that the allotment of bond issue money to the various counties from the secondary road fund will not entirely complete the State roads.
