According to the mayor, the town council will consider, at its next meeting, a proposed ordinance that will authorize increasing the reward for the capture of vandals to $500. The property was purchased from the Trust for Public Lands, a California based conservation group, at the end of February.

A loosely organized group of citizens raised the $20,000 needed in less than three weeks. The value of the land has been estimated at more than During the last town council meeting, an advisory committee to administer the newly purchased land, was formed. Steve McCrimmon was named chairman; Edith McCrimon, secretary-treasurer, and members Dr. Roy Weller, Herb Craig, Frank LeRoy, Councilman Bob Rou-sch representing Yankeetown, and Albert Jensen, representing Inglis. Mayors Sabel and Ed Wisdom were named honorary co-chairmen.

Preservation of the natural state of the lower Withlacoochee is the primary goal. By JACK NAST Tribune Staff Writer 1 YANKEETOWN Notice! The town of Yan-keetown is offering a $100 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the vandals who cut down and removed 10 cedar trees from the newly purchased virgin land on thje Withlacoochee River. Mayor Joe Sabel and other members of the committee which recently raised more than $20,000 to purchase 269 acres of pristine land to preserve in a natural state for future generations, were up in arms this week over the distraction of cedar trees on the property.

Sabel said the removal of trees was discovered over the weekend and the work was obvi-oisly done by persons interested in using the wood for lumber. Judging from the circumfer-aice ofthe stumps left, the trees taken were between 25 and 30 feet in height. Tops and branches of the trees were left scattered about the densly forested area. A complaint was filed with the Levy County Sheriffs Department and an investigation is under way. Virgil Singletary, St. Petersburg, placed second with a 5 pound catch; Orem took third with a total weight of 4 pounds, 4ounces; and Cathy Andrews captured fourth with 4 pounds even. Tournament director Bob Chapman of the Cotee River Bassmasters, told participants he was proud of their efforts in behalf of charity and felt the tournament was successful enough to give it another try next year, perhaps at a later date in the spring. Bob and Barbara Rothwell agreed and said there were a few things they would do differently in promoting next years event.

"I guess most bass fishermen won't show up unless there is a cash prize. So I guess we'll have to figure out a way to do that and still have money left over for the charity," commented a disappointed Barbara who had expected a much greater turnout. "This will probably become an annual thing and I guess we'll learn by our mistakes," Bob said. By JACK NAST Tribune Staff Writer LAKE ROUSSEAU Twenty four area bass anglers showed what good sportsmanship is all about when they plunked down $20 apiece to enter the Lake Rousseau charity tournament over the weekend. Although the amount of fish caught and the amount of money raised was moderate, the tournament was considered a great success in terms of accomplishment.

Proceeds from the tournament sponsored by the Suncoast Jaycees, Camp N' Fish, Cotee River Bass Masters and the Lunker Lovers Bass Club, were donated to the Florida Sheriffs Boys Villa and Citrus County's Key 'Training Center for the Mentally Retarded. Barbara Rothwell, owner of Camp N' Fish, said $332 was raised for the Sheriffs youth fund and $36.34 was donated to the Key Training Center. Checks were given to representatives of the organizations after the the fish fry and dance which concluded the days activities. Ten trophies were awarded winners by total weight with a large trophy for the big bass. In all; 21 fish were caught weighing 42 pounds, 8 ounces.
