"We didn't see this as a moral victory. I think this is more of a loss from Woody's point of view, however. Our kids feel we should be 4-0 now," said Meyer. "We could have given it up when we were two touchdowns down because this is a very young football team.

But they came back," said Meyer, whose Mustangs scored twice in the fourth quarter to salvage the tie. Mike Ford got even for seven interceptions he threw in a 35-7 loss to Ohio State last year. He scored three touchdowns and passed for a fourth. And it was his run for two extra points that lifted the Mustangs even at 35-35 with less than four minutes left. Ford said that run "was a run-pass option.

Nobody took me." Ford riddled Ohio State's secondary for 36 completions in 57 attempts for 341 yards, prompting Hayes to say, "We're having difficulty with the good passers and we've seen three of them (Chuck Fusina of Penn State, Steve Smith of Baylor and Ford). This is not typical Ohio State defense." The tie was costly to Ohio State. Freshman quarterback Art Schlich-ter will be out four to 10 days with a severe right shoulder bruise. He could be sidelined against Purdue next week. Defensive tackle Byron Cato will be out 10 to 21 days with a deep thigh bruise while center Tim Vogler has a broken thumb and may be questionable for the game with the Boilermakers.

(AP) Coach Vince Dooley of Georgia said Saturday that Mississippi simply caught his Bulldogs at an inopportune time. "They caught us, I'm afraid, coming off our bad loss and they just haven't been able to get untracked yet," Dooley said after Georgia (3-1) demolished the Rebels (2-2) 42-3 in a Southeastern Conference opener. However, Ole Miss may have discovered a quarterback in the defeat. Freshman John Fourcade came off the bench in the final quarter for his first appearance this season and was impressive with his ability to elude defenders.

He also had several passes dropped by Ole Miss receivers and thus completed only one of five for 23 yards. "We got a long ways behind so I decided to put him in there," said Ole Miss Coach Steve Sloan. "I'll admit it wasn't the easiest of times to put him in the game." Dooley was pleased with Georgia's performance saying, "Obviously we played a total game. We had to play well offensively to score 42 points and of course, we had to play great defense to only give up only three points." "Now I kind of know how Custer must have felt," said Sloan. Jeff Pyburn accounted for three touchdowns and Willie McClendon raced for 145 yards.

Georgia, trailing 3-0, erupted for three second-quarter touchdowns within nine minutes after Steve Dennis intercepted a Rebel pass to start the first touchdown drive. Pyburn scored on runs of 1 and 9 yards and connected with Carmon Prince on a 3-yard pass for another score. McClendon also scored on a 1-yard plunge and the other Bulldog touchdowns came from freshman Matt Simon on a 2-yard run in the second quarter and a 27-yard sprint with only 2:35 left in the game. Ole Miss started the scoring in the SEC opener for both teams by driving 42 yards to the Georgia 8 in the first quarter, where they settled for Hoppy Vols Topple KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (UPI) Tennessee (1-2-1) exploded for three third quarter touchdowns, including two by junior quarterback Jimmy Streater, to beat Army (1-2-1) 31-13 Saturday.

With 9:39 to go in the third quarter and Tennessee leading 10-7, Streater swept around right end for a 47-yard touchdown. He scooted three yards for his second score 74 minutes later. The scoring spree ended a three-game drought in which the Vols had scored only 23 points in the previous two games. Streater's first touchdown capped an 80-yard drive that covered five plays, including a 12-yard pass to wide receiver Jeff Moore. Tennessee went ahead 17-7 on that jaunt, then put it out of reach when Streater scored again with 2:05 to go in the period.

That Tennessee drive began on the Army 45 and went to the Cadets' 17 in 10 plays. Alan Duncan hit a field goal that was nullified when Tennessee decided to take a penalty against Army for too many men on the field and went for the touchdown. The Vols' third touchdown of the period came when monster Greg Gaines intercepted a pass from quarterback Earl Mulrane and raced 31 yards for the score and a 31-7 lead. Tennessee's Gary Moore ran back the opening kickoff 53 yards before stepping out of bounds at the Army 39. Woodv Hayes said of his Ohio State (2-1-1) team's 35-35 college football deadlock with Southern Methodist (2-1-1) Saturday.

"We had a 14-point lead and got a little frivolous. We put some other people in and they had enough offense to get back into the game. We let them out of the box," said the Buckeyes' coach. Southern Methodist reeled off 107 offensive plays an incredible 38 more than Ohio State and piled up 31 first downs and 501 yards, scoring the most points on the Buckeyes in a regular season game since Purdue won 41-6 in 1967. (AP) Maybe now people will take Bo Schembechler seriously. They didn't two weeks ago when the Michigan football coach said he was concerned about Duke. Since the Wolverines clobbered Duke, 52-0, people laughed all the more when Schembechler said he was concerned about Arizona. But the Wildcats (3-2) of Coach Tony Mason, a one-time Michigan assistant under Bump Elliott, nearly upset the third-ranked Wolverines (4-ojbefore a non-conference record Michigan Stadium crowd of 104,913 Saturday. ln Arizona poured over 17 points in a span of about 7 minutes in the first half for a 17-7 lead, but finally succumbed, 21-17 with Michigan's final touchdown coming on a 1-yard plunge by fullback Russell Davis on fourth down with minutes remaining.

"Arizona did a great job against us," Schembechler said. "I said they were a good team and they were." "We made colossal mistakes and we were lucky to win, but maybe this will help us in the long run," said Schembechler. "You can't drop punts. You can't drop passes in the open. And you can't have passes intercepted in the endzone.

And besides, our defense didn't play all that well." A fumbled punt led to Arizona's first touchdown and another lost fumble led to the Wildcats' other TD. They also intercepted a Rick Leach pass in the endzone in the fourth quarter when Michigan was on the 2 and trailing 17-14. "The best team won," Mason said. There will be some Pac 10 bruises on them and some Big Ten bruises on us." "I think Michigan has a lot of class," Mason said. 'They don't play dirty.

They're not a hot dog crew. We didn't have any extra rah rah for this game (but) I wanted to win. You have to overcome mistakes with attitude." The other Notre Dame scores came on a plunge by quarterback Joe Montana and a stunning 45-yard dash by safety Jim Browner after ripping the ball away from a Spartan receiver. But although outmuscled on the ground, the MSU passing game kept the Spartans in the contest. Quarterback Ed Smith hit on 27 of 41 passes for over 300 yards, and fired two late touchdown strikes to narrow the margin. Each team scored the first time it had the ball and fought on even terms in the first stanza. But Notre Dame opened a 22-6 halftime lead by slowly gaining control of the line of scrimmage and killing any MSU drives.

Michigan State went 72 yards in 17 plays on the opening series to set up a 25-yard field goal by Morten Andersen. But the Irish fought back to take the lead they held the rest of the day.
