The Community Today, Pan American Missions stretch all over the basically roadless Colombia, necessitating the use of planes for the missionaries. Holt proudly points out that more than a thousand Indians on the Amazon River have been converted to Christianity through the missions.

But Holt's mission work doesn't stop with Zephyrhills and Colombia. Pan American Missions also has non-. denominational churches known as "house groups" all over the United States. A house group consists of a small group of people who meet in 1 homes, to worship. House groups have no membership lists, but encourage people to come to the once or twice a week meetings whenever they wish.

Holt feels it is because of these somewhat unique principles that the house groups have had a great deal of success. "This thing is spreading very rapidly," he said. "It appeals to people who are a little bit afraid. They're not sold on church, but they feel comfortable in a home situation." Because of his missionary duties, Holt is only able to put in 100 days a year at Corvilla. The rest of the time is spent establishing house groups and making a once a year visit to Colombia.

When he is out of town, the ministerial duties fall on residents Ron and Jackie McCune. A late addition to the clergy, Holt originally started out to be a doctor. Those plans changed and he graduated from college with a degree in chemistry and went into research in that field. Several jobs in accounting and sales followed, until at the age of 27, Holt found himself a nightclub entertainer with the sole ambition of some day being a nightclub owner. "Then I felt the call of God to be a minister," he said.

"I quit my job and went to a seminary." After graduating, Holt became a pastor in an Assembly of God church, but left the church to be independent in 1949. "I found no great objection to the church but I found more light," he said. "I don't want to be limited in what God wants to give me." Holt is satisfied with his life and churches, but has no. big plans for expansion of the peaceful settlement known as Corvilla. Premise Guides "People live their lives in the home, not the church.

That's where the emphasis is. The real teaching is in the home, while Holiday Inns and schools are used for big meetings and for worship. We don't invest a lot of money in building." Erskine Holt was a Christian told me about this place and the minute I it, I knew. The Lord responded and the people responded and I was able to get it." Holt divided the land into lots and charged buyers the same thing he had paid. Although he said he made no particular effort to sell the lots, Holt had buyers' from all over the country.

Holt and his family started life at Corvilla in a trailer and are just now nearing of a regular home. A larger all-purpose building is slated for the future, while dormitories and guest trailers that house visitors during the camp meetings are already on the grounds. The settlement of Corvilla is th smaller of two corporations of which Holt is president. The other, Pan American Missions, has a home office in Portland, that is mainly as a clearing house for funds for work in the extensive missions in Colombia. Those missions include more than 100 churches, two airplanes and a radio station, all of which have been developed since Holt established the first mission back in 1959.

"It all started when I took a mission journey to Ghana and Nigeria and saw the mission set-ups and I felt there was a better way," Holt said. "I chose Colombia after I asked the Lord for direction. He told me not to shoot in all directions but to concentrate on one country and use it as a stepping stone." A Religious By KATHY HOYT Tribune Staff Writer ZEPHYRHILLS A small, wooden sign pointing the way off state Road 39 is the only clue to the traveler that he will find something called "Corvilla" if he ventures down the palmetto lined street. There-'s nothing there to indicate that Corvilla, a peaceful community of about 40 persons, is the realization of a dream of its founder: ordained minister, missionary and businessman Erskine Another sign down the dirt road says Corvilla is also a camp meeting ground. Holt will tell him that this transformation takes place about six times a year.

But the one thing neither Holt nor a sign can tell the visi- tor is the absolute feeling of tranquility that encompasses one at villa. That must be experienced personally. "Our mission is to have a place for people where they're not under stress," Holt said. "It's peaceful here and although our primary purpose is a camp meeting grounds we have the added refuge of being a place for people who want to come and stay." Corvilla was founded on a religious premise, but Holt makes it clear that no restrictions are put on the creeds of the people who live there. And although services are held on the premises, attendance is not mandatory.

"We don't demand that of people, they're free to come if they wish," Holt said. "We're non-denominational, we have Seventh Day Advent-ists here as well as Catholics." Today, Corvilla is comprised of modest homes, trailers and an all-purpose community building. Eight years ago when Holt first saw it, it was -pure palmettos. At that time Holt was the founder and pastor of the Christian Temple, a non-denominational church in, Tampa. "One day I was just going north through Zephyrhills and I felt that if I ever moved out of Tampa, I would like to live here," Holt said.

the Christian Temple closed, Holt started looking for property in east Pasco. "I didn't have any money, only a vision," Holt said.
